Thanks for your response and the phone number, I’ll call and we plan to visit soon.

Hey FellowThespian,

I am a freshman at a University that does not offer Musical Theatre as a degree. I am looking for a school to transfer to and Shenandoah looks and sounds like a great school. Is it possible to transfer into their program because I know that some schools do not allow that! Also, I have experience in both vocal and theatre performance but a limited background in dance. Do I have a chance at admittance, or do i need to be skilled in all three areas for hopes of acceptance? Any additional information you could give me about the MT program especially would be greatly appreciated! Do they train you with a “this is going to be my career” mindset? because that is definitely an area in which my current school is lacking! Thanks for any info you can provide!

Love to hear from any students (or parents of students) at Shenandoah about how they like the place, what they are up to, etc. Please give us all the details! :)

Hi everyone! Just wanted to give you a quick update on D who is a freshman mt major…SHE LOVES IT!!! She settled in immediately!! She went from being in tears the night before we left to move her down, to feeling at home. Shenandoah has a way of doing that…making you feel at home. She was in some student directed films and really enjoyed that. She loves the staff there, and her vocal coach is incredible. We cannot believe the difference in just one semester!! She leaves to go back this weekend, and sadly for me, she is ready to return to friends and her extremely crazy routine. Dorms open Sunday, classes start Monday, and freshmen audition for the spring musical on Monday also. (I believe the seniors do also!) They jump right in! (but she loves it!) That makes it easier on me…her enjoying it so much. So, all is good in Winchester. It’s funny, we all felt this was “home” during our first visit…and we were in the process of visiting MANY, MANY campuses!!

We are starting the visit process with D2 who is a hs jr. She is a dancer. Shenandoah is on the list. I like that it is a conservatory but you can also do the liberal arts curriculum. Just thought I would post to see if anyone is around who could update on how things are going at Shenandoah these days.

Is your D looking to be a dance major or a MT student? I am not sure that the MT students have a lot of room in their schedules to take many additional liberal arts courses. I teach at James Madison University, which is about 1 hour down the road from Shenandoah. In the summer I am the artistic director of a summer theatre in NH, and hired a few Shenandoah kids this summer. They are doing well, and seem to like the MT program at Shenandoah. I believe they have revamped the curriculum recently. Many of My students in the MT program at JMU have friends at Shenandoah. They say that their friends really like it, particularly the ones who wanted a conservatory program.

KatMT, my D would be a dance major not a MT.

If you have already you may want to post on the dance major forum as well. It is not organized the same way with specific linked forums for some schools, but you could start your own thread with questions about the schools you are looking at. You can also try searching NY going there and clicking on “search this forum” or “search this thread”.

We are heading to Sheanadoah on the 22 for the dance auditions. I am wondering what the weather is like there? We are much colder than usual in here in Cinci, as I understand most of the Est is. But what is typical late Jan weater like?
Also, I thin someone asked this above, is there any mixing of the dance and MT programs? Either in classes, or performances? Can dancers take voice lessons? Current D is very off singing but is really a dancer who sings. Although this is not a make or break item at all, we were just wondering.

I’m a few hours from Winchester in Virginia and my D auditioned for MT in 2008. You can expect temperatures to range from the 20s to the 40s in Jan. with varying winds. We do get occasional snow. I would think you would need a winter coat, gloves, hat, scarf (etc) to be comfortable walking around campus. There is plenty of parking at the Performing Arts Building where auditions are held so you won’t have far to walk.
I’m not sure about the mixing of the programs in the conservatory.

I know I’m digging up old dirt, but i found this very helpful. I am in the process of transferring from the current university I am attending, to a conservatory, and my Shenandoah was like it was fate almost. I went in to audition and got the best feedback and they seemed so interested in me and the school, along with the students were just so amazing. I loved the welcoming environment and the overall feel of the university. It reminds me a lot of Elon University, very beautiful campus, and VERY helpful and caring student body and faculty. I still have to audition for UNCSA, Roosevelt, and Hartt, but Shenandoah is definitely up there on my list.
