I got into Cornell Arts & Sciences with a fairly mediocre 1330 on my SATs (620 verbal/710 math), neither of my parents finished college, and I wasn’t in too many activities (but I was actively involved in the ones I did participate in). Those were my weaknesses.

However, I got a 700 on the SAT Math II, a 770 on the writing, and a 790 on the US History exam. Also, I took 6 APs and had no scores lower than 4. And I had a better topic for my admissions essay than the cliched “I learned about poverty while on vacation to Mexico”…

So you can have relative weaknesses on half of your profile, as long as the other half is strong.

I think it all depends on the admission officer as an individual, to a degree.

That, or your application magically goes up in flames before they have a chance to read it : P

I thought I read somewhere that Cornell doesn’t really weigh in the writing section too much on the new SAT. Am I making that up or is it true?
