The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

calmom, I don’t do predictions, I go with the flow kind of traders. I usually wait to see what the traders do.
But I’m guessing from now till the end of Sep, it will be up due to hedge funds trying to catch up with s&p 500, otherwise they look bad. Then after Sep the market will find a reason to go down.

What traders or info sources do you follow? (I mean, “the traders” do different things)

I don’t usually make predictions as nobody knows the direction of the market but I would tend to agree with DrGoogle which I think is the prevailing view on the “street” therefore it is probably wrong. I’m hoping for a big drop. I usually don’t follow any specific person. I listen to cnbc for comedic relief. I like Josh Brown (especially since I’m a fan of Barry Ritholz) and Steve Weiss. When I find myself getting too wrapped up in short term moves, I turn to Ken Fisher’s Marketminder site which always puts me back on track. He’s been a pretty accurate longer term prognosticator except 2008. His prediction at the end of last year for this year was a big up year this year. This was based on the fact that most were predicting around a 5% year which lead him to either a big up or a big down year but with an improving economy - a big up year. I believe by the end of the year the market will be up from where it is today.

They are anonymous. But if you trade any stock you can get a feel when they pile in and out. Early in the morning before lunch in New York is different than after lunch. You could almost hold back and buy something later to get better price.

A stock I want to short is DGLY but there are no shares out there to short. That’s probably why it keeps going up up up up up up.

I’m glad to sold BA( Boeing), it’s down now.

There is a seasonal trend for nat gas to go up from 9/2 and end at 9/14. Will be interesting to see if it repeats this year.

Razorsharp, you do a lot of trading. Dont you razorsharp?

Hmmm at&t was 35.15 this morning. Now it is close to my breakeven point. I dont like that… I guess I am not finished there. :)

Yes, I do a lot of trading with futures, stocks, and options. I have been finding a lot of terrible stocks to short but no shares are available.

LOCO is trading up to earnings expected Thursday. Should a good short before or after earnings. That stock is so over valued it is crazy. Has anyone ever eaten there? The stores look sort of old and sloppy.

I love El Polo Loco. Healthy and tasty food. But not the stock.
Btw, Doolittle was on cnbc discussing gas. I wish I had short the market.

I mean I wish I had shorted gas due to this Ukraine.

Never eaten there…

Doolittle was bullish on nat gas, but she is usually wrong. You are using her as a contra indicator?

A few weeks ago, the S&P was doing down on the risk that Putin would invade Ukraine, but now that he has his troops there, the market did not flinch. I don’t understand that.

It might be a SoCal chain. It’s take away fast food.

"A few weeks ago, the S&P was doing down on the risk that Putin would invade Ukraine, but now that he has his troops there, the market did not flinch. I don’t understand that. "

yet

Razor , I was thinking of your comment when she appeared. She looked a lot better than the YouTube I found of her. Yes contrarian.
What do people think of Putin thread? The N word?

@DrGoogle - I’m confused by your post. Do you mean simply watching the particular stock that you are interested in trading during the day to get a sense of the direction it is moving? I agree that most of the time, the trend early in the day is a good indication of what will happen next that day-- but I don’t know whether that’s much of guide as to what is likely to happen with a particular stock going forward.

I’m a day or days or even minutes trader in my short term account. So in general I don’t care about holding long term. Traders seem to know/read/digest some news early in the morning and that’s sometimes are my signals what the stock moving short term.

OK, makes sense. Are you trading options or stocks on that basis?

I traded options for large stocks like TSLA, AAPL, BA, NFlX, AMZN because the gyrations are enough that I can make money and limit downside risk by the price of the options.
For smaller stocks, usually less than $20 or $30, I traded stocks.
