Properly set tile is hard to break. Sounds like some installer made a few shortcuts!
We have oak flooring on our main floor - living, dining, kitchen, laundry, and powder room. No real problems until our instant hot water dispenser decided to give up the ghost in the last month. What I thought was a minor leak, wasn’t. Not huge, but it did make the bottom of the cabinet pretty damp. H replaced it today and will be getting a mat with a raised edge to go on the bottom of said cabinet. We have one under the washer as a just-in-case, but never a problem there.
Yes, wood floor in powder room. No issues, even tho they got wet a few times (pretty quickly mopped up each time)
We have tile in our mudroom, entry hall and powder room which are all adjacent to each other. We live in the woods, sort of, and there is lots of sand and dirt that just comes in. Wood in our entry hall and mudroom would have been like having sandpaper rubbed on it daily. And since the bathroom isn’t connected to where the wood floors are, it’s tile too.
The rest of our main floor is red oak, including our kitchen. So far…knock on wood, no problems.
Nice pun, @thumper1 .
We live in a 2 story cape style house. The main floor was a mish-mash of sheet flooring, nasty old wall to wall carpets, and a narrow board oak dining room floor that really showed its age.
We made the entire first floor (dining room, living room, hallway, kitchen, bedroom) all the same, 5-inch red oak flooring. We hesitated about wood in the kitchen but:
–we know several folks with oak kitchen flooring
–we no longer have dogs or kids in the house
–we couldn’t decide at all on any kitchen flooring options that would mesh with the oak flooring in the adjacent dining room.
The wide boards look fantastic and it’s nice having all the flooring on the main floor to be at the same level.
Next: find a house painter!
Beautiful! I love that tile in the bathroom. Is this a showroom or your personal oasis?1
I wish it was mine. This is the corporate showroom in Kohler, WI. They had 20 fully designed bathrooms on one floor, their history museum on another floor, and a third floor with smaller displays. It was very inspirational.
We have a Kohler showroom nearby but it pales in comparison with what is pictured above! Beautiful. Although I’m not digging the vessel sinks. ![]()
We are working to finish out the west half of our cabin’s lower level into two spaces—a bedroom (foreground) and a laundry room beyond that. Last season, we demo’d that area and installed flooring and paneling in the bedroom space:
Since we returned this season, DH has built the bunk beds:
He will tackle the space directly to the right of the beds as a built-in office/workspace. The wall to the left of the beds and the back wall will be finished out as separate cabinetry projects but probably not completed until next year. When finished, the cabin will have four bedrooms, this one in anticipation of “smaller” guests.
@ChoatieMom : Your projects are always amazing.
I’m excited because I just got a second quote on getting six pillars removed and it was less than half the price of my first quote.
You are so lucky to have a husband who can build- it looks fantastic!
CC slumber party at @ChoatieMom house!!

@ChoatieMom : Will there be a ladder to get to the top bunk??
Yes, there will be a ladder and a safety rail on the top bunk, but those are low on the priority list as the rest of the room has to be finished before any guests occupy it and, frankly, we expect this room to be mostly decorative/office use as we have two other guest bedrooms and no children in the family.
Always nice to have a lower price option for the work.
I thought having tree removal was a lot, but it was half of what our neighbor spent, so it was something acceptable.
Is a Subzero fridge worth the unbelievably high price? We’re nowhere near needing a new fridge, but I’ve got time on my hands.
I’ll be curious to hear opinions on this! The last two kitchens we’ve done I haven’t been able to bite the bullet on a Subzero because of the cost. I have splurged on a Wolf range twice because it out performs every other range I’ve ever had but to keep stuff cold? I just couldn’t do it. I also don’t love how small the interior is on the Subzeros. I have a cabinet depth, non built in that sticks out just a bit but that doesn’t bother me at all. That said, I’m not happy with this fridge either and I don’t think it’s going to last all that much longer. I have the space to do a subzero because I have smaller spare upper cabinets in my basement that were misordered when we first did the kitchen so I could install one with minimal fuss but I don’t know if it’s worth it.
