The Home Improvement Thread

I was going to go piecemeal, getting Miele ovens and dishwasher and supplementing by other brands (KitchenAid cooktop and a generic hood) , but Miele had a 10% rebate offer, so that made our decision easier. We bought two ovens, a cooktop, warming drawer, dishwasher, and over island hood. Then we replaced every 18-20 year old rusted appliance and pulled the newest dishwasher out and gave it to the kids. It was a couple orders of magnitude better than the plastic junk they had in their house.

We went piecemeal. We bought a Wolf range, Bosch dishwasher and fridge, a Broan hood, and a GE microwave. If I had an unlimited budget, I would have gotten a Subzero fridge and a Wolf hood. I was tempted to do a Bosch package but after cooking on a Wolf stove for the past 10 years, I couldn’t go back.

I was going to post that our appliances arrived today and our fridge was wrong :(. The delivery guys wouldn’t take it back with them but once I got through to my sales person, he was very apologetic (he mis-ordered) and they are switching them out next week. They are also eating the price difference so I can’t be too upset but it did give me a small heart attack when it arrived. (Was supposed to be counter depth and was not…at all!).

We went with all (refrigerator, microwave/oven, range, dishwasher) one brand (Jenn-Air). We liked a different range a little better (I can’t remember now what it was), but we ended up getting the dishwasher free on some sort of promotion if we went with all the same brand.

Last year when we got new kitchen appliances we got all LG products: oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave.

We did mostly Jenn-Air because of the free appliance promotion - free-standing dual-fuel range, built-in microwave/convection second oven, counter-depth French door fridge, and last year’s model dishwasher which was on sale but they let us apply for the rebate. It’s not quite as quiet as the latest (46 db vs. 42 db) but was half the price.

Got a NewAir wine fridge because the Jenn-Air one is $2000 (!), and a Zephyr hood because the Jenn-Air hood was also $2000.

Interesting thing about the counter-depth fridge (and most other counter-depth fridges, I believe) - it’s not truly counter depth. The doors need to stick out because of the way the hinges work, and the depth not counting the doors is 24.5". In addition, you need at least 1" behind it for proper ventilation. That’s 25.5", which means that if you don’t accommodate that somehow with cabinets, you will see at least 1.5" of the side of the fridge sticking out, since cabinets are 24" deep. There’s tons of complaints on the internet about this from people who expected counter depth to actually mean, well, counter depth.

We are using a side panel and pulling one column of cabinets forward 2" in order to hide the sides.

At the store we went to, true counter depth fridges are called ā€œintegrated counter depthā€ and were stupidly expensive.

Don’t forget the counter itself often hangs another inch past the cabinet depth. That helps the visuals for a ā€œcounter depthā€ a bit. I just can’t handle how so many refirgerators stick out 5 or 6 inches.

Btw, you can often carve a space out of the wall behind the fridge, re-brace the 2x4s, in order to push the refrig back another inch or two.

In house1, we had that fridge box to accommodate the 1-2 extra inches. And you can’t have it too close to the wall anyway because the water line had to run somewhere. It actually looked fine. Could have put a true built in there but did not want to spend $$$$. House2 came with a double-wide Subzero. When it dies, I will cry a river. It is that good. A replacement was $10k at the store. I pointed to the price tag and told Mr. to baby our fridge.

You have to be a little careful when you do this to make sure the space is big enough to allow proper ventilation. If it fits too tightly in that space it can cause the fridge to have to work too hard because the heat can’t dissipate.

I am a stickler about the frig sticking out. I drive everyone crazy during the install. If there isn’t any filler to the left and the right of the frig you have to be careful how the doors are going to open wide enough. So, a trick is to have the countertop installer cut the adjoining countertop (which is sticking out 26ā€ ) cut the end hanging over the 24ā€ cabinet with a diagonal cut.

I am constantly making everyone put in recessed outlet boxes, recessed ice maker connections, etc. still end up with some of the side of the frig hanging out!!

NRE, ime, with wall board and the width of the 2x4s, that wall cavity offers more than 1-2". It depends on what’s back there. And yes, I was thinking ventillation, you don’t install it flush to the back wall. But in this case, it’s about a counter depth or something close, not the ones that stick out so much more.

I didn’t frame/use filler for ours. I wanted the floorspace, not the boxed in appearance. And the water line on mine is atached and doesn’t protrude more than about an inch.

Anyway, not spending 10k on any fridge. My issue will be, with gas now running to the house, I want a gas stove. Not spending oodles on that, either. But what I would treasure is a refurbished old hob type, 30". Lol, maybe. But no brain cells to go looking now.

I have a paint question. What finish (level of sheen–not sure of the correct terminology) did you use in your common spaces? Not the bathrooms or kitchen but hallways, family room, stairwell, etc. We are empty nesters so it’s not like we have toddlers smearing things on the walls but we aren’t necessarily the most careful either. Don’t love shiny but concerned that flat could get too dirty.

I use eggshell.

We have matte. I wouldn’t have chosen it but our painter likes it best because you can do touch-ups without going all the way to the corner. I feel like the color looks deeper and richer when there is no sheen.

Eggshell here, too.

Flat ceilings, eggshell walls, semigloss trim.

I prefer matte or the least shiny surface a mfr makes. Old plaster walls show every imperfection. I’ve never had an issue spot washing flat and Ilike the texture.

@NerdMom88
We researched appliances but we also strove for a consistent look. We replaced everything except the wall ovens which we will likely replace soon.

Miele Dishwasher: I don’t recommend. This has been a big disappointment, especially given the price. I love the top row cutelry rack but I don’t love how it cleans. In hindsight, I’d go with the Kitchen Aid.

Wolf Rangetop: This is my favorite appliance and I wholeheartedly recommend Wolf. It’s a dream to use and the quality is outstanding.

Viking Wall Ovens: I don’t recommend. The temperature is so unreliable we had to put a clip-on thermometer inside the oven. Viking has one of the worst repair records in the industry. For the price, I’d recommend Wolf or Thermador.

Sub Zero Fridge: I have no complaints about the fridge and I love that they last 30+ years.

Happy shopping!

flat ceiling, eggshell most walls, semigloss trim. I like flat - I think it’s in our bedroom.

We remodeled the kitchen a few years ago. Replaced the Sub Zero (was close to 30 years old when it failed, @GoldPenn) with the newer same-size model with panels to match the new kitchen. Bosch panel front dishwasher that I love, KitchenAide panel front warming drawer. (I like the hidden look with kitchen appliances.)

After a lot of research, we didn’t go high-end with the oven. Bought a Whirlpool Gold-Series with convection and steam. The look fits with the kitchen and it works very well.

We kept the Dacor electric cooktop and downdraft system that now needs replacing. Just bought a Wolf induction cooktop and downdraft that luckily fits in the existing granite countertop cutout. (Gas isn’t a cost-effective option for us.)

The new doors are here and will be installed in two weeks fingers crossed. I am tired of keeping the windows in our bedroom closed to prevent the cats from escaping because they can easily open the bedroom doors. That or barricading the doors. Need to take a few ā€œbeforeā€ photos before the guys take the old ugliness out.
