The dreaded text from abroad...

sorghum- they don’t fight bulls in the entire country; Catalonia outlawed it in 2010!

yes peacefulmom, it does sound like she’s in good hands. kind of nice seeing your young adult manage abroad, my s had a throat infection and went to the National Health Service in London while abroad for the year. He similarly reported what a positive experience it was, NO waiting, got same day appointment, pleasant office, and was given antibiotics by the doctor.

myturnnow, “going to” the NHS is not really a thing…if you go into any hospital or doctor’s surgery which isn’t specifically called private, you are being treated by the NHS.

and yes, it is an absolute marvel, one of the most wonderful things about the UK and a (literal) life-saver for millions of people across the country.

Well, as I suspected something small really was something bigger. With this child, it is never little. The panoramic scan showed an abscess and today when she went back to the dentist she needed a surgical procedure. They needed to cut the infected gum away. drain the abscess and stitch the area up. They changed her antibiotic and she will be seen again next week. She went alone, as she didn’t realize that this follow-up appointment would actually entail a painful procedure. I am thankful that she seems to be receiving good care, but I am hoping that she will heal well.

Hoping this all goes well! My D needed some dental treatment when she was in a European country. Cost her only $10 Euros for a checkup and panomamic x-ray. So that was some good news, that the cost was much less than it would have been here. Hopefully the same will be true for your D’s treatment and she will heal quickly!

Update-- D spiked a fever of 103 this morning. She went back to the dentist. The swelling is down, her pain is minimal and upon examination he felt it was okay. He explained that occasionally a fever can happen this far after (six days later) as her body is run down. I spoke with the surgeon at home who felt that so long as she was examined and it looked okay, that it could be a separate illness or just her body fighting the infection. Does this make sense? She never runs fevers, except when she was younger after intensive three day soccer tournaments. Any input would be appreciated.

peacefulmom- I’m sure that she’ll be fine. The fever may have gained a foothold before the new antibiotic kicked in, so give it a day. Have her force fluids and rest, and head back to the dentist or the hospital or nearest Pharmacia (perhaps a friend could head over to pick up something to bring down the fever now?)should she feel worse or not improve in 48 hours. Please let us know.

She saw the dentist on Tuesday for the fever and went back on Thursday to have the nine stitches removed. There definitely was a communication gap on the day of the surgery. She went to school the next day and Monday and the dentist assumed she would know to stay home and rest. He actually may have told her to and she misunderstood. She has been accompanied to all of her follow-up appointments by a program director since the surgery. The dentist is keeping her on the antibiotics until at least this Monday when he sees her again. Given this kids history, I am hoping the dentist will continue the antibiotics until all of the pain and swelling diminish completely. If there is a chance of any further complications, it will happen with this one.

One complete aside is that her Madre (home stay mother) is teaching her to iron and to sew. She told her that she will need domestic skills before she gets married. She told her that her mom is not very domestic, and she offered to teach me to iron and sew when I go to visit.

Thank you Mezzo’sMama for your advice!

I’ll be waiting for your post about today’s visit! Glad that she’s feeling better and that the program director is going along to the appointments. I’m certain that the dentist did figure that your D wouldn’t go to class and would take it easy- as much as I adore the country, college students there are very different from those here. They don’t think it necessary to attend class regularly and it’s quite common for them to fail a class but retake the final exam- which they may do, up to 4-5 times by just paying the exam fee.
Is her “Madre” giving her cooking tips too? Home made gazpacho is heavenly!
