The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

“This is clearly not something I can do when I’m in my 80’s.”

Lol! I think you are right. :)

Now for this week I sold aapl 10/24 91 puts for .32; have from before spy 189.5 - 188.5 (bought), 181.5 -155 (sold)put spreads and 193-192 (bought), 185 - 162.5 (sold) put spreads that expire this week. For the put spreads I was paid some bucks. Already s&p futures are up.

What trades do others have?

Renting is definitely cheaper than buying in Manhattan.
NYT has this calculator, rent vs buy.
<a href=“Is It Better to Rent or Buy? - The New York Times”>Is It Better to Rent or Buy? - The New York Times;

The link you provided on the Chelsea coop has a basement level 2nd BR and since it faces north, it won’t get adequate light. The only bathroom is on the upper level.

My son bought a 2BR2BA coop in Greenwich Village last year and my Bay Area friends who saw it couldn’t believe the price he paid for 1100sq.ft with laundry facilities in the basement. No in unit washer/dryer allowed.
A new condo development is being built on the same street one block away and 50% have been sold at an average of $3500/sq ft.Occupancy is expected in late 2015 or early 2016.

Cbreeze, thanks for the info on the link I posted.

$3500 a ft. Wth?

So renting is cheaper. Why are people paying so much? People are betting on future price appreciation? I have heard that some foreigners are buying assets here because the US government is more stable than theirs. They don’t care about the rate of return that much. They just care about preserving their assets.

Edit…Greenwich Village is a fantastic area.

dstark, here is an interesting article for parents interested in purchasing RE for their kids. The article is 4 years old so the prices stated are extremely low. These parents have enjoyed major appreciation since 2010.
<a href=“More Parents Buying Apartments for Their Children - The New York Times”>More Parents Buying Apartments for Their Children - The New York Times;

I made some stock purchases on Thursday. This weekend someone told me that the market on Thursday hasn’t been that oversold since 2010.

Here is another article on foreigners buying expensive condos and leaving them unoccupied.

<a href=“Paying Top Dollar for Condos, and Leaving Them Empty - The New York Times”>Paying Top Dollar for Condos, and Leaving Them Empty - The New York Times;

Cbreeze, thanks for the links. I like them. I can see buying my son a studio, and then he finds a mate and has kids and I am stuck with a negative cash flowing studio. :)

Good luck on your stock purchases.

Apple earnings beat estimates. Yay!

Do you think AAPL stock will go up or down tommorow? Sometime some stocks go down with earning beats expectations.

With Apple? Up.

People on cnbc said to sell APPL calls. For me I have another stock and I can short.
Bad news from China, market may go down tomorrow.
http://www.thestreet.com/story/12920350/1/china-gdp-disappointment-could-trigger-more-selling-mni.html</a></p>

“People on cnbc said to sell APPL calls. For me I have another stock and I can short.

Not!

I can’t never listen to cnbc people. My time scale must be wildly different.

Listening to Eihorn right now. I like him he made me money on MU.

Shorted Chipotle(CMG) and made some money, not as many contracts, but in at 41 and out at 43. I think it will go down more but I don’t really want to hold it any longer. About 1 hour work.

Doct, I did a trade. I just sold the spy 189-188 put spread 1 by 2 for a little over a net .075 credit after commissions. II figure if the market is goung to recover from its decline I might as well make $150. :)

One thing I know for sure I won’t do trading in my 80s. Look at Warren Buffet, he lost more than a billion this week on IBM, Coke, and Verizon.

Warren is a long term investor not a trader and is much more successful than any of us can ever hope to be. He has a lot of others handling this kind of stuff.

For some reason, I thought today was Friday and I was trying to figure out how to maximize my profit from my put spreads:

10/24 bought spy 193 - 192, sold 185-162.5 = +.21, the 193 - 192 spread cost me .37. I could have sold it today for .36 increasing my profit on this trade to = .57

10/24 bought 189.5 - 188.5, sold 181 - 155 spreads = .11 The long portion cost me .41 and I could have sold it for .11 increasing my profit to .22.

Then I realized today is only Tuesday and I should probably take a chance and wait. I still don’t know how to reduce my 92 - 90 qqq put spread from .78 yet.

I had two partners to share expenses. One said at the bottom the market was going to drop 1,000 points quickly. The other said we are bottoming.

Only one could be correct. :)

When does that qqq spread expire? I forget. OK…10/24. I see the expiration. You are probably going to lose on that. But you will make more money elsewhere than you lost.
