The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

I want to work full time until October 2014 then part time for a year and a half. My wife still has 4 years or so before she can retire with a pension. This is the situation unless we get that 10% correction and I time it right. If that happens, I’m gone. I’ve got some big expenses that I want to work through like unloading 2 of my houses to eliminate property taxes and insurance. Also I want to take a few expensive trips before my income drops and I get too old to experience challenging trips.

I looked in some other places for jobs. Probably looked through 2,000 postings for a wide variety of jobs. Found several more targets and many that don’t require a Bachelors though most did. I’m leaning towards our daughter just getting any job for the summer and then getting her BS. If she wants to stick with the job, then that’s okay or do a little of both. She is going to get a phone call in the morning to schedule another interview (in-person I think). It’s for a two-month contract job.

I think that anyone looking for work is impatient to start out with as they want to pay the bills or get moving with their lives. Skills get moldy and the longer you have a hole in your resume, the more prospective employees wonder what is wrong with you?

Statistically, the middle-aged people are doing much better than young adults in finding jobs. Everyone out there wants experience and you’re more likely to have experience as an older job-hunter.

I had my daughter install VirtualBox and then Windows 7 in a VM on her desktop. I asked her to install Ubuntu as well. A couple of line items for her resume - useful for applying for helpdesk jobs. I’m taking her to the office this Sunday to show her how to do network printer setups on a few operating systems. I’ll keep up with various areas of tech training and try to knock off the popular things that companies are looking for that don’t cost me any $$$. Getting a hold of some of the Microsoft Server products for free is a little hard.

BTW, FBARs are due this weekend for any affected.

I don’t know if I’ll be allowed to work part time because my company is inundated with work and even with our hiring like crazy, we still can’t get the work done.

“As parents, we have to have some patience.”

As parents, its sometimes difficult to have this type of patience especially if you’ve spent a small fortune on college. When I couldn’t find a job, my mother would tell me stories that she would tell people that I had a physics degree and they just shook their heads. Needless to say, it didn’t make me feel particularly happy with how I spent my college years.

Doct, I like most of your plan.

What happens if you time things right this time, retire, and later, lose?

I know so many people that have said if I just have one more score… And what if you lose this time? If the bond market really crashed… The stock market would crash too. At least temporarily. I say this because the bond market probably has more risk in it than the stick market. And I am not saying the bond market is going to crash. Probably wont, but a crash is not a zero possibility.

Patience is very hard. I think I am getting better at it as I get older.
I watch both the young and the middle aged people struggle. Maybe the middle aged people have things easier than the young. I think things stink for both groups.

It took my oldest daughter a few months to get a job after college and she was a financial math major. One of the more difficult majors. She did get a job. It took Her boy friend 9 months to get a job and he is very bright.

The economy is better now, but I was just talking to my kids today about the job issue and they said most of their friends have jobs (they are college graduates), but they are underemployed and not doing what they want. I have stories about people in their 50s too. There are still more job seekers than openings. Just anecdotes.

The last statistics that I saw on the number of job seekers per opening confirmed this. Yes, there are multiple of job seekers per opening. There are a lot of discouraged workers too and these are not counted. If unemployment goes down, they come back around looking for work. This is why unemployment ticked up one point last month - people saw the headline unemployment rate go down so they thought that hiring improved and went back to looking for work.

I found a job posting that would be fun for our daughter for the summer. There was only one thing that they wanted that she didn’t have on her resume. So I added it to her resume. And then I gave her a crash course on it. She’s seen the coding before so it wasn’t a complete surprise but it’s something that you can get an overall feel for in fifteen minutes and learn more in-depth in about an hour. It would take much more time to get proficient in it but they just want you to have an overall view of it. A lot of tech is like this: not too hard to learn at a high-level and then more time to become proficient. Nobody really programs in the base language - just about everyone uses a powerful tool to do the programming - you can get your work done much, much faster.

BCEagle91, looks like you are finding many openings. Things sound positive.

[Upbeat data brighten economic outlook](http://m.yahoo.com/w/legobpengine/finance/news/durable-goods-orders-rise-house-134144920.html?.b=news%2F%3F.b%3Ddetails%2F&.cf3=Jumbotron&.cf4=1&.cf5=Reuters&.cf6=%2Fnews%2F&.h=NEWS&.ts=1372216718&.intl=us&.lang=en)

Maybe the economy is recovering. And stocks can rally with rising interest rates as long as things dont get too crazy . Rising rates are headwinds for many companies.

I know two couples trying to sell their homes right now. Rising rates probably arent helping them sell their homes. Two more anecdotes for the future.

I would think that rising rates would help them. People could be in a panic that if rates rise too much they could get priced out of the market, so they’d better buy now, while they still can. Rates are still very low.

That would mean I’m going to have to buy at a high price. I still think we get that 10 percent correction. If I’m retired I’ll just own some index etfs and buy some put protection to reduce volatility.

We may get that 10 percent correction but it is starting how many futures higher than where you wanted that correction to start?

14 es futures?

That’s the conventional wisdom, that people panic when rates rise.

We’ve had so many bubbles in the last 15 years that I would hope that most people know better. But I know that they don’t.

I wish I could find more cheap money to borrow, but I can’t. It’s still out there, but it’s hard to get.

It’s hard to believe that it was just a week ago when I thought gold was going to go down to 1300. Well, wow, it’s now in the range of 1246-1254.

At the end of May I was looking at a 2013 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin and the price was $1790 per ounce. Spot price of gold was 1388 then. Tonight, the proof coin is $1740. A mere $50 discount.

I think DocT wants the S&P to go down to 1500. Let’s see what happens this Friday.

1,500 is Leavitt Brothers’ target too. Another smart trader of mine has the $compq range as 1,300 - 1,370 and he says to play the break (short below, buy above). It looks like he got stopped out and he has since been accumulating dividend blue chips.

My wife has been in defensive stocks recently (PBA, PSEC, MFC, TJX) and her account has dropped by about 1% - 2%. No big deal. And she’s getting some nice dividends in a few weeks to boot.

Commerce Dept: revised GDP growth 1.8% vs previous 2.4% rate. Downward revisions to all categories except for home construction and government. Consumer spending revised down to 2.6% from 3.4%.

A big driver of lower GDP was healthcare spending. Exports declined by 1.1%. Business spending was flat - we’re not going to grow jobs with that mode. This was basically a crappy report. And it shows that Bernanke’s in wishful-thinking mode for an end-of-year hiring boom. I would think that the market would be really enthusiastic over the weakness and resulting need for more QE. But maybe the market thinks that the economy is heading back into recession and that the Fed is going to taper anyways.

I mentioned a CC thread to my son about someone getting really good grades in school but also getting poor SAT scores. My son replied: Grade QE.

Is this end of the quarter window dressing? Lets see if we break through the spx 50 day mvg

Yup, yup EOQ markup except for AAPL. I guess funds want to decrease the AAPL % in their holdings.

Munis are having a good day for once… Looks like Monday is a temporary low. Things are ok.

I find the following interesting. I would trade up for a larger iphone. I love the size of the iphone5 as far as the feel… But I want a bigger screen for the eyes.
