The Dog Lovers Thread

Congrats Kitty on your new “baby”.

Hi I’m sunnie and I’m owned by two female schnauzers. Izzie is 8 yrs old, a standard and Sadie year and a half old, mini schnauzer. Sadie recently adopted me and is turning out to be quite the puppy! Been along time since I had a puppy in the house. All three previous rescues were older dogs, the males were seniors. Once I recover from our first weekend, I’ll regale you with tales, but I’m too tired right now :)

Well our pooch almost had us in tears last evening. I had burnt a DVD of my D’s latest recital and my W and I decided to watch it. Well our dog was in the other room sound asleep but as soon he heard the music (which she practices at home) he got up, went to the basement stairs and started cry. That is where all of her percussion equipment is. We could not comfort him. We had to stop the DVD and take him out for a walk just to take his mind off of her. Whoever says that dogs dont have sentimental feelings has never owned a dog. All we have to do is say our D’s name and he takes off and runs to the front window watching for her car to come in, It is so sad to see but also so sweet, believe me, our D gets drowned in kisses when she does come home.

percussiondad,

That is so sweet! Our Australian Shepherd is a big crybaby. He has a crush on my son’s GF. When she comes by I will sometimes try to make him sit and not maul the poor girl, but he sobs so pathetically until she comes and gives him a little love. He’s pathetic!

Aw, what a sweet story percussiondad!! Our lab definitely misses our boys, but when they come home she goes bonkers over them for about a minute, then it’s like everything is normal again. We laugh that she has no sense of time elapsing, so instead of them being gone for 3 months, it feels to her like the boys just went to the end of the driveway to get the paper and then came back in.

My dog is inconsolable when my D is away at school. He is a one-woman dog and is emphatically depressed without her. They do Skype fairly often, but he is so lonely without his girl and no one else is ever good enough.

Here are a couple of dog lover books -

Stay by Allie Larkin

Suspect by Robert Crais

For any dog lovers with older dogs who get constipated - try a teaspoon of canned pumpkin a couple times a day. Our 15 year old jack Russell loves the stuff and is much happier with her system running smoothly. Vet friends recommendation.

zoosermom, that’s so sad. They really do feel the absence of their “people.” Our chihuahua always seems down after our son leaves but our Great Pyrenees/St. Bernard mix has a special friend, my son’s best friend who doesn’t have pets of his own. Fortunately, his college is only a few hours away and when he is coming into town he texts me to see if he can come to visit her. Sometimes I just leave him a key so they can have their quiet time. He has been home for a few days and stopped by each of the last two nights to give her some special attention. She is so happy!

One of the most beautiful dog stories I ever read was the story of Dog Monday in the last of the Anne of Green Gables books.

Dog Monday was the little dog of Anne’s son who went away to World War I. He delivered his boy to the train which took him away, and then stayed in the warehouse at the train station waiting patiently until the day, years later, that the train brought his boy home. It is exquisitely written and the book, itself, is a magnificent telling of such a terrible time in history. I highly recommend it to young people and even to adults, particularly the breed to be moved by such a model of canine devotion.

Even reading your post makes me tear up. I only wish I had had dogs as a child…and am so glad my kids have had four special canine friends in their lives so far.

<— you’d think I was a deity of some kind from my username, huh?
It’s actually the name of my dog spelled backwards! Ran out of ideas. LOL.

Our dog is 10 years old but looks like a puppy. He’s a golden cockerpoo mix who is often mistaken as a wheaton. Very bright, loyal and loves to sleep.

Zoosermom, I totally understand what your dog is going through. Our dog is the same way when we leave him with my SIL when we go on vacation. At first, I had a hard time believing it but he also gets attached to my SIL and acts depressed also when he comes back to us and doesn’t see her. He only likes women :D

I have a toy poodle. She is turning 13 in a couple days. She follows me everywhere. I had a cat too. He is recently missing. Unfortunately more than likely killed by a coyote. My son’s are living in my townhouse in St. Pete. My oldest is graduating in August. His gf moved in a few months ago. She wasn’t sure if the job she got in the area was going to be a full time job. She had an dog which had to be put down due to large tumors a couple weeks ago. She called yesterday that she would like to get another dog. My son wants to stay in St. Pete but doesn’t have a career job yet. The townhouse has wood floors and no yard. I already told my son no on a dog a few months back because I didn’t think it was a good idea until he knows what he is doing. None of them are paying rent. I thought after college was done would discuss that. His younger brother would still have the same deal but he is thinking of joining the Marines. I understand how his gf feels after losing her dog. I told her I would need to think about it.

Fwiw, if it’s a temporary situation and they can afford it, fostering is always a great option.
We just added a new foster to our pack. His name’s Moose and we think he’s part pit, part great Dane, with maybe some Mastiff. We’re his foster while he recovers from surgery and learns how to live inside.

How much does he weigh? He sounds huge!

He’s pretty underweight but still over 100. I think his target weight is around 130. He’s huge and he’s all legs. I’m pretty sure he wants to be a lap dog though.

@zoosermom, The story of Dog Monday reminds me of the real life story of Hachiko

There used to be a great dane at our dog park. He was sweetest thing and my elkhound adored him. He made my elkie look like a pup. (Bless you for fostering the big guy.)

For those of you who travel with pets, do you have any pointers regarding a New York City stay? We’re staying in a pet friendly hotel in Tribeca, but plan to catch my son’s show while there. Have you used a pet sitting service while out for a couple of hours? Other thoughts? I’ve put in a text to my son to ask around for interested/available friends. But typically, he’s much too busy to follow through.

I would love to own a Great Dane or maybe even two. Gosh, they’d had my heart for too long now. I doubt I would ever own one.

I’m hoping to get a Shiba, German Shephard, or a Doberman in the future.
