"THE" CMU 2015 CHANCE Thread-- Please STOP creating New chance Threads

Oh, whoops. You said you were planning to apply, so I assumed you meant under regular decision.

If you’ve already submitted then you can probably email admissions and ask to submit your portfolio to your file. A student will be answering the undergrad admissions email, so he/she probably won’t have a clue and will redirect your email to someone who does. So expect a delay of a few days. They should happily include your portfolio in your consideration, though.

I know everyone is probably sick of this, but I’d love to go to Carnegie Mellon! I’m planning to apply to SCS and CIT through RD though I doubt I’ll get in.

Thanks again for looking over this - I know its a stretch but opinions are always helpful :).

Is it more competitive if you apply ECE than Chemical Engineering? And is there a cap on the amount of ECE or ChemE students per year?

Noobie

Bring up your test scores. GPA is great, ECs are excellent. Don’t worr too much, you are only a junior.

Look at your school Naviance system, maybe it will give you more pictures of where you are. And, from now to end of March, there will be a lots of posts here about accept, defer and deny. It will also help.

thank you! Yeah the test scores are killing me. Gotta study a lot this Christmas break =/ I’m going to maintain my 4.4 hopefully this year.
And my sister goes to CMU. She says going to the pre-college program really helps your chances. I hope shes right!

Noobie - It’s holiday, don’t work too hard. You still have time. Pre-college program costs around US$8,000, kind of expensive. The course load is pretty heavy. If you do the most challenge courses like ECE or computer science, it’s hard to get good grade. But it really helps a lot for admission (if you get A or B). It’s up to you. Actually, if you bring up your test scores, I think you are very qualify for CMU.

I’m a senior applying to the CSC. Also, should I apply to MCS, to increase my chances of being accepted?

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2320 (800CR , 800M, 720WR)

Intended Major: CS
State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: <100000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not sure if this counts, but I self studied for AP Stat and Physics B, and I have a fair amount of CS experience on my own, and I did a summer research program at my school.

flying- haha yeah it is a holiday. I won’t overwork, but I def. will get some sort of work in! Hopefully >.>
The program is quite expensive, that is true. I’m not taking the extremely rigorous courses there. I think I looked at the list… AP stat and history? My sis. recommended taking history b/c the credits transfer =D
My friend who is a senior this year also went to precollege… and he got a C and a B … and still got into MCS! Comparing myself to him, I think I am a good candidate for CMU. But admin. officers may see some things I don’t see =O

Thanks for your input!

Stats:SAT: Math : 700 Writing:800 Reading: 750
SAT II: Math Level II : 790 Physics: 800
ACT: not taken
GPA: 4.00 UW
Rank: 5/111 ish (the top 20% of my school gets into ivies each year)
Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB):[IBH Math 7; IBH Physics 7+;IBH Chemistry 7+; IBS Economics 7; IBS English (A1) 7-; IBS French B 6- (these are my junior/senior year semester grades, not actual IB marks); In addition I have huge upward trend of grades between 9th and 10th grades. My average was a 5/7 (C) and it became an average of 7+/7 (higher than A+) pretty much overnight.
Subjective:
Essays: First one is about how my close relationship with my blind and severely epileptic mother has influenced my outlook on life. I talk about how family circumstances mean I basically never see my dad and have to singlehandedly take care of my mother and how this affected my values and aspirations.
Why CMU Essay: I got really in depth as to course selections etc. and why the things that make CMU unique mean that I ‘fit in’.

Recs: First is from Chem teacher who believes I am an otherworldly genius (which as you can tell I am not…)

The second is from my econ teacher who also likes to exaggerate and use SAT words… probably raving but seeing where I am applying it is basically a requirement.

Supplementary Material: Research abstract for research in Physical Chemistry with an interesting result.
Summer Activities:

  • Programming in Wolfram Mathematica, JAVA, C++ and Python for 3 years. I have been able to make several models for my IBH science courses.
  • Making and Programming LEGO Mindstorms robots since I was 10 yrs old. Made a book scanner.
  • Unpaid Internship at American Cancer Society NY Branch – Was able to get a rec letter from the head of the program praising my work in setting up the ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ event. 110 hours for both Junior and Senior Years.
-Attended a Columbia U. Materials Science and Nanotechnology program. – I impressed the program head so much that he (a Columbia Chem Prof) wrote a really nice rec for me.
  • Volunteer work at my school for helping little kids for 2 years (180 hours total)

Hook:you tell me … Also, does being Italian make any difference? I’ve been getting a mixed reaction about this; tell me what you think + justifications
Personal
Location: NYC
High School Type: Small–Private
Ethnicity: White (Italian citizen; US Permanent Resident)
Gender:male
Other:-my mother never went to college; my dad did. I am middle class in terms of wealth.
Extracurriculars: All my summer activities minus American Cancer Society and School Volunteer work with little kids.
In addition:
-President of Math Club for 2 years (my school is not a STEM magnet school…)
I tripled membership and was able to break the School records for AMC participation (the Club advisor , the head of the math department, wrote a raving rec for me about how I ‘revolutionized’ the club)
-I have been playing Go (ancient Chinese board game) for approx. 15 hrs/week for the past 4 years and have won some local tournaments.
Awards: Nothing big like Siemens or Intel STS unfortunately –just very generic stuff.
-Principal’s award for academic excellence years 10,11,12.

  • Award for best history student in 10th grade (who would have thought …?)

Intended major : Computer Science

Yes, and I am aware of how crappy my ECs are.

tasinari-
Your grades and test scores seem good, and you have a good chance at making it in to SCS (though SCS is still extremely competitive, so don’t get your heart too set)

A few comments:
Your post lists five different people as having written you letters. Five recs is a lot, you might come across as trying too hard

your EC’s are fine (CMU actually has a competitive Go club)
being Italian American isn’t an Under-represented minority, so it isn’t a “hook” per se, but it is not as though it will hurt you.

Can anyone tell me my chances of getting into CSC. My stats are in post 230. Also, would it be beneficial for my chances to apply to another program (MCS)?

tyralis, are you sure that I have a shot at SCS w/ 700 in SAT I math?

Also, yes, I know I have way too many recs to send all of them. I intend to just send my two teacher recs + the columbia chem prof’s rec on my app. The community service and EC ones are not going to add anything that adcoms couldn’t find out by reading the EC section.

Hi, I’m an international applicant (Korean) from Hong Kong applying to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, majoring in International Relations.

My SAT I breakdown is 740 CR, 740 M, 670 W in one sitting.

SAT IIs: 750 Chemistry, 730 Math I, 710 Literature

International Baccalaureate (IB): Biology HL (7), Chemistry HL (6), English HL (6), Psychology SL (6), Chinese B SL (6), Maths SL (7), Theory of Knowledge (A), English Extended Essay (B). TOTAL SCORE: 42/45

My teacher recommendations aren’t amazing, mostly got written as a top 10% student with several 5% ticks. The letters were quite good though, so my counselors and teachers don’t really drag my application down.

Activities: Hong Kong Model United Nations for 2 years (Head Delegate), Beijing Model United Nations for 1 year (Administrator and Head Delegate), Self-funded and organized service and cultural trips to Nepal, Cambodia, Laos and Korea (at least one foreign service trip per year), Junior varsity rugby for 3 years for both the school and the Hong Kong Rugby Football Club, Mountain running club for a year and a few other small community service projects for a year each.

Honors: GCSE Design Technology Honors, Most Honorable Delegate in MUN, Best Delegation in MUN, Gold Honor of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, Administrator of MUN.

My Common Application essay was on the topic of diversity, and I wrote about my experiences in foreign service.

My short essay on an activity was written about my experiences in MUN.

My supplement essay wasn’t amazingly creative, but peer and teacher input tells me that it was well written and expressive.

I would appreciate it if you could give me an idea of my chances, quite worried over two rejections from Columbia and Georgetown already! :S

i really f’ed up my freshman and early sophomore year due to some family problems, however i picked up grades later on in the sophomore year and on. i also have done really well in my math and science classes, however not so great in english and humanities. also how important are SATs for CMU? i have never really done well on those tests for some reason. also i have a question about the supplement. how if i apply to two different colleges do i have to go into great detail about why i chose both, because it seems like the more colleges you apply to the harder it is to actually write a good essay.

Here are my stats. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to interview or show much interest. I am applying to Carnegie Mellon’s school of engineering. What are my chances even if my essays are below average. Recommendations from my teachers and counselor are excellent.
