The Home Improvement Thread

We just did redid a master bath. There are literally a million options ;).

I tend to like bright and light for bathrooms so we went with a pale blue for the walls, marble hues flooring and grey cabinets.

Houzz is a great website to browse for inspiration.

@momofsenior1 Thanks for the website! That place is great! I’m leaning towards a white marble floor but am still undecided as for the paint of the bathroom. I was thinking white but then everything about the bathroom would be white. If I had extra time and money, I’d also want to redo the master bedroom.

Just be sure that your bathroom floor isn’t too slippery. My bathroom is white subway tiles and a mostly white mosaic tile on the floor, with a small sea-green glass border. I painted the walls a periwinkle blue and that bathroom makes me so happy. But I’m not a big fan of the current fad for all white and gray bathrooms and kitchens.

@mathmom I believe we would install bathroom rugs to make the floors less slippery.

Picking tile for a shower is stressful. I wish I was good at home decorating stuff, but I am not. I have a designer helping, but when I brought home the combination we worked out, 3 of us in the house really like the main tile but don’t like the accent or whatever it’s called (it will be on the backs on the niche(s) and possibly a 4 or so inch section to break up the dominant tile all the way around.
I dragged my husband to the title shop today, and we found something we like, so hopefully the designer will think it’s ok too, and the sizing will work.
Already did the vanity area, which is outside of the part of the bathroom with the door, but now that I’ve decided to do the shower, I wish I’d done it all at once.
Sorry about the long post - I guess I just need to vent a little.

Thanks @1214mom . I’ll take that into consideration and try doing the whole bathroom at once instead of dividing it and doing one part each at a different time.

@1214mom - I hated picking tile for the bathroom. There were just too many options that I liked. In the end we kept it simple and in keeping with the age of our home. I varied the shapes and sizes but kept the material the same for the shower. We have a large hexagon shape on the floor, a small hex in the niche, and elongated subway tiles on the wall. I hope your project comes together!

Our stucco company is finally getting started on Tuesday. When they called Friday it looked like the whole week was going to be dry. Now the forecast is calling for thunderstorms all week. Fingers crossed they can actually get it completely.

Thanks @momofsenior1 - if we don’t find an accent we really like soon I may do something similar to what you did. I’m pretty sure we are going with flat pebbles for the floor, and we like that. So to do the niche with diagonal cuts or something could work fine for us. I want something very neutral, and designers aren’t always great at neutral.

@MoonKnight , I am confused, you are talking about marble showers, but I could have sworn from context of other posts that you are a student about to leave home for university? Did I confuse you with someone else?

@somemom No, you aren’t confusing me with someone else. Thought that I could get some good ideas here for after I graduate from university. I know it’s a little early but I have all of summer in my hands to plan things out for the future.

@moonknight so, you are a traditional student, about 18 years old, just finished HS and off to university soon? Your comment sounded like a 40 year old Mom

@somemom Sorry for the confusion. You might be wondering why I’m asking this so I’ll try to explain. I was reading a book recently that talked about the principle of things being created twice. There’s the first creation of a plan and the second creation of doing said plan like creating the blueprint of a house and actually building it. I was thinking why should I plan a renovation at a time when I would need it to be done as soon as possible and when I could also be busy with lots of other responsibilities. I thought it would be better when I can plan it now when I have lots of free time and just make tweaks to the plan as I go along. I found that with a lot of plans it is a whole lot easier just making changes compared to starting from scratch. Hope this gives a good enough of an explanation.

@MoonKnight you do understand that products for renovations do change over time. You are starting college, right? Plan all you want, but you may find that by the time you actually own a house and can do any renovations, the products you choose in 2019 might not be available. OR better ones might be.

Maybe figure out your dorm room needs…

@thumper1 That’s a good idea. I think I’ll create a list today.

The stucco guys arrived this morning. There is a huge crew. They are hoping to have it done in 2 - 3 days. Fingers and toes crossed!!!

@MoonKnight you will probably find that your ideas and tastes change as the years pass, and in five+ years you will look at any plans you made now and wonder what you were thinking.

Plus, choice of materials, colors, and textures is often (at least partially) driven by the space. So unless you know the exact space you will be renovating years down the road, keep in mind any plans you make now will likely not be too useful.

Local regs for permit approvals can also change.

Our renovation is done! Well, pretty much done. The bathroom was done back in April I think it was? The floors were finished a few weeks after that. The kitchen was just finished last week. Oh, and somewhere in there we had everything painted as well. (Yikes, this got so long I broke it up in to two posts)

Guest bathroom was gutted and redone in the same configuration, so we just replaced and updated everything, no moving plumbing or anything drastic. I love it and am trying so hard to keep it nice and clean for guests. D21 and S23 share that bathroom so the counters tend to get cluttered quickly. I tried to get rid of a bunch of junk so that they each have three drawers to themselves now which seems to have helped!

We replaced two rooms worth of cherry wood floors (the ones that got ruined in the water leak that started this whole renovation) and several rooms of off white, textured tile floors with a medium brown colored wood look porcelain floor. I was so worried that we would not like them once they were in but so far we love them. They are a little more rustic look than I might have picked but DH loved them so I went with it. They are easy to take care of, I can drag things around on them without worrying about scratching them and I can’t see the dog’s hair on them as much as I used to on the old floors so that is good.

The kitchen was gutted and redone in the same configuration once again so I wouldn’t have to move plumbing or anything major. We do not have an island and so many people thought we should kick down some outer cabinets and change to an open concept with an island but we decided against it. One, it was too expensive. Two, it already is open concept enough for us, we like to have some delineation between the kitchen and family room so I don’t have to see my dirty dishes all the time. It’s hard to explain but the kitchen/eating area/family room are open to each other just not as open as some houses are today.

We replaced oak, 80’s/90’s style cabinets with white shaker cabinets (loving the soft close feature!!), simple white subway tile backsplash and quartz counters called Pompeii Eclipse. For the counters we had them do the mitered edge to make it 3 inches think instead of the normal 3 cm. The contractor thought I was crazy because it costs much more and took 2-3 weeks longer than a normal counter but we are SO happy we did it, it is so pretty. I got a huge 36 inch one bowl undermount sink. I wanted one of the industrial style faucets but they were so tall (22-23 inches) and looked way too big and out of place for our kitchen. It took me a while but I found one that was only 18 inches and it looks great.

Love your choice of quartz!

Part two…

Last thing we did was replace the wet bar that had matched the kitchen. We changed two things there - on the bottom we replaced a wine rack with a cabinet and up top where there used to be a mirrored backsplash and three glass shelves we added a glass cabinet to each side with a box with an X shaped insert under each one that is a wine holder.

I had a hard time deciding what to do with the backsplash there. I wanted something more fun than the plain white subway tiles so started looking at fun tiles. Then my friend reminded me I had always wanted wallpaper somewhere in the house. I remembered DH had found a company a few years ago and we knew someday we wanted to try them - they make wallpaper form any nautical chart or topographical chart you pick. I played around with a few of our favorite places to see what would look good (it is kind of a weird shape with the cabinets, like an upside down T so the chart had to be pretty right in the middle and at the bottom) I decided to surprise DH with it for Father’s Day and picked a chart from our favorite spot in Maine. It is not up yet but I unrolled bit of it and it looks so pretty- can’t wait to find someone to hang it!

So, only three things left to go. The bar faucet is leaking and they don’t sell parts so I had to order a new one. The range hood came with a dent so that was reordered as well. Then last I have to find someone who is really good at hanging wallpaper!

The process was longer than I expected but the family didn’t complain too much. The hardest part was not having a sink in the kitchen so if we even wanted to duo out a glass of water we had to run to the bathroom. Second hardest part was not having a dishwasher for so long, doing dishes in the bathroom got old quickly! Of course with all of this being done now I want to keep going an update the rest of the house. Unfortunately our first college tuition bill is due in August so I think it will be a while before we do much else!
