@ noob- I think you have an excellent chance
@ lip- You need a higher SAT score for SCS

@ Eagles- CMU sorta superscores the ACT. In your profile they write down your highest section scores from all tests and your highest composite score. They do not mix and match section scores to create a higher composite score.

Thnx steelers, that clears my confusion.
If u dont mind, how do u think i stack up for HSS edii??

I think you have a good shot. Your GPA is a bit low but your upward trend seems promising. Why EDII? Why not EDI?

I want to apply edII because i want to have more time to show the committee my grade improvement and also retake the ACT and SAT. do u think this is a good reason to do edII or should i do EDI?? and also if there a statistical difference in acceptance between the two?

I had originally questioned this thread, but oh well. Can’t beat em, join em.

Any ideas? I think I’m about a match, but not sure. SAT1 looks fine, SAT2 eh, GPA is above average from our school.

Also curious - school offers AB, BC, and an AB/BC course (meaning you are prepared for more than the AB exam but less than BC). I’m trying to decide between BC and AB/BC. I would definitely get an A in AB/BC, but more likely a B in BC. Which is worth more?

thank you steel, i’m not applying to SCS, but yeah I’m definitely bumping up score to 2250+
any more advice for H&SS?

@Eagles- That was the exact answer I was hoping for. Those are perfect reasons to apply EDII. I applied EDI because I felt that I was no longer able to show an upward trend in my GPA after the first month of school. In order to conceal my senior grades I felt that EDI was the best choice. If you believe that you can increase your test scores and show an upward trend in you GPA then definitely apply EDII.

@synny- You have above average EC’s and excellent SAT scores. However, synny I’m not sure if your rank/GPA is high enough for SCS and I hope that ED will help boost your chances. Do you go to a magnet/ranked school? At my high school students who take AB usually get B’s but when they take BC the next year the get A’s. I hear that BC is like a refresher course but it may not be as easy at your school. Because AB/BC and BC are probably weighted the same I suggest you take AB/BC and take the A. The “overachievers” will take BC and this might help solve your low rank/GPA problem. I think that the key number is to be in the top 10% of your class. For example, in October I wanted to attend University of Pittsburgh for the six year pharmacy program. Another student from my school applied and although she had an SAT score 200 points higher then mine she got rejected. In order to be considered as an applicant you needed to be in the top ten percent of your class with an SAT score of 1300/1600. At the time I was around top 8-9% with a SAT score of 1310/1600.(Barely made the cut) My friend had a SAT score above 1350 but she was top 11-12%. Moral of the story…rank matters especially top 10%. I think I sorta got off topic but I think I got the message across. Good Luck!

@lip- Your current SAT score should be more than enough for H&SS.

You know, rank isn’t everything. I wasn’t in the top 10% of my class. CMU (I know this for a fact, trust me) doesn’t weigh freshman year as heavily as the last 3 years. This is because they realize that a lot of kids have a hard time adjusting their first year to high school so they weigh it less so these kids don’t get penalized that hard.

@Ato Yeah that is true. The admissions consulars have said that to me before. I screwed up freshman year big time because I just didn’t care about getting good grades. After freshman year my QPA went up .2 each year so I guess CMU noticed that academically I wasn’t the same person.

Interested in CIT for ChemE/BME, MCS as a backup

UW GPA: 4.0
Rank: 1/~70

SAT II: 800 Bio, 790 Math IIC, taking chem next year

AP Classes: AP Bio, BC, US Gov (took in May, scores pending. should be 5s, maybe a 4)

Interesting story/essay: diagnosed with genetic disease when 7 years old, have a medical device in chest to get IVs. So that’s why I’m interested in BME.

EC’s:

volunteered at local hospital ICU one summer, in the lab the next summer. The year before I did the ICU I washed dishes in the hospital’s kitchen. Maybe 100 hours total.

(i’ve been doing all my ECs for all four years of HS)

i know it’s a bit brief, but could someone chance me even though i haven’t told much?

Reach: CFA (no special talents indicated)
Hard Match: SCS (lowish GPA, not too stellar EC’s) they’re VERY selective.
Easy Match: Tepper (almost a safety)
Near safety: every other program, I say “near safety” because of the GPA

SCS is hard. Look at the admissions thread for 2014 and I think one MIT admit got rejected from SCS.

can someone chance me

i think i am going to apply ED to CMU because i visited and i loved it way more than any other school i saw, but i don’t know if i should apply ED to CIT or SCS?

ACT Composite: 34, Writing: 34, Math: 35, Reading: 35, Science: 33.
SATIIs Bio: 740 and i took Chem and MathII and i felt like i did great coming out of them.
GPA: should be somewhere in the 96-98 range
My school does not rank, but i go to a school ranked in the top 50 and top 10 open enrollment by us new.

APs: junior year Chem, APUSH, Computer Science A
senior year macroeconomics, calc BC, Physics, Stats

there are a few more that are minor i won’t bother boring you with.
NHS

if i apply to CIT and when i get there decide i want to transfer over to SCS is it hard to do?

i wouldn’t apply ED unless you’re sure you can pay full tuition. according to the admissions office you aren’t guaranteed good financial aid if you apply early.

i forgot to mention i am not applying for financial aid.

bronco

You can apply ED and if rejected you can reapply RD to another school…but the essays you write will ask you to explain why you want to be in that school and experiences that led to that decision.

You can transfer in and out with space availability if grades are solid in various department- specific weeder courses.

CIT/ECE and SCS are the most difficult programs to gain a spot. CIT - other majors much more likely than SCS for all applicants.

No one ever can explain why some are accepted and seemingly solid applicants are rejected from SCS. Only a few hundred admitted for 120 spots.

If you love CMU- I recommend attending sleeping bag weekend and scheduling an interview to convey your passion for the school with specific information about the school

@mom2012…
do you have any other tips that show ones interest/commitment towards CMU?
