My company is also hiring like crazy even though pc sales have declined. i guess its the smartphones that are doing the trick. My group which had 15 people as of January is hiring 2 to 3 a week. I can’t even keep track of them anymore. In general, we’re looking for optical, mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, software engineers along with physicists.

Why isn’t that a leading indicator that Boeing stock will go down in the future?

Stocks frequently go up when layoffs are announced. The company is reducing costs.

I guess that you engineer a product and then you spend many years making them and making money. So you don’t need as many engineers. In the software engineering work, you have the same issue but you often have newer versions of the software that adds features. Of course a plane is physical - you pay for it and expect many years of service - if they could - so doing huge upgrades is very hard.

A scary cover story in Barron’s…

"WEEK OF APRIL 20
“Dow 16,000!
By JACK WILLOUGHBY
Our latest Big Money poll shows record levels of bullishness among America’s money managers, despite concerns about the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve policy, and Europe’s financial mess.”

For some reason, I can’t open the link to the deflationary article.

Sell in May and go away? I didn’t know you’ll take it to heart.
We need you to post to offer us some guidance.

Krillies, You don’t need my guidance. Some of your buys are better than mine. The other regular posters don’t need my guidance either.

I still may post. I just wanted to mention I may not.

Thanks for the kind words.

I am already posting more than I thought I would. Lol

I think knowledge of stocks & bonds, mutual finds, ETFs, and the like is more important than many things taught in school/college including many of the subjects that had meant a lot to me. So I had put some money in the kids’ accounts when they were young with a hope of getting them to trade on paper if they wished to start with, and with (their) real money. D1 had no desire, so the money stays in some generic Vanguard fund, while S thinks (knows) he’s far better than me and does his thing. Just last year had a talk with D2 whose religion over the last few years has centered around i-anything. When AAPL dropped to just over 500 she made the move - thank heaven there wasn’t enough money to sell Puts, and she’s turning out to be about as competent as I was in this business.

DW was never seriously into money matters, but in recent days had me jump into the yellow metal, and physical at that - have to see how that goes. Do the same rules for short/long term gain/loss apply, and am I responsible for maintaining cost basis by hand?

You are responsible to know your costs. You must have receipts…

Physical gold is not taxed the same as stocks and bonds. Physical gold is taxed like collectibles. I don’t know what the rates are now with the recent tax changes.

I see nothing wrong with young people owning index funds with low fees like Vanguard’s…

Or if young people want to do their own thing, that is cool too. People learn by doing.

I believe that Gold and Silver Eagles are an exception to collectible rules for taxes.

Edit: looks like US Gold, Silver and Platinum coins are exempt from the higher collectibles rates.

I used to trade against this guy. He was very good. I did not like him anywhere near me when we traded because he took some trades I wanted.

He also had sports books and which celebrity was going to die bets going on the floor. He eventually started the world sports exchange with another floor member. His partner was on 60 Minutes.

I guess Steve Schillinger blew his brains out. I don’t know what happened. Too much partying? The fact that his business was illegal in the United States? I thought he was a very nice guy but a little sketchy.

Wow. Suicide is never the right choice.

I bought NVR today on big earnings disappointment. The best is yet to come.

^^I hear that sometimes happens to people who spend too much time trading instead of investing. I spent too much time today trading. I sold an aapl 4/26 350 put = 1.21 to go along with the 4/26 aapl 375 put that I sold last week. Sold 4/26 spy 153 puts = .27, iwm 4/26 87.5 puts. Along with this waste of time, I bought 5/18 spy 145 - 161 call spreads in conjunction with 5/18 155 - 151, 150 puts.

Razorsharp, good luck on nvr.

Doct, you were a busy boy…

So doct, I am netting everything out. Assuming you put on these trades with the same size…you are long the may 155-161 call spread…

Short the 151-145 put spread in may. Short the may 150 puts naked.

You are also short the apr 153 puts which will hopefully expire worthless…and pay a little if your may trades costs…the iwm puts will help pay also…

If the market takes a header, you are going to be pretty long… I guess you feel better about the market this week.

For May, I’m protected to 150 for spy except for the 153 puts that expire in 4 days.

Did that trade cost u anything?

Did u buy the 155-151 put spread more times than the 145-161 call spread?

Sell more 150 puts than the 145-161 call spread?

Anyway, the trade looks pretty good…

The 145 calls did, the rest was roughly 0. I did the same number of contracts for each of those. So far there has been very strong support at 154.

Here are some interesting aapl trades from Dan Nathan: [Webinar: Trading AAPL?s Fiscal Q2 Earnings W/ Options ? Risk Reversal](http://www.riskreversal.com/2013/04/22/webinar-trading-aapls-q2-earnings-w-options/)

Those trades are interesting…

He is trading butterflies. How can I argue?

The last I looked 350 is the line of death. I agree there should be a lot of support down there.

I don’t want to trade that far out, but the 400/500/600 butterfly looks interesting. I doubt I trade aapl before earnings.

I haven’t looked at aapl’s options for awhile.

There have been a lot of articles that are about the flawed research that led to people pushing austerity. Mathematically austerity in this economic climate was always bs.

Anyway, Bill Gross and others are talking about austerity. There are so many links.
I just chose this one for no reason.
