The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

There were a couple of issues recently with vz. Speculation that there could be a spin off of some assets. Someday…maybe … Maybe not. :)

And the t-mobile merger news…

I am in the stock because I think the stock will over the long run be less volatile than the market and I dont want to look at the market that much.

I dont think you are going to get big returns over a long period with vz. If I can get 6 to 7 percent returns including the div with vz, I am happy.

Sounds like you want bigger returns…

Yes, I’m hopping for bigger returns than 6-7%.

It can happen… i dont have a crystal ball… But vz is kind of of an old fogey stock…

I cant believe I am buying some stocks my grandmother bought. That has got to be the definition of getting old. :)

Warren Buffet’s company is buying some shares so maybe I am too pessimistic. Maybe, I will be pleasantly surprised. :)

How about Alibaba for a non-fogey stock? I’m listening to NBR discussing it’s IPO.

I typically don’t like to buy ipo’s - maybe a week or two later when hopefully it’s dropped a bit but then again I don’t know much about this stuff.

I own JD again and get a nice effect.

What made you buy JD and where do you hear about these companies. I bought some xle today. There is some famous speculator (not Livermore) from around WWI who said “expect when you buy, that the price will immediately drop and when you sell, it will immediately go up” That’s what typically happens to me! :((

On cnbc or mad money. They are my source of business and stock info.
I have tons of companies to buy but I stopped buying for a while due to the high stock market.

I had JD for about a minute back in July. Actually I held it about 2 days. Bad timing, I bought it, it went down, so I got stopped out right away. Lost $80 total, including commissions. I don’t watch cable news shows for stock advice. I do pay attention to IPO’s and sometimes pick up something I think looks promising. I had some TWTR last year, but messed up on that too. Didn’t lose, but I didn’t make what I could have on it.

But I made one good pick this year. I bought QCOR in March at $64.75. It was at $93.60 on the last day it traded before the merger with MNK (2 weeks ago) MNK was trading at just under 71 the day of the merger; it closed today above 78 …so that’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I closed out on two of my favorite stocks, AAPL and BA. I made 60% on one and 20% on the other. I still have AAPL but I think I want to take a bit of profit. BA was a great stock last year but this year it’s more volatile than VZ.

Yes. BA is more volatile than VZ. :)

I made one minor screw up today. Cost me a few bucks. Nothng big.

I like the way things are going though and I would be happy if we closed where we are right now.

Options volumes look pretty low to me. It is labor day weekend.

I also closed my looser for the week, TSLA, let just say things didn’t go the way I predicted. It’s a very difficult stock to short or by puts. I was successful shorting it before but I believe nothing ventures nothing gains.

Tsla is difficult. I agree.

We all have losers. Losers suck. Part of the game.

I think google options are very difficult to trade but doct trades them.

Actually, I am finding VZ options difficult to trade. Very wide markets between bids and offers and very little volume.

I had such big plans in vz. :)

I think at least GOOGL stock is stable. VZ is inching back to where my target price is. But it’s not a piece of cake that’s for sure.
I want a lot of piece of cake stocks. :D

Lol!!!

If anyone is in the mood to blame rich business men for being crooks, greedy, etc, here is a good example. It’s old news but this guy is a piece of work. George Economou is a guy to avoid.

“I think google options are very difficult to trade but doct trades them.”

Most of the time with googl, selling puts which has always worked out well. I only have a small position in googl - 455 - 650 call spread with a breakeven of 545. I bought this in April when they reported earnings and the street was not thrilled. I’m surprise that beta = 1.06. So far my xle options are working out pretty well - I bought these based on a lot of Russians that I know who said Putin invading the Ukraine was a foregone conclusion. I have some options expiring today:

weekly aapl 98 puts for .17

weekly qqq 94 puts for 1.28 - this trade came about because I was paid .08 for buying the 8/8 97 - 96.5 and selling the 95.5 - 90 put spreads. I rolled out the 95.5 to todays 94 put which worked out well. These trades worked out to a total gain of .81.

Well, my t 34.5 straddle trade did not work today. Lost on that…made money on the short 34 puts…probably scratched for the week in t options after commissions. I bought the stock so I would not lose the stock.

I am short the t 34 and 34.5 puts that expire next week. Nothing with the calls.

My short VZ 47 puts expired worthless.

Nothing much going on with options. The aapl trades look nice, doct.

Your straddle last week was amazing - right at the max profit!

That was sweet! :)
