Interesting day!

Good luck to your daughter, BCE.

DS’s job search is not going well. He is now 0-3. :(

The article I read on the job numbers commented that a huge %age of the job increase was in low-paying jobs in the hotels, restaurants and entertainment industry. And there are now over 8 million people working part-time jobs who would prefer to working full time.

So it seems like a mixed bag.

Doct, hope you are having fun.

“The unemployment rate remained at 7.6 percent, as discouraged workers who had left the job search resumed their search for work. More than half the job additions came from hotels, restaurants, entertainment and retail, which are usually lower paying.”

Thanks for that note. I like the details too but I’ve been busy doing admin stuff this morning and chatting with my daughter on next week. I think that the numbers are improving but am aware of the quality of jobs problem. Still, I think that many people are happy to have something, even if it is only part-time.

The article mentioned that the hours metric is important and I guess that’s the tell of part-time vs full-time. I would love to see a report with a histogram of pay and benefits on the jobs report.

What I’m seeing are large numbers and I’m mostly looking at jobs that don’t require a 4-year degree. I have taken a look at the BSCS market and it looks like there are a lot of good jobs there - I think that there are shortages there.

It’s 3:20 am Saturday morning and I can’t sleep. Other than that it great.

Doct, :).

Check out those commodity prices today.

-
10 year treasury yields 2.72 percent.

BCEagle91, I think your post about the nexus4 shows why investing in the smartphone market is sketchy at best. Too many choices in smartphones.

I am losing a little confidence in intc. The stock is down since jun 3 pretty good. That tout from your group is gerting goofier and goofier. Now intc has to get into the nexus 10 tablet?

Notrichenough, your son has to hang in there. 0 for 3 isnt bad.

There goes amazon. Starting to raise prices on some books.
Time to buy books in the neighborhood stores.

Thanks dstark.

It’s frustrating for me because I can’t really help him, I don’t have the industry knowledge or network to be able to open any doors for him. There’s a ton of biotech companies in MA, but they don’t seem to be hiring college grads, or at least not advertising the positions.

I’m pretty sure that you’ll be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy S4 new for half the price in two years. The Samsung Galaxy S2 is in the mid-$300s. The iPhones hold their value better but you’re still taking a 30% hit in two years.

The short-term problems with Intel are PCs - Microsoft is hurting them with Windows 8.0 and I think that Windows 8.1 doesn’t help much. They have to ramp up mobile while PCs are still soft.

I agree. At least he has the “3”. I hate calling the job hunt a war but that’s what it is like. My friend’s son with an engineering degree from a WPI-class school that graduated May 2012 has had two phone interviews for jobs and these weren’t that closely related to his major. He continues to hammer away at the job market with help from relatives that have some connections. His dad says that he is demoralized though - absolutely no surprise there. I think that the job of parents is to provide moral support to our kids when things look tough.

I seen a lot of job posts that want advanced degrees for the bio-type jobs. I think that there are a fair number of genetics-related jobs too.

I did a quick search and found a few entry-level jobs looking for BSCE degrees but it’s not my area either and I don’t know the nuances.

Where did you see those listings?

The number of entry chemical engineer major jobs in the Boston area is small compared to some other areas that I’ve been looking at.

“It’s frustrating for me because I can’t really help him, I don’t have the industry knowledge or network to be able to open any doors for him”

I understand it is frustrating.

I dont have the knowledge or network to help my kids either. I do have the confidence that things will work out. As parents we have to have patience. Sometimes the kids have more patience than we do.

Good news for your daughter BCEagle.

Not so much for the 25-54 group.

Thanks for those links, BCE.

Some of them he has seen already, which on one hand is good since it means he has actually been doing something while sitting in front of the computer all day.

Thanks for the link. I’ll show it to my daughter.

Has he looked at jobs in other parts of the country where more jobs related to chemical engineering are located? Do you have relatives that could hep support him in looking in different areas? The son of a coworker is living with relatives 1,500 miles away looking for work in that city as there may be better prospects there. He’s also looking here.

Wild ride in the markets today. My account opened up way up, went way down and closed with a moderate gain. Nice to see the Russell over 1K again.

It’s been a bit of a point of contention that he has been reluctant to look outside of NE. I think it is related to the gf, who will not move outside of MA and be far from her family.

That’s quite a challenging problem.
