The economy and theatre

Follow Up…was about to get the discount tix for Avenue Q but then decided to try for the second level pricing for In the Heights which doesn’t cost THAT much more than discount orchestra for Avenue Q. The seats are not as good but I’m a little more interested in seeing it (though I really do like the music from Avenue Q). My daughter was playing In The Heights on every car ride over Thanksgiving and so there was that influence. So, we decided to order In the Heights and I just got 'em. :)

In the Heights was great! Saw it last March. I just saw the pre broadway run of Dirty Dancing. Not good! I don’t think its going to make it. What a shame. Such talent.

If anyone sees Shrek I’d love to know what you think. I have a student who is a swing in the show and is playing Humpty Dumpty this week. She actually swings 6 parts and says it’s incredibly difficult since you get no rehearsal time with each role. The photos and promo look adorable. I can’t wait to see her when we go to Unifieds.

Congrats to your student! Being a swing sounds very challenging!

The character names are too funny, Imagine going to college and that your exciting news is that you made it to Broadway and your resume has a credit that says “Humpty Dumpty”…you likely have never imagined you would aspire to that role in a million years. Who knew there would be such a role on Broadway? The name of the role would typically conjure up a credit you had in kindergarten, LOL.

Grease is closing, according to the New York Times.

I would definitely go see In the Heights. We saw it in June when we were on vacation and my D and I loved it. I actually got tickets before we left CA and was able to get seats in the rear mezzanine for $35 each and they were not bad. We saw the show on a Sunday afternoon and it was pouring rain when we came out of the theatre, but my girls waited at the stagedoor and all the cast came out even in the bad weather and took pictures and were all so nice.

My husband and I went last night and saw Xanadu at the La Jolla Playhouse as it is here through the end of the month before going on tour. It was a really fun show. It was an evening of theatre that doesn’t change the world or anything, but makes you laugh! My girls saw it in previews last month and sat on stage and had a great time. They are going again the week of Christmas to sit on stage with friends for the show. Discount stage tickets are only $16.50! My older D is on the student board at the La Jolla Playhouse and helped out during tech week for the show. She said all of the cast is really great.

showmom, I did get tix to In The Heights and while I did not get the most expensive, I did not get the cheapest…I got in between.

I rarely use TKTS. In the past year, I was in NYC and was alone for part of the time and so figured I’d go to TKTS and see what they had. I went to see Xanadu even though I didn’t have a burning desire to see it (though I enjoy any Broadway show!). It is purely entertainment fluff, though good at what it is. I prefer a show with more substance to the story or more creativity. However, the cast had many very top talented performers and so that is always a treat.

Soozievt - I didn’t have a big desire to see Xanadu either, but the girls said it was so much fun we decided to go to. I agree that it is pretty fluffy and also enjoy musicals and plays with a little more to them, but the La Jolla Playhouse is right around the corner from us and we always try to see most shows there both the good and the not so good!

I hope you enjoy In the Heights. I love the music from the show and have it playing quite often as I run the kids around town!

My D and I saw In The Heights pre-Tony! and sat in the 2nd to last row WWWWWAAAAAYYYY up high! We were sitting by all the friends of cast members, so that was fun! But anyway, we loved it, even from up there! Enjoy it soozievt! I want to see it again!

Thanks, I am looking forward to it. My D tells me she got two discounted tix for In the Heights for next week when her work is done (the discount is a special offer available to NYU students). She is quite into the music and was playing it for her sister when they saw one another over Thanksgiving.

I am heading to NYC next week and will be seeing some of the shows mentioned in the recent posts. When we planned this trip there weren’t many discounts available. Waiting would probably have been a good idea in terms of savings.

CAGriffin, you’d be surprised to hear that a lot of the shows, especially ones like Billy Elliott, In the Heights, and South Pacific, are continuing to do well ticket sales wise.

Especially over Thanksgiving most shows sold out, yay! D had friends in town, and they had planned to rush shows (D was not very organized in getting tix ahead of time through NYU). Have a great time in NY next week!

Does the other shows have discounts for NYU students? I am taking my mom next week and she wants to see Billy Elliot or South Pacific. My daughter is at Tisch.

Actressmom, it doesn’t work that way at Tisch. If you go to Ticket Central at NYU, it explains everything. They run “specials” for certain Broadway shows for certain dates. For instance, one day this past week, they had a special for In The Heights for this coming Wednesday night. You would have had to order them online or by phone within minutes of them making them available to get them. My D did that online and got that discount (limit of two tickets per person). But it is not like you can order ANY show at a discount for ANY performance date and order them at ANY time.

And for NYU or anyone, I have not seen discounts through any source for Billy Elliot or South Pacific and both of those shows tend to be sold out at most performances on short notice.

[Playbill News: American Musical Theatre of San Jose Cancels Productions of 42nd Street, Tarzan and Closes Doors](http://www.playbill.com/news/article/123849.html)

Very sad news about the demise of one of the oldest musical theatre companies in the country.

My D performed in San Jose with the San Jose Symphony and I recall that soon after she performed with them, that they also had to shut down and if you add in American Musical Theatre of San Jose closing, that’s sad in sum for performing arts in San Jose. The Symphony was a while back.

PS…out of curiosity, I went to look up when it was that San Jose Symphony shut down and it was 2002 and I read that they have come back now as Symphony Silicon Valley and so let’s hope that American Musical Theatre of San Jose can likewise make a come back in the future.

It is sad, Susan, and particularly disturbing news about Atlanta’s Theatre of the Stars and their part in all of this. Maybe the most disturbing part of all is that the mismanagement of funds and huge loss of revenue was due to the dreck, and I’m sorry, but that’s what it is, of High School Musical.

Yeah, I read the article and it sounds like a mess and that the Musical Theater of San Jose is losing out due to what happened with Atlanta’s Theatre of the Stars.

Obviously we have members on CC whose kids are in that production of HS Musical in Atlanta and elsewhere. When various summer theaters were doing that show, my D was VERY disinterested in auditioning. I know work is work and that is a show that employs people her age but she just really hates the idea of ever being in HS Musical!

That’s so funny that your D is not at all interested in HS Musical as mine is not either! One of the local theatre companies is doing HS Musical 2 for the spring and auditions are next month. All of my D’s friends keep asking if she will be auditioning as many of them are. She is cast as Eponine in Les Miz which will be in rehearsals still as it’s not opening until Feb so she uses this as her excuse why she isn’t auditioning!

AlwaysAMom,
I read your comment and then went away from it and came back to it. What TOTS did as far as money mismanagement was incredibly wrong and irresponsible. To jeopardize another production company as well as your own is just incomprehensible.
That being said…while some may not like the story line or the music of the High School Musical series of films/shows, I take offense at your calling it “dreck”. My D was in the production at TOTS. It was cast with an all equity cast of hard working and well trained actors. Of course the cast had no idea what was going on with TOTS management. The director, choreographer, musical director were all wonderful and it was a great experience. She is now doing the same show at NSMT again cast with mainly equity actors.
I have rarely heard of actors who are just out of college who will turn down an equity gig at excellent regional theaters (which TOTS was before this mess and NSMT is reputed to be) because the show doesn’t meet their highest literary or intellectual expectations. If that was true, then many actors would be turning down jobs left and right with some of the shows out there.
My D is building her resume, working with some wonderful directors and professionals, getting a paycheck and health benefits and doing the thing she loves most…being onstage.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all got to work at the highest level of our training every day. Unfortunately it’s not always feasible.
