The dicey world of mattresses

lizard…I was not referring to bacteria from former guests. I mean super toxic chemicals they apply at the factory.

It is creepy that virtually all of my banner ads are now for mattresses.

There are some interesting and possibly useful reviews on Sleep Like The Dead. But even if 80% of people prefer mattress X, that may not be helpful to the other 20% of prospective sleepers. Or whatever you plan to do on your mattress.

DS is looking to buy a bed (he’s young, I recommend cheap) for his apartment, and I want to replace his childhood twin with a queen and make his room into the guest room. Bed in a box is looking good.

Nordstrom’s [Ordering the Westin Heavenly Bed®](http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/westin-heavenly-bed-ordering-the-heavenly-bed?origin=leftnav) has the WESTIN Heavenly Bed for $1795. That seems about the price I expect to pay for a good quality mattress. Is it a good mattress??? It says it is medium to firm which sounds good to me. As I said previously, hubby almost always likes the hotel mattresses when he goes away and he stays at decent places, so I bet he would like this one. I will never convince him that it is HIM and not the bed! I do have a 3-4" memory foam topper on our current bed. The topper is about 3 years old. I don’t know if they wear out. It is on a very old king mattress that used to be firm.

Does anybody know if the price is negotiable if we go into the store (Nordstrom’s)and order it? Macy’s has king beds for less and for much more. I don’t know if Macy’s negotiates off their “sale” prices either.

I can get to a Nordstroms that carries it, so we might take a short trip and check it out.

Am I the last grown-up who still buys mattresses at IKEA?

I hate pillow-tops, saggy spring mattresses, and mattress shopping.

We slept on a queen-sized latex foam mattress on top of a platform bed for almost 20 years (probably 5-8 years too long); then an IKEA Finnvik on top of the same platform for the last 5. Finnvik is a latex + memory foam sandwich. IKEA also sells all-latex and all-memory foam. Suits us fine – doesn’t feel harshly firm, overly poufy, or saggy. And the best part - there is no negotiating an IKEA mattress price.

I will try to remember to read about the ikea ones. My kids got ikea mattresses when I finally let them graduate to full size. They seemed to like them.

I haggle in dept stores. I’ve bought items like nice leather purses In Macy’s after haggling…I don’t know why one couldn’t negotiate price buying a mattress in a store like Nordstroms or Macys. Customers are in the driver’s seat… if you can’t purchase an item at your terms and price, the store doesn’t get a sale.

I’ve stayed at Westins and the Heavenly Bed is terrific. That price is NOT all that much more than a queen Tempurpedic. If we hadn’t gotten a Tempurpedic, we probably would have gotten a heavenly bed!

We have a full size Tempurpedic (and yes, two of us fit fine. We are not very big). The full size complete was about $1200 and that was 10 years ago.

As my husband said at the time…we spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed. Might as well be comfortable. So we got what was comfortable for us.

“be careful most new mattresses are coated in toxic chemicals.
google toxic mattresses before you buy one.”

True for some yoga mats, too. But sleeping on one will give you a much better night’s sleep.

For $60 or so, you could try it for a week, and see what you think.

When I was travelling for work a lot, I found myself leaning toward Marriott’s because the beds were so comfortable. It was the first time I’d woken up without a back or neck ache in a long time. I have had a latex foam bed for 7 or 8 years now and it is getting softer and softer. It was great at first, but it is definitely breaking down, especially since I used to sit on the edge of it a lot. Also, it is definitely too warm.

You can buy the Marriott beds off of their web site and I will probably do that next time because I know I’ve slept in them all night, for several nights in a row and didn’t have any pain. Those were great beds.

The only problem is, I also want an adjustable bed.

I seem to recall stumbling upon some information that the Heavenly Beds currently sold at retail are not the same as the mattresses used in the hotels. I’m sorry I can’t recall the source of this information. This was from some months ago when I spent lots of hours researching mattresses, only to decide due to reasons stated in many posts above that I would rather sleep on our old one than have to make a decision about a new one.

A major issue IMO is that many mattress reviews from reputable sites such as Macys and Costco have a majority of very happy new buyers with a smaller but significant number of buyers who were happy at the outset but found that the mattress developed major sagging or humps in the middle after a number of months. One report I read indicated that pillowtop or foam-top mattresses have a higher percentage of unhappy buyers months down the road than do standard mattresses. It’s hard to find standard mattresses, though. The trend seems to be a foam/pillow layer on top.

Just thinking about this has given me a headache. I’m going back to bed.

I like the Marriott beds too.
We have a memory foam from bed in a box & while H liked it, I felt it was too hot so I bought a good egg crate type pad that insulates the foam.
Such an improvement.

Mini , I like to store my out of season shoes under the bed. If I slept on a yoga mat, where would the dust bunnies live?

So your asthma and allergies would improve too!

Good point. They were awful today, we must have been having an inversion.
My eyes were watering so bad I couldn’t see.
I was actually just reminiscing about our old waterbed.
I think they should make a comeback.

Anxiousmom,
By adjustable frame, one can raise the head and/or feet. One doesn’t need to mess with lots of pillows.

We had a pipe break over our bed recently. The combination of the egg crate foam and the foam cover that came with our mattress from bedinabox, saved us from having to replace the mattress. We just have to replace the cover.
Much less hassle & expense.

Now if we can just make it through the end of the year without something else happening.

Some people equate memory foam with Temperpedic. I hate the Temperpedic feel. I don’t like to sink into a hole, nor do I think that softness is good for my back issues.

I do however love our memory foam mattress. It is a Serta 8" foam mattress. The bottom 6" is a dense foam with lots of support. The top layer is a much softer memory foam. Overrall it is still a pretty firm mattress. I also loved the price. I bought ours from Overstock based entirely on internet research. Also I was buying for an RV and needed 8" or less. That is difficult to find. It is a full Queen and cost about $325 delivered. Afterwards we found the same mattress at Sleepys for just less than $1000. We have used the mattress for 3 years with absolutely no signs of wear. Currently we have it in the house and will be buying another for the RV.

I will never buy another spring mattress. Even the high quality ones seem to sag and lose support within a very few years. It seems like we went through a lot of them over the years. I guess the foam mattress may eventually die but it appears that the life will be much longer and of course replacement costs would be minimal.

I have never understood the necessity for a box spring except as an excuse to bump up the price. With the typical 12-15" thick mattress, a box spring should not be needed. In addition they seem to sag after a few years of use.

Anyway for a change I feel like I bought something at a reasonable price that will last for a long time.

I’m in the market for 2 beds (queen; twin). went into Sleepy’s with ad in hand (sale! $499 for queen mattress and box spring!)

There were 2 sales people in the store. Both were busy. One said “we’ll be right with you – take a nap”.

10 minutes later, I left. And all the mattresses on display were Tempur Pedic. Not the Sealy PosturPedic advertised with the sale price.

If they don’t have the sale items on display, how can you buy them? By price alone? You don’t sleep on price.

I’m ready for a hammock. I think that would work.

My daughter uses a hammock when she goes camping.
I expect if I used one it would be appropriate for a comedy short.

Not sure if allowed to post it, but when I was looking for a mattress a few years ago, I stumbled across this excellent blog:
