The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

Oh…I did not know the ads can be blocked.

I probably won’t block the ads…I just won’t look at them.

I do not have a quad core system.

You are in the business…you have bigger needs.

A few years ago when computer sales were in the toilet, I bought a pair of used Dell business systems with a lot of horsepower for $580 each. Insane amount of power for a nice price back then.

I didn’t look at the CC ads before because they’re at the top of the page. The CC ads aren’t bad - I got FlashBlock because of other sites that are much more in-your-face. Audio-based ads are a pain in the office too.

I agree with you about audio based ads…

I do not have an urge to buy a product advertised using audio.

HP’s stock rally was short lived…

I really don’t know why it popped so much AH.

The earnings reports that I read said that it would take a long time for HPQ to recover and I generally agree with that. I think that they have the right CEO in there (much, much better than Apotheker) but she really has a lot of work ahead of her. I need her to do a really good job so that I can collect on my pension there.

I think you will get your pension…

A friend worked for Digital Equipment and he is going to get a pension…

He wants that pension.

HP ended up with Dec thru the aquisition of Compaq? Right?

Citadel is facing significant losses in FB. Maybe 30 to 35 million.

Citadel transacts for E-Trade and Ameritrade. Citadel buys their order flow.

Citadel is one of the largest, most successful hft firms around.

Yes, this is correct.

DW is going to get a pension from her DEC days - $302/month. Woo. hoo.

They won’t let her cash it out because the NPV is over some limit they have.

Assuming it is still there in 15 years, of course.

Well…302 a month is better than nothing…

I will take those checks. :)

We also have several pensions, the 1st closed and only current employees were able to cash out and move it…so that is about 800-900 per month…the second was our choice, stay in the plan, or move to defined contribution type plan, cash out and move money into new plan…employer would give you 6k per year,…being in our 50’s, staying in defined benefit is to our advantage,as DW has vested

I use Ghostery to block ads. Every once in a while for whatever reason I click the “pause blocking” button, and then I am amazed at the garbage that magically appears on my screen.

Zero pensions here…

I see that the es futures are down 2 points… Not much action…

Things are probably going to die quickly tomorrow.

Looks like 4 hft firms lost 100 million…

“Four of the top market makers in the Facebook IPO – Knight Capital, Citadel Securities, UBS AG and Citi’s Automated Trading Desk – collectively have probably lost more than $100 million from problems arising from the deal, said a senior executive at one of the firms.
Knight and Citadel are each claiming losses of $30 million to $35 million, potentially overwhelming a $13 million fund the exchange set up to deal with potential claims.”

[Why Intel Deserves Another Look - Barrons.com](http://online.barrons.com/article/SB50001424053111903964304577418241846096930.html?mod=BOL_hpp_mag)

"Intel is going mobile.

It’s taken awhile. Shares of the world’s largest producer of computer chips have been stuck in the mud in recent years because Intel (ticker: INTC) failed to adapt its high-powered chip architecture to the low-power needs of mobile processors. The dominant chips to date are based on the design of ARM Holdings (ARMH), whose long battery life made it the favorite for manufacturers of wireless devices such as smartphones and other mobile gadgets. But over the next several months, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which has spent billions on the project, will see its Atom line of low-power chips showing up in more smartphones in India, China, France, the U.K., and the U.S.

Investors should be pleased.

“Intel will be a formidable competitor in the smartphone and tablet markets shortly with new design wins and alliances,” says Los Angeles-based portfolio manager Todd Lowenstein, who runs a value-momentum fund for HighMark Capital Management, which oversees more than $16 billion. “This is not in the stock, and investors effectively have a free option on potential success in those areas,” he adds."

There is also an article in Barrons about top annuities. I like the idea about annuities…
But the actual annuities don’t look attractive to me. High fees…low returns…

I wouldn’t have written something that dumbed-down. I’m not bashful when talking about the technology.

RIM looks to be laying off 2K-6K workers worldwide. I think that most would be in Canada. This and the HP layoffs has me thinking that these are two companies that have executed poorly for a few years but I worry that it may foreshadow a return to mass layoffs which wasn’t a fun thing a few years ago and back in 2001-2002.
