The Home Improvement Thread

NRE, remember that judges and jurors have kitchens…

The door folks called us and apologized for the mishap with the measurements. They are trying to expedite the reorder. Of course they want to get paid for that door! The measurements were emailed to the manufacturer who somehow messed up. The cats meanwhile had a field day in the closet.

And why is the fan over the dishwasher?

And this bathroom:

What the heck are those little buckets? Are they what I think they are? Yeesh!

Wow!!! That is one uuggglyy toilet! And the buckets. Yikes.

Well I can’t tell you what the little buckets are. We have a toilet just like that at a house on the Cape - it probably dates back to the 1930s. The fan is an easy answer. That’s where the stove used to be. The original kitchen probably did not have a dishwasher.

@notrichenough - The company said very rarely they have had issues but there is a solvent they use to loosen up whatever they use to adhere the counter and it could potentially damage the finish of the cabinets which are painted maple. We’ve had so much go wrong this month that it was our decision not to take the risk. I really, really need this project to be done!

That fan is also an outside wall. By the stove, there may have been no ceiling space to run a vent, beams in the way. As for the little buckets, someone went nuts at IKEA.

My question for you savvy gas users: do I need a service contract on the new gas boiler? The plumber and the gas tech who was here say no. They feel a gas boiler is highly reliable. Any thoughts? Wait out the warranty?

No. I can’t imagine a reason for a service contract on a new boiler, or an old one for that matter. I’ve had gas boilers for about 30 years, in three separate houses, and my service costs have been minimal.

Ditto. It will croak when it’s time for it to croak. A service contract is not going to help with that!

Sherpa - which brand did you install at your new place?

@BunsenBurner - We went with a heat pump but there’s a boiler in the auxiliary building. Speaking of which, that building is incredible. The prior owners must have poured a ton of money into it before losing it to the bank. 2400 sf of garage and shop with boiler fired heated floors! And an apartment above, also heated by the boiler.

Back in Utah our last two homes both had infloor heat too. In my opinion it’s the only way to go in cold climates.

That kitchen linked above is hilarious. Obviously it needs a serious remodel. But instead they stuck in a brand new stainless dishwasher that just does not go with the rest of the kitchen.

Am I seeing correctly? That toilet has a pink seat under the top?

Hey, we still have a functional 1966 six-gallon blue toilet (and matching shower!).

Thanks. The oil company had excellent emergency service and believe me, over the years we needed it 3-4x on an oil boiler that was now 45 years old. Usually in the middle of the night in a wicked cold spell. And each of those calls was more than one visit. Plus annual cleaning and preventative maintenance.

My plumber won’t do 24 hr service. You can see why I wonder.

Otoh, $300+/year for a contract x 25 years, I could have self financed, eh? Not sure if my warranty is 5 or 10 years.

Contract folks will not do it 24/7 either.

@sherpa - we have been told that fire tube Lochinvar is the boiler to go with. Is that what you have? Our current one is NTI, the service guy was not a fan of the brand. It probably has a couple more years left in it, so wondering about a potential replacement options. The house has a hydroair system (the same boiler works to heat the hot water and to provide heat; the blower then sends warm air through the ductwork). It seems to be a fairly efficient system. Only paid $22 for gas (our hot water usage) this past month.

Yes, the oil co does 24/365 on gas.

@BunsenBurner - Ours is a Buderus, which is made by Bosch. It works fine.

Thanks @sherpa!

We have a Buderus gas boiler (G124 with the fancy Logomatic controller maybe? I forget exactly), which powers the FHW baseboard and heats the hot water in the indirect water heater. It’s 17 years old and has had very few problems. It’s mostly been peripheral parts like the automatic damper motor, which has nothing to do with the boiler.

Good to know! Thanks.

Can anyone comment on the foam insulation that can be used in crawl spaces?
