General Comments:

I am hoping that CMU will be a match for me (after I raise my SAT score, of course). Any thoughts?

Chance me if possible for the college of science (chemistry or physics)

From Raleigh, NC (Wake County)
SAT: 2000 (CR:640, M:710, W:650)
ACT: 28 (M:33,E:25,R:28,S:27) I know its bad but I didn’t even know the format beforehand
AP: Chemistry(4), Environmental Science(5), AP Calculus AB/BC (will take), AP Statistics will take, Biology (will not take)
GPA: weighted on a 5 point scale (4.54)
unweighted: 3.83
Extracurriculars: 11 out of 12 time varsity letterman (lettered 11 out of 12 possible seasons)
-3 time all state runner
-3 time all conference runner
-2 time cross country MVP on a top 3 team
-One time track MVP
-5 time all region runner
-JV basketball 1 year
-Science Olympiad 2 years
-Chemistry tutoring 2 years
-fyi: the running takes up 4 hours a day, not to mention the time I am exhausted, preventing me from having the best grades or having a job.
-will show strong intellectual curiosity in essays
Is it possible, and if so how likely, is it for me to get in

I would venture to say that it is a low-mid reach for you. See if you can bring up your SAT/ACT score. Are you taking a December test? And be sure to show interest in CMU in your essay, not just an interest in learning.

@Dividebyzero: You’re chances are less than average for both colleges but not terrible. Decent all-around student and your GPA isn’t as bad as you think it is, but that SAT isn’t very competitive. Your leadership is good but your accomplishments aren’t exceptional.

My GPA is pretty much the mean and my SAT scores (as of now) are in the middle 50%…how does that make my chance less than average? I am also retaking SAT in Dec. and will (believe me, I will) get over 2200. Sorry I’m not trying to start an argument or prove that I am actually worthy of admission (I believe CMU may be a low reach for me anyways). I just want to understand your logic. Sorry if I came off as pompous or mean…

Addressing only CIT, I agree with AvgAsian:

That will 100% make your chances less than average, you are an unhooked, white, male applicant. The 50% range and below is generally for applicants who are either hooked, a legacy or an athletic recruit. For good chances, try to aim for the 75th percentile and above.

Students applying to a strong engineering school generally tend to have strong math 2 scores (750+). However, a 700 will not hurt you, but it is not considered “impressive” in any way, at least for a strong engineering school. 3.7 UW GPA is not spectacular, it is average, as you have stated. Class rank, on the other hand, is weak, and will hurt you (using UW ranking). It doesn’t matter what your weighted GPA is, because even if what you say is true, CMU has no way of confirming whether or not you are actually top 10% or not using weighted GPA. Your ECs, to me, are mixed and no strong passion is evident (med–>track–>business–>research–>robotics). What exactly do you want to do? The research will definitely help, though. It seems you do a lot of great stuff, but none of them are really in depth, they are mostly superficial, which is not a good thing for admissions.

I’d say if you do get that 2200 you have an average chance, but even if you don’t, you should still definitely apply

I’m might apply to Tepper ED II if I get denied by Stern ED (likely lol).

These are my stats. What do you think?

2130 SAT (730 M/750 CR/650 writ)
790 US hist, 660 Math 1 (bad I know), 650 Bio-E
Top 10% of class, 3.9 weighted GPA
8 AP’s (two 4’s, two 5’s so far - English/bio 4’s, Comp Sci/US hist 5’s) The four aps this year are psych, stats, euro, eng. comp and honors physics (note school does not offer AP micro/macro) I got a C+ in precalc honors which might hurt (but I blame the teacher lol)
Decent EC’s (not listed), 1 team captain, 150 hours vol, at least average essay imo, two good rec (Wharton grad, UVA grad) + guidance counselor rec

Also, does anyone think I should retake my SAT’s? I’ve only taken them twice, both without really studying (also didn’t study for subject tests). I really think I may be able to get a better score on math, maybe CR and probably writing on a good day, but I don’t know whether it’s worth it.

SAT Math 800 CR 720 Writing 790 (2310)
SAT Subject Tests Math II 730 US History 680 Chemistry 610 (only prep was a semester-long course a year before I took the test)

4.8 weighted GPA , 3.9 unweighted. 9/411.

Last year I took AP EngLang (5) APUSH (5) AP GovPol (4) and AP EnvSci (4)
This year I’m taking AP Physics B, AP Calc AB/BC, AP EngLit, and AP Psychology.

academic honors - AP scholar with honor, high school “honor scholar”, honor roll since forever.

My high school isn’t very technology-oriented and doesn’t offer any programming classes (let alone AP CompSci) and freshman year I got sucked into the band world. My extracurriculars are boy scout stuff (almost Eagle), latin club, guitar club, school literary magazine club, and my high school’s awesome band programs (marching band section leader and band captain, jazz band, winter drumline). I’ve won a few contests playing my instrument (alto sax), so I guess you could say I’m a band kid.

I’m applying for CMU’s Music and Technology program, so I have to get into the School of Music (alto sax audition) and either the SCS or CIT (ece option). I don’t know how competitive this program is, but I heard that the first year it was offered, they only accepted 4 undergrads.

The thing is, I don’t have any math/science extracurriculars except for a recent math competition - my last “technology” class was in 7th grade (and I immensely enjoyed it). No science olympiad or math camp stuff.

Right now I’m a little bit doubtful of the CIT/SCS side of my application since I’m seeing some pretty impressive numbers in other threads in the CMU forum. Please - give it to me straight.

Hey guys! I’m applying to H&SS. Let me know what you guys think!

SAT I (breakdown): CR(710) Writing(800) Math(730) 2240 overall.

SAT II: waiting for scores… expecting a ~750 Math II and ~700 Lit

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/80

AP (place score in parenthesis): Eng Lang (4)

IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a

Senior Year Course Load: 3 APs, which is as many as my school offers

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): PSAT Commended , tons of school awards

Subjective:

Extracurriculars: Varsity Tennis (4 yrs), Varsity XC (4 yrs), NHS (President), Newspaper (Editor), Academic Team

Counselor Rec: Assuming great

Additional Rec: n/a

Interview: Nope

Chance me? I feel like I have a good chance… CMU is my #1 choice right now, but I didn’t do ED, in part because I don’t know if my family would be able to pay for it. Thanks!

Any opinions guys? This thread seems kind of pointless if people post and no one responds (hence the benefit/return of annoying individual threads).

@sasasa: decent SAT, low GPA. Team captain is good but the rest is kinda meh. TSB is a reach for you and definitely not a place to go anyway if math isn’t your strong suit.

@Owlehn: You’re overqualified for HSS. By the numbers you’re in but of course you need to pair it up with good essays to seal the deal.

If you can get a better score on either do it. If you can’t score better on Math II, no use in wasting the time and money. This is a tech school and math is essential.
