The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

dstark, you were going for “psychopathy” not “psychosis”. As a rule, medical terms are very precise, and it generally pays to be careful before you use terms you don’t readily understand.

I wasn’t talking in the clinical sense.

I am sorry if I offended anybody.
Psychopath sounds right, but I don’t want to be held to that.

Just for the record, a close family member was suicidal. He just went through electric shock therapy. Might have worked though too early too tell.

One of my best friends was recently suicidal. He is under care and the drugs he is taking are working.

I can go on, but I don’t want to do that.

So BCEagle91, watch your assumptions. I might have misspoke, but I wasn’t intentionally trying to make light of people with serious conditions. You don’t know me.

Television is one of the biggest problems in it’s use of the term “psychotic killer” when psychosis for the reason for killing others is rare.

I didn’t make any assumptions. I just posted facts.

You misspoke. When corrected, you doubled down instead of looking up the terms that you used to verify whether or not you made an error.

I know what you wrote. And that’s what I responded to.

Dstark, so whenever a retail investor places a limit px sell order based on the order book, all the quotes are legitimate? There is no possibility that as soon as he/she pushes the submit button there is no bogus bid order that comes up influencing other bid orders to go down so essentially the sell order never get executed unless you cancel and replace it with a lower px? I think this happens but I can’t really tell because I barely blinked my eye when I presume all these tricks occur when I place a buy/sell limit px order based on the current bid/ask quotes on the order book.

Frankly, I think quote stuffing and the like caused the May 2010 flash crash. And I think there are HFTs sniffing stop-loss orders out there to trip it.

That MA construction boom will come to a screeching halt if we fall off the fiscal cliff. MA receives 10% of all NIH funding and all of that research at Harvard, MIT, Tufts, UMass Medical and Boston University is going to be scaled back. I assume that the companies providing services and products and those that convert university research into products and services will suffer as well. Maybe this should go on the parents’ page as it affects parents with kids looking to go into med school or biomedical research.

<a href=“Threat to funds haunts Boston-area labs - The Boston Globe”>Threat to funds haunts Boston-area labs - The Boston Globe;

Krlillies, you’re pretty safe. Just use a limit and hit the damn bid. If a stock has a bid of .25, put an offer in at .23 or .20 depending on volatlity of the issue and the volume of the issue and the depth of the bids and offers. I can’t tell you how to tradr every issue because some issues are very thin. You have to be more careful with those. There are algorthims that will move away from you on these smaller issues. But market makers have always faded. Market makers used to fade away in eighths and quarters and halves. Now it is pennies. That is better for the investor.

Are all the markets on the screen good? No, markets move. Trades are happening quickly. Milliseconds. Some say microsconds. I don’t know
about that. Depends on how the speed of the trade is measured. It takes time for orders to move to exchanges. The brokerage firm you use is extremely fast, but not that fast.

This quote stuffing is not affecting you. It is really one hft firm against
another. Quote stuffing tries to maneuver for positioning in the markets and to get firms to trade when they don’t want to trade. It definitely is going on, because it is profitable and wall street is an amoral place.

Quote stuffing did not cause the flash crash. Trying to sell 5 figures of es
futures when the bid is 500 futures is not going to fly, yet Waddel and Reed tried to do that. Why would you think quote stuffing caused the flash crash?

Do hft firms try to set off stops? Sure. That has been going on well before the existence of hft.

HFT firms are not a monolithic group. There are various strategies and
firms are not doing the same strategies. Otherwise, I would be as
wealthy as Cooperman, and go on tv and complain how I am so mistreated and misunderstood. Lol

One of the largest hft firms was a big buyer the day of the flash crash.
Made size. Maybe the best day they ever had, but I can no longer remember if that is true about whether that was their best day ever. Some hft firms left the market. (the NYSE specialists left the market).
Some hft firms may have been selling.

What has the market done since the flash crash? Pretty well, right? The flash crash is meaningless in the long run. Next time we have a flash crash, and there is no news, buy a little of something you want to own anyway. Maybe there will be news that comes out that a nuclear device went off, so don’t buy too much. :)

“Otherwise, I would be as wealthy as Cooperman, and go on tv and complain how I am so mistreated and misunderstood. Lol”

Cooperman was not complaining about himself but the retail investor. As a matter of fact in the video I posted, he said that he has taken advantage of that trading. Adami argued with him and Cuban basically using your (Dstark) views.

Cooperman has addressed many issues. You can google him.

I have in the past. I know your political views and his do not line up which cannot be discussed here. Most of these guys have his views except maybe Gross. He’s been an active philanthropist.

There you go–they just bot cheap. Accenture for a $1. Whoo!

So, I guess to remember in the future is it safe to say that Madoff was a psychopath while Jack Kerouac was pyschotic?

I have to drop the psychotic talk.

That is what you got out of what I wrote, Krlillies? Ok.

Doct, I wasn’t really addressing Cooperman’s politics but something deeper, but that is ok. I am going to stop the Cooperman talk too.

dstark, no I get what you were saying abt Cooperman. It’s more impt. to me than the psychotic vs psychopath distinction but I mentioned it so I remember in the future just in case someone calls me out on the wrong usage. :)

Lol…yeah…I love being lectured by BCEagle91. ;)

OK - I’ve been poorly trading lately (too emotional) especially with aapl and goog and their large price moves even though I’ve been making money. I bought aapl put spreads and sold calls pretty close to the bottom in aapl price but I did by more ditm calls.

Well I have to go. I already missed parts of FM. I need to hear what happened with Kraft.

HPQ getting killed today.

No news out there that I can see.

krlillies, I should add to my point about the markets on a screen.

In addition to the markets on the screen that we can all see, many times there are hidden bids and offers. Traders don’t want to show their hand. Also, there are dark pools or blind pools where markets are being made. So the real market, the bid and offer, might be better than what is shown on the screen.

HPQ forward earnings were lowered. That is what I heard.

I see that Aapl and Goog are having very good days.

Sell goog at ~766 ?- both times its reached that level, it has sold off hard

On an entirely different note, I would appreciate any good ideas for hedged income strategies. I backtested 90% HYG 10% SPXS on etfrplay for three years and got about 5.5% compounded with about half the volatility of HYG alone (played around with the numbers and that seemed to be about the bes)t. Then using 15% SDS as a proxy for 10%, I got an 19% drawdown during the 2008 crash, but a really quick recovery to only lose 3.5% for the year.

Those numbers strike me as ok in the current environment but not great (again, we’re talking income, not growth). Anyone got any better suggestions?
