The Glass Room – December CC Book Club Selection

Suggestions so far:

Possession by A.S. Byatt

The Round House by Louise Erdrich

A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton

SouthJerseyChessMom, psychmom, BUandBC82, bookworm, buenavista, PATheaterMom, etc.? Any thoughts on the above or additional suggestions?

We had mentioned the idea of a love story, it being February and all, so maybe someone has another thought on a love story by a woman author?

I suggested The Stockholm Octavo.

Iv’e been hearing about Possession for a while-would love to read that! The other suggestions are good too!

Possession looks good to me.

Possession would be my first choice also (even though I threw in another title for consideration :p).

Persuasion by Jane Austen.

Oops, ignatius, I forgot to add your suggestion :o.

So we have:

Possession by A.S. Byatt

The Round House by Louise Erdrich

A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton

The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann

Persuasion by Jane Austen

So let’s vote (and pretend the winner isn’t a foregone conclusion ;))*. Rank your top three!

*edited to add: ooh Persuasion–good choice. I’m happy with anything on the list, but the first and the last choices above are my favorites.

Oh wow. Persuasion

Persuasion

Possession

The Stockholm Octavo

Most interested in either of the first two books …

Persuasion or Possession

The Round House

The Stockholm Octavo

Popping in to say anything but Persuasion. Can’t let the the Austenphiles run the table! My “real” book club read Persuasion a couple of years ago. If Austen’s not your thing, it’s an unbearable slog.

^ MommaJ, “unbearable slog” is how my husband feels about anything written by Jane Austen. :)

I’m an Austen lover in the right setting. She doesn’t work on the beach or on a camping trip, but if I’m wrapped up in a blanket on the couch in mid-winter, I find her…excessively diverting.

My top three:

Possession

Persuasion

The Round House

I’d say discussing Austen has its time and place, and MommaJ might be right. Having read both Persuasion and Possession, I’d say the latter gives plenty of that “fall into the book” feeling that Mary describes in her “blanket on the couch” image.

Let’s keep Stockholm Octavo on the list, at least for the future - it looks very interesting and a nice change. And I like The Round House, too, but it doesn’t exactly look like romantic February reading.

My opinion is that Possession has it all - lots of romance, contemporary and historical settings, gobs of literary elements, and a touch of mystery.

Possession it is.

I’m looking forward to it. I’ll start a new thread.

Of course, everyone should feel free to continue commenting here should any more brilliant observations on The Glass Room come to mind. :)

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to everyone!

Adding to Mary’s holiday wishes and thanking everyone for another great discussion! See ya in February!

Looking very much forward to reading Possession.

Echoing Mary’s holiday wishes to everyone.

Mary: As usual, thanks for time spent leading the CC book club. I imagine you must feel like you are herding cats at next-book-selection time. ;)

Sorry a bit late here, and I’m blaming my new Ipad for this. Is there any work around the problem, that I can only post via the app, at random times?

I’m very pleased with the selection, and mostly because Mary13 has read it, and others. It would have been my first place selection.

I had my Chicago/ San Francisco and Philly kids home for one week during Thanksgiving ,and didn’t find the time to read The Glass Room in time for the discussion, which I enjoyed as I read the book. So thanks to all.

Hannukah and Christmas greetings to all. Such a great group, and growing larger ! Thoughts are with you Mary as you face the upcoming holiday without your father. Peace to you and your family.

Thanks everyone. Best cats I ever herded. :)

Thank you to Mary for her continued fine leadership and her deftness in guiding all us cats through the tricky discussion of The Glass Room.

Holiday best wishes to all!

Looking forward to reading and discussing Possesion!
