The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

That is news to me. Thanks. I will check it out.

There is talk of aapl volatility futures now? I had no idea…

Wow…I would be a loser if I sold aapl volatility yesterday…

Aig is right where I need it to close…

I unloaded my aapl position - I’m out of that stock for this year, except the put I sold. I had to roll out my 12/22 515 put to 1/19 490. Just too many unknowns. This stock really looks broken.

Yeah…I thought the stock had good news with the google map app…

At least enough to keep the stock stable…

You had a good run in aapl…

BestBuy is a great store. I like walking around the store.

I went to a BestBuy the day after Thanksgiving. It was packed. Last week i went again, not so packed.

I like the big retail stores and would hate to see them go away.

[All Hope May Be Lost for Best Buy Shareholders | Breakout - Yahoo! Finance](<a href=“All Hope May Be Lost for Best Buy Shareholders”>All Hope May Be Lost for Best Buy Shareholders)

They are trying harder on service. Went there this week and a helpful salesperson gave me great advice on a product. I was going to get something else which cost as much and which I thought might be awful (not a lot of good choices in this product type) but he recommended the best product for what I wanted as he used it in the same way.

Most of my past experience with Best Buy salesfolks has been pretty poor.

Yeah…I don’t want to trash anybody.

AIG is flirting at 33.98 the last time I checked.

Yeah…right now aig is trading 34 in the after market…

I guess I won’t know until Sunday where I stand…

I was just listening to Cramer who made some interesting points about the public’s obsession with certain stocks: aapl, goog, amzn etc. The point was that although these may make you a lot of money, they are battleground stocks that also entail significant risks and how it is better to also focus on more mundane companies that are fundamentally sound. I find myself obsessing in the way he suggested, going back to what has made me a lot of money in the past such as aapl even if I have not made so much lately instead of broadening my holdings more. Its hard to change and leave the past behind.

It gets easier to forget your big winners if you can find more.

except for the fact that you already know the winners you had, you won’t know the new winners except in the future. Its always easier to look backwards than forwards particularly in a difficult environment.

That’s why I said: “if you can find more”. Part of the challenge is finding more.

I read doct’s posts and I understand and think what he says makes sense.

I think post 3831 is a very good post.

Sometimes BCEagle91 makes sense to me.

Sometimes, BCEagle91 sounds like Will Rogers. I like Will Rogers, I like Will Rogers a lot, but I think he was joking when he said this…

“Don’t gamble; take all your savings and buy some good stock and hold it till it goes up, then sell it. If it don’t go up, don’t buy it”.

[Soaring S.F. office costs fueled by tech - SFGate](<a href=“Soaring S.F. office costs fueled by tech”>Soaring S.F. office costs fueled by tech)

That is one big increase in costs…

“Occupancy costs, which include rents plus local taxes and service charges, surged 36.4 percent in downtown San Francisco, hitting $90 a square foot in the year to Sept. 30, Los Angeles broker CBRE Group said in its semiannual survey of world office markets. That was the biggest jump among 133 areas*globally.”

My son is getting phone calls and emails from recruiters - unsolicited. It looks like tech companies and non-tech companies are starting up projects. He hasn’t been looking as he’s happy where he is. BTW, CS enrollments when he took his first CS course were about 60. This year they’re 400+.

Wow…

Your son is in the right field.

And I guess others are figuring that out.

The enrollments are going up because his school is inexpensive. He had a meeting with his graduate advisers and they told him that their current students are the strongest that they have ever seen. It appears that top students that would normally have gone to full-pay privates are going to inexpensive state u for the price tag.

I’m sure that everyone has had one or more stocks that has performed very well over a period of years or even longer. I’ve certainly had a number of these over the years. Many of them were bought out by other companies. These are stocks that you mostly or completely hold with little to no trading because they have good management, have a fundamentally solid business that is growing and they’re not over-valued. When that changes, then it may be time to get out.

At the moment, I’m in two such companies though I still have more due diligence to do on one of them. I’m doing some short-term trading as well given the issues in the markets right now and things are going well this month.

Sometimes these good companies fall into your lap because you come into contact with them from work, friends, family or you use their product or sometimes it’s a suggestion from a trading buddy that really likes the company fundamentally.

I generally don’t find companies like this through screeners.

Apple sold 2 million iphone 5s in China its first weekend of sale. It’s not even on China’s largest mobile network. Apple is cheap, plain and simple.
