Door is ordered. I saved well over $250, basically just by asking for a discount at Home Depot.
I may or may not open their credit card to save an extra 100. I probably won’t, but I am considering it.
Excellent! Never hurts to ask for a few dollars off.
Thanks for the comments re: linoleum. There is very little I like about this house including the kitchen floor.
@2014mom I would suggest painting the door a nice dark forest green or something else that looks good with brick. Trying to match the color of the brick is not a good idea, IMHO.
Yes to a contrast color!
I agree. I also like dark blue with brick. I ended up painting our front door a sort of slate blue and was quite amused when our neighbors went out and painted theirs the same color. Our house is red brick, but a darker red than I see from modern bricks. Window and door trim is white.
Some of the dark blue doors also looked great.
@2014mom , do you have shutters, and if so are they also tan?
Thanks for the suggestions. The door is ordered, but I can change my mind until they come and measure. The red I’m getting goes with the brick, but isn’t the same color, if that makes any sense. When we first moved in our current door was green, but we didn’t like it and had it painted red. Our house does not have shutters, though many on our street do. There are only limited colors you can get with these doors, and the couple people I’ve asked agree this shade of red looks the best. One of the reasons I went with the door I’m getting is the color selection is a little better.
You guys do have me thinking about the blue… I may get a few more opinions
The right kind of red would work with brick, too! There are some very attractive reds in the google search posted by Consolation.
Our current house has a blue door. I don’t like it. It’s too dark against the brick. I think if they had gone with a lighter and brighter shade it would have looked nicer. That said, we live in a historic district so the preservation society has to approve the colors. The most non conventional color in the area is a light lilac.
I did have dark blue at one point, Pratt & Lambert, and the color oxidized pretty quickly. The thing about some reds is they can sometimes minimize the dark look of some brick.
Some say that if the door faces north, blue is the way to go, and reds are good/lucky colors for south-facing doors.
Our home was a spec house and he obviously ran out of money (our luck!) and put in a fibreglass shower, I hated it. Also, I have a rental with a lovely tiled shower, but a shower pan, I had never really used a shower pan, but it’s kind of spongy, soft, weird, I am aware of it. Guess I need to go post on the snob thread, but I don’t prefer that kind of shower.
I consulted with a realtor that sells a lot of houses in our neighborhood today, to discuss what we should do to prep for sale in 2 years or so. Red door was her vote.
I’m happy to report that we don’t have a lot to do, other than expected “refreshing” and staging, and replacing some outdated (and ugly) light fixtures.
We need a new vanity in the master bath (which was the reason I called realtor - this room needs some work and I want to be smart about it), and making the room bigger/nicer would not be a bad idea, as long as we don’t go overboard. She directed me to Home Depot, where I guess they will work with you on room design for free.
Now I just need to work on getting my husband to part with some bucks - wish me luck.
@1214mom I have house ideas DH is not ‘keen’ on. But I am the budget-er and financial person. I keep up with the housing market. DH probably will come on board with some of it, or just let me do all the ‘heavy lifting’ when it comes to planning and executing.
Will get some funds out of savings before the end of the year (keeping under the tax threshold for higher income tax) so I can start the process next year. I think once things are rolling along, he will be better about it all. First I am getting a ‘she shed’ - actually nice, big - DH was against it until a good friend of his had a lesser shed to de-clutter the house, and now DH thinks the idea may be OK. I also use the comments “I don’t want to buy things twice” - so if the kids or we need something out of the house now but can use it later - I would rather use what we have than re-purchase. DDs bought their own new set of pots/pans, but I have my moms which are like mine. Well a niece/nephew may want - or I can donate. That is an example of something I am storing/hanging on to for now. I have a lot of things to donate, but it takes time to go through it - so once the shed is built, only things that make the cut go in there. That will clear out our garage. Then I can start moving stuff from the house out. We still have some of DD1 and DD2’s things stored. They both are in smaller apts but will want the stuff in the future.
As I empty closets and have them with more shelving put in, the closets can be tidy. DH is very handy in his work shop, so if I see ideas, either have a place like ‘Closets by Design’ or other such company, or DH can make. We only have one wire shelving with lower clothing rod, and that is in our laundry room. The rest of the closets have real shelves.
Our master bath cabinet needs to be re-made for two sinks (we had plumbed for 2 sinks but put one in and a sit down make up area). I think there is room for a small sit down makeup area along a short wall. Replace faucets, shower door etc to freshen up. We had alder-wood stained cherry cabinet, but plan to use cherry wood with very light finish (to see the wood grain), with granite or other high end counter area. The other two bathrooms need the slight face lift as well.
Want high end counter put in kitchen. Not sure if having the cherry kitchen cabinets refinished or just really shined up after thorough cleaning. Still mad that I should have had the cabinet shop hand finish - they sprayed the finish on too thick and can’t see the nice wood grain (my dad owned a construction company/cabinet shop in another state, and I just assumed these guys could do what my dad’s skilled guys could do).
Our area is constantly having new construction, so our home location, beautiful lot, and many features with a freshening look will be good once we are ready to sell.
Don’t waste resources and space on a makeup sit down area in the bathroom. It a thing that dates the bathroom. No one puts them in anymore. Better put in a built in cooler to store wine and/or perishable cosmetics.
Wine cooler in the bathroom? And perishable cosmetics? I really am living on another continent!
Your face creams and makeup really need to be stored at below the so called “room temperature.” Oxidation is a chemical reaction that accelerates with rising temperature. It is as simple as that. Want to preserve those antioxidants in your beauty products? Store them chilled. Or keep throwing them out quickly because they lose potency. So a mini cooler that works for wine storage is good to store cosmetics, too. Peltier-type chillers work for this purpose just fine because you don’t need to freeze anything.
What I am saying is: if one has space for a “makeup sit down counter,” that space should not be wasted on this outdated feature. Put to a better, more modern use. If you don’t have that space, well… as my sister likes to say, “what are you going to do - give birth to it?”
I was excited to have two sinks, lol.
Anti-oxidants in my beauty products? I’m still a fan of soap and water. Agree that sit down counter for make up is not necessary in a bathroom.
