The Frozen River - June CC Book Club Selection

I read James and enjoyed it. I haven’t heard of the others so I’m keeping quiet.

You can’t get James yet through my library system. I also hesitate to read it without reading Huckleberry Finn first and I haven’t. Substitute Huckleberry Finn for James, maybe; at least, everyone could access it. Though, to be honest, maybe nobody else is interested in going the classic route again at the moment.

I tried to start reading James but kept getting distracted by the dialect so gave up. I realize it’s integral to the story but it just felt like speed bumps or brakes or some other analogy that interfered with my reading process.

Side note, Frozen River just came through on my Libby hold - I checked it out but am trying to decide if I still want to read it.

Other side note, all the suggested books except for Extinction show on hold in my library system, I don’t know how long the holds are.

Okay, thanks for the input. I’ll leave off The Lion Women of Tehran and James. (And I don’t think Huckleberry Finn would generate a whole lot of interest.)

All five of the other choices are available immediately from my library, so I’m hoping that means that it might be a short wait for @Marilyn and others. Give me a minute and I’ll post the ballot link.

Ballot (titles are in alphabetical order / all votes are anonymous, including to me):

Best to rank all five books, rather than just vote for one or two. Have fun!

And here is the results link, which will continually change until voting has stopped (usually after 12-15 votes):

FWIW, the only V.E. Schwab book I read, I found quite disappointing. Did not bother with its sequels.

I agree. I read the same one you did and didn’t continue the trilogy either. However, from what I hear, Addie LaRue is much better. Note from what I hear, since I haven’t read it.

I read Addie LaRue and liked it but didn’t love it.

We had a good turnout of 15 voters and the winner is The Bird Hotel by Joyce Maynard.

@CBBBlinker has already read it, but considering everything she has to read for her “Books on the Beach” group, she may be glad to have a break!

I’ll start a new thread.

Also, thanks @ignatius: I didn’t know what to get my husband for Father’s Day…and now he’s getting Extinction. I had never heard of it, but it sounds like a summer read that’s right up his alley.

It wasn’t my first choice, but I’ve never read Maynard, so I consider it good for me!

I’ve put it on hold so will see when I can get hold of a copy from the library. They have 2 ebooks.

I put it on hold yesterday while we were voting! It popped up as available today, but I put if off for a bit. I would forget too much if I read 2 months ahead

The ebook hold says about nine weeks but it will likely be sooner. The hard copy shows a few available now but I’m not ready, so will request in July.

I AM glad! Summers get a bit dicey with reading since Books on the Beach meets every 2 weeks!

I snagged it on E-bay as none of the 7 libraries in the consortium have it.

I put a hold on it as soon as I saw the preliminary vote. It is available with a short wait so I should be joining you all in August. I’m excited! Haven’t had a lot of luck with popular books at our library.
The way the wait list is progressing for The Frozen River, I may be getting that in August as well and I’ll catch up with all the posts here after that.

I put it on hold after voting and picked it up yesterday. Yeah, we won’t be discussing it for two more months, but hopefully my brain will still be able to recall things by then!
