In terms of percentage of students receiving need-based aid, Vanderbilt does indeed do slightly better than Emory, Rice, Tulane, Davidson, W&L, and slightly less well than Duke. But among the southern schools, by far the most effective of the non-HBC institutions in reaching out to low-income students is Agnes Scott. (though I don’t know about Berry College, with its huge endowment, and I am most definitely not counting Berea, which beats them all.)

Vandy doesn’t have much ethnic diversity, either. It’s 80% US/white.

The most diverse elite colleges on the East Coast are in the 55% to 65% white range. Duke is 64%. Emory is 69%.

I am sure that Vandy is trying, but they are very late to the party and have a lot of catching up to do. It would not be a school that would pop immediately to mind if you asked about diversity and “egalitarianism”.

vandy may be late to the “party”, but they have hot girls and throw ridiculous keggers
