I texted my daughter to make sure before I posted the number. The 10 hours is just ballet, jazz, and modern. That doesn’t include Voice and Movement…just straight dance classes. When they are seniors they add tap and MT dance. Yes, Ithaca has upped their dance game (and now require a dance prescreen). They are acting first, no doubt. But they put on a dance show every two years for the MTs and Acting majors (and dance minors), and one of their musicals every year is typically dance heavy. Last year it was How to Succeed, this year it’s A Chorus Line. But Ithaca is a conservatory. It’s at a LAC, but it’s a conservatory. My D had only one gen ed her first 2 years (a required English seminar). This year, they instituted a new program where the kids have to take more gen eds. But when my D graduates, I think she will have taken a total of 4 gen ed classes. She’s taking 2 this semester…she gets none next semester in London (it’s all voice, stage combat, Shakespeare, theatre history and that type of thing); then senior year she has to take one more on top of all her MT classes. The MTs are really considered a double major in Voice and Theatre with a minor in dance. There is no room for anything else. The MT kids are finding it almost impossible to take the new required gen eds b/c of their schedule. A ton of them are taking “Insects and People” b/ it’s the only class they could fit in. The MT kids are not happy with the requirement, and we are pretty sure it will be abolished…unfortunately, my D’s class are the guinea pigs and they have to live with it for now. But until they instituted this new requirement, I think she would have graduated with only 2 gen ed classes her entire 4 years. Very, very different from NYU as far as # of gen eds required.
