The ladies who lunch

Oh structured is better! I hate that one! LOL.I should be working too, but I’ve got such a horrible head cold I don’t feel like sitting up.

Here’s another style like #34. Okay, back to work for me!

http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi35670&defaultColor=9980&N=10229&No=&selectedConcept=&Nrpp=48&ViewAll=True&Nr=AND(OR(product.siteId%3ATalbotsSite)%2COR(product.catalogId%3Acatalog20002))

Yes, I like that too. I can imagine wearing it for zoning board meetings too. Black and white means it goes with everything.

In a completely different direction, I am kind of taken with this: https://www.softsurroundings.com/P/Saint_Savin_Jacket/

Although that jacket is nice and pretty, not sure it’s necessarily the one for this type of function. I would tend to stay more with solids and neutrals and let jewelry or a scarf give it the punch of color.

When is this luncheon? Do you have time to pick something out? Have you seen anything else you like? I’ll post other ideas as I see them…(hope your head cold clears up!)

^^Btw:

Do you have anything in your wardrobe that will work for part of an outfit? Would you wear a dress or skirt or it needs to be pants? Do you own boots that are tall (up to the knee) or shorter ones that you would consider wearing? We probably need more info. from you as to what direction to look in! Maybe just a nice blouse and pants will do the trick without a jacket or blazer or cardigan…or blouse and skirt…or casual dress…what are you looking for exactly?!

At the equivalent lunch in the posh LA suburbs, 95% of the women would be wearing something like this, perhaps with a little cardigan if the weather required it:

or maybe like this:

Or this (but not so short):

Or the old stand-by:

Because 95% of my wardrobe is business, I’d probably be wearing something similar to the jackets linked to above (the boxy Chanel-style ones, or some other business-appropriate look), and I’d feel horribly out of place. I’m having some problems with my legs right now so I’m stuck with pants, and I’m constantly feeling out of place because dresses are so much more in style in my area right now than pants are.

I’m not suggesting that you should wear anything like those dresses, and don’t know what the style is like in your neck of the woods, but I’m saying that I wouldn’t specifically go out and buy something too business-like for this event.

It’s in two weeks. So I could make a trip to a mall. No tall boots, that I could wear, but I’m not averse to getting some. All my dresses are too formal or too summery. I have at least one a couple of flowy tops that could be worn with a better pair of pants. For example this one: http://reviews.softsurroundings.com/4398/25944/pagoda-shirt-reviews/reviews.htm I’ve got lots of tweedy jackets and blazers, but nearly all from the 1990s.

^^^I like that Soft Surroundings top, mathmom. I like this top too along with black pants and a white silk blouse.

I like all those dresses, but hope they are too fancy! I’m okay with looking too business like since I’m coming from and going back to business, even though in my business jeans and a nice t-shirt is fine. I can’t wear most wrap dresses like the Furstenburg one unless they have lots of stretch - not busty enough. I like the texture of the first dress and the fit and flair thing on the last one.

Mathmom:

May I suggest you go and ask for help from a salesperson? Don’t know what stores are near you, but Nordstrom, Talbot’s, Lord & Taylor, Ann Taylor, White House/Black Market, maybe J Crew or Banana Republic, even Macy’s…maybe someone can help you put together an outfit that is appropriate and something you would enjoy wearing for the event and again somewhere else. Personally, I would err on the structured side more than the flowy side for this event. However, I tend to wear more structured items anyway.

Let us know what you pick out!

That’s nice, math mom. If you are tall enough to,carry a long jacket, I can see that jacket fitting your style. I’d pair it with black pants and ankle boots.

bookworm, assuming you are talking about the Soft Surroundings embroidered jacket, I don’t know if I am tall enough. 5’-6". Tend to look a little thinner than I really am. I’d have to see it, sometimes the SS stuff is great and sometimes it’s horrible.

This dress’ fabric is so silky soft! It looks good on a 5’6" person, especially with black tights/boots.

I’m baaack, mathmom. If you like flowy and soft surroundings, do you like this one at all?

https://www.softsurroundings.com/P/Anala_Blouse/

You could wear it with more tailored or structured Grey pants and Grey boots (probably short ones) or tan pants or dark taupe color (with short tan or taupe boots)…do you have jewelry that would match this color? Is this even a color that you’d wear?

Something more structured:

^perfect

with black pants or skirt, ankle boots or tall boots, your jewelry.

perfect.

Beautiful, BB. I saw something very similar at the soft surroundings website that mathmom seems to like, but at a smaller price point. Not sure if she likes these styles or not.

https://www.softsurroundings.com/P/Isabel_Blouse/40/

The Royal Blue one I linked at #55 may be good for a woman with a small chest since it gives volume by adding the second layer. By keeping the outfit in a solid or neutral, I just think it would be nice to accessorize with brighter jewelry or a scarf. Imo B-)

We all have our own personal tastes as evident on this thread.

That said, I would not go with artsy for this event, or the Soft Surroundings tops. While I see you as artsy, having met you in person, it doesn’t seem like it would be a great fit for this occasion. I do like the Channel style jackets linked earlier and you likely could use them again for work. They are slightly business-like, but still fashionable for a luncheon.

Putting that idea aside, you did say you like the fit and flare style of dresses. If you don’t go with pants, I think you could go with a fairly casual, not dressy, dress. And you could show a little artsy, without it being VERY artsy or flow-y stuff. For example, I have the following fit and flare dress in navy and white. It comes in other color combos and in fact, is on sale this week at Boden (I didn’t get it on sale, ugh). For example, the grey and black combo might be useful to own for other occasions…
