The Home Improvement Thread

We bought the old rug (along with several furniture pieces) in 1983 when John M. Smyth closed their Michigan Avenue store in Chicago. It lived in our dining room in the city, bedroom in the suburbs, living room here in San Diego, and now the bedroom again. It’s faded and worn but husband loves it and won’t give it up. In that, the rug and I are alike .

Most definitely! Is it any wonder that the unanimous feline decision was the lightest color? Every time I walked through the room another one (of the 4) was sitting on it!

The carpet installers are at our “new” house today. Yesterday they pulled everything up, repaired some subfloor, and laid the new carpet out. I love Berber carpet and always wanted it. This is what we picked:

I really hope everything goes together. Carpet is only on the main floor, hardwood is upstairs and we will use area rugs. We have two rooms that are paneled and the others are newly painted. We did have them paint first, then when the carpet was pulled out, the painters touched up the baseboards as the new carpet didn’t have as deep of a pile. I wanted everything to be tranquil and serene so after consulting with Etsy for some color palettes, we settled on Benjamin Moore "Quiet Moments"https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/1563/quiet-moments and "White Heron"https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-57/white-heron.

When we were first married, Thomas Moser, the furniture maker, always sent a catalogue and it was way beyond our price point but I always dreamed of having some of his pieces. We did order some of the “Ellipse” chairs, a table and an ottoman. Those won’t arrive until March so I will probably have to order some furniture that is a bit quicker to deliver. All of this is a huge step up from our current decor, best described as “relative’s attic” and “neighbor’s estate sale”.

PSA: Might be time to re-post this for those debating which sofa/carpet/chair/blanket color to choose:

I have a yellow Labrador and a black Labrador. Upholstery suggestions are welcome.

Beautiful!

The carpet that I’m having trouble with sits on top of a textured pad, which sits on top of wall-to-wall carpet. Hardwood is underneath all these layers. I’m sure the hardwood would need to be finished if we pulled it up, but the floors would be terribly noisy. H wants to keep the w2w, both for the sound muffling and for keeping his feet warm. I agree – but I got the area rug to tie together the newly painted walls and to cover pet stains and 30 years of wear on white carpet. (What were the previous owners thinking?!?) If it were me making the decision, I would have pulled the w2w and replaced it with a different color, and spent the $$ for really good padding/sound blockage.

Today I hung brackets and put up a heavy curtain rod in my craft room/office so I can hang some of my plants, leaving me more tabletop space for my sewing and computer stuff. Tomorrow I have shelves to install (for crafty stuff and plants) and after Yom Kippur, I’ll set up the wire shelf rack for (you guessed it) more plants and storage. Also need to set up the grow lights. H is not crazy about my plants, so most of them now will be in my craft room.

After that – need to finish the guest room now that S2 and DIL have left. I didn’t like the tan paint I chose, so will redo that. Also going to paint a nightstand and dresser. Nightstand needs to be citri-stripped and sanded so the drawers will close (painting it caused the wood to swell) before I try to paint again.

My beagle sheds in many colors. We bought sofa covers to catch the worst of it, then throw them in the wash. The sofa’s almost 40 years old, so a cover is actually an improvement!

Another advantage of having a standard poodle. No shedding at all.

Your sewing room sounds like your sanctuary! I applaud you for making it your happy spot.

I saw this pic on a realty listing today and it made me think of this thread and the mix of carpet/hardwood. Especially in an open concept space, this could make both the carpet and the hardwood lovers happy.

Our last home had that - hardwood foyer, hardwoods in the kitchen and halls, but carpet in the great room. We would have loved hardwoods throughout but it wasn’t in our budget.

I like that entry door color! Looks great with the gold hardware.

Funny, cause that just happens to be very near the color of my front door!

When we built our home in 1992, I was concerned about getting nice area rugs (and the cost) along with hardwood flooring throughout lower level (except for the bedroom - we like carpet in the bedrooms). After that time, nicer and reasonable rugs have been available, along with the explosion of Internet shopping. The carpeting we have in most of our rooms actually costs out as much as wood flooring. We had our family room done under insurance (small water damage in the corner) in 2013, and now we had a roof issue (hail hit near the bathroom vent pipe, and water ran along down the wall, pooling in the formal dining room) so we are getting wood flooring in our living room and dining room (they have continuous flooring, so insurance is paying for replacement) - we pay the extra cost with installation (wood floor costs more to install than carpeting). So getting a lot refreshed in the home; it has been a pain. Insurance claim 5-18; roof is finally done last week (getting certificate of completion today to obtain the insurance payment for depreciation). The contractor would not start on interior until roof was done (understandable), but the ball is now rolling and almost at the finish line. What an ordeal. Insurance claims have gotten a bit ‘more’, but part of it was the initial assessment should have bumped us up to major claim status – and that was eventually done. Appreciative that we have USAA insurance, and they have been paying out fine. Also glad we had worked with this local contractor before (in 2013), and we had the same estimator.

We actually had a second insurance claim in the same general area (in April a plumber used a motorized long snake and had ‘operator error’ - running the snake head close to the top of the pipe and knocked a quarter sized hole in the pipe - unaware of what he did!) - we noticed swelling in the vanity cabinet (water from the wall behind it - we don’t use that sink with much water flowing, but it all was going into the wall from the hole in the pipe). So 2nd insurance claim, $1,000 deductible (which we plan to get back from the plumber’s insurance after USAA goes after it or we go after it in Small Claims Court to get our $1,000 back). First insurance claim is with the roof and damage, $2,000 deductible. We are very fortunate - we paid for endorsement for IBHS Fortified Roof - so we are getting a better roof. Plus it turns out when the Gutter Guard people put new gutters on in 2020, they left exposed fascia wood. Replacing the fascia and vinyl product around the house was over $8,000 - but USAA also paid that as they needed the solid fascia for the IBHS roof. Whew!

Other comments in this thread or another had me thinking about limiting some of the remodeling/upgrading of our home. Will detail more later when I have time.

Since we are talking about hardwood/rugs/carpet I’ll ask a question.

I’m redoing our large year-around sunporch. Last year we installed new herringbone flooring over the concrete. The previous owners left an expensive 6 piece set of wicker furniture which I FINALLY found new cushions for that won’t break the bank (literally could have spend hundreds of $ per cushion!). I also ordered a new wool rug.

Normally I usually put a rug pad underneath all my area rugs. Gives a little thickness if not already thick and I feel like it adds life to the rug wear.

Do you all use rug pads underneath your area rugs? (not runners). I usually get a 1/4 inch thick one.

Get a Chom chom. Look on Amazon. Your fabric choice won’t be as big an issue.

@abasket we don’t use pads under our rugs.

Yes, I have pads under all my rugs, including the sunporch.

Mine too. And a couple of weeks after we painted ours, our next door neighbors painted theirs almost exactly the same color too.

I have colored door/door obsession. A front door is the easiest spot to make an impression on your home!

D has an instagram devoted to doors. She sees a lot of gorgeous entrances in DC. Ours isn’t too exciting - a dark green but I love it.

Finally in the home stretch. Moving scheduled for next week. D was here over the weekend to sort through things so I have quite a bit to donate. It’s funny but what I would have kept of hers is what she said to donate!
