The Dean of Admissions is looking into making changes [next year]

YES! I remember: Letter #1 vs. letter #2 vs letter #3… they went NUTS! It was a very similar situation to the status frenzy over here.

Hmm… I think something might be going on between Tim and Susan… between lunch and 5 pm both were unaccounted for…

It would be easier if USC allowed you to see your status and let you know what is outstanding or if everything is complete and date they will notify students. If applicants get notified earlier so be it. Many other colleges do it that way. No guessing, just waiting. Yeah, we keep checking and trying to figure it all. Or… maybe they do it this way so you constantly keep checking and don’t forget that USC is one of your choices.

And that is what I suggested to the Dean of Admissions.:
from my letter to her-
“In summary, may I suggest that USC adopt a simpler online notification system for applications that alerts students only when
1] any parts of an application are missing
2] when their mid term grades have been received [ if they are required]
3] when their application is complete
4] when a decision has been reached
5] what the decision is.”

It’s just like packages under the Christmas tree (if you imagine that half of the presents are lumps of coal). Some people get pleasure out of shaking and squeezing, trying to guess what is in them. I suppose some find it stressful, and would prefer to have the presents hidden until Christmas morning.

In all due respect, everything menloparkmom mentioned USC implements into the new online check system already occurs. I didn’t have a problem when I was applying to USC last year with checking to see what I needed to submit and what they’ve already received. People check the thing expecting it to say like “Oh we looked at your application and you’re probably going to get in!” USC Admissions deals with 35,000+ applications every single year, give them a break. Years ago, there wasn’t even any online status check, you’d send in an application and then wait for the letter. Parents and kids are too antsy nowadays.

Also, if you’ve read posts on College Confidential, you’ll see that there is a trend in how USC sends out acceptances and rejections. Acceptances come out in waves starting February - March, and rejection letters are sent out early April.
