Wow, I actually started this thread. It seems Macaulay has included housing as part of their package. Only Hunter had dorms at the time I applied for fall 2009. Its wieird to see how excited I was to get into Baruch Honors at the time.

I agree that going to Honors/MHC is not going to be as good as a top tier private college in terms of experience and value. Most kids do get the tuition free because of TAP, so one doesn’t really save for the experience they are getting.
Its a pretty good financial value, this program. However, I didn’t like it. I guess being from a poor asian neighbrhood in Manhattan didn’t help. Going to Baruch, I felt like I was only a Baruch College student. I didn’t like the regular student body of Baruch and didn’t like the resources of Baruch. I guess I am an high achievement type of guy so going to Baruch didn’t feel good for me. You feel stupid sometimes because everyone thinks youre just a regular Baruch student when you walk through the city to get to the building and around the area.
The LC is very important and it basically the only way to make friends early on. People say join clubs but some clubs are impersonal like the wall street club. I screwed up, as I was very shy I guess. The combination of me being from a poor neighborhood and not going to a college that I felt was a good experience made for a bad experience.
The grades is not as simple as it seems. Getting a 3.5 aint easy and it depends a lot on your classes. If you aren’t good at calculus, you can easily get B in it or lower, as the baruch math department is crap. Some other stuff happens like you can register for a great professor only to get a kind of bad professor who gives a ton of work. This happened to me in the 2nd semester. I think I will still get the average requirement, but I have to bring up my grades.
I feel that one should go to a top tier private over MHC/honors if it is reasonable. I just feel that being associated with the regular CUNY one would be part of is hassle and doesn't make for good experience. This is why Im trying to transfer to a top business college.
I feel in the end, that one doesn’t get enough. Perhaps the MHC is better, because it is part of itself and helps get internships. But the honors program isn’t up to par. In the honors program, you don’t get helped in getting an internship, you basically look for yourself, and it hard because firms don’t recruit from regular baruch. How much it helps to be a honors student remains to be seen. Sure getting a decent to good job out of the honors program is good, but I rather have had a better experience in the four years.

Hunter! Its the only college that actually owns its dormitory and thus can offer its dorms free for any Macaulay students. Hunters dorms are all singles located on the 25th street brookdale campus, a short commute from the 68th street main campus.

@ Multitasker
Are you referring to the dormitory or admission?
The latter one is for sure MHC -> Honors -> Regular
For dormitory I believe you just need to apply for it.

Macaulay seems to have gotten much more competitive. It’s my first-choice school and I really want to get in, but I’m starting to feel kinda worried that I’m not going to get accepted.

Can anyone possibly chance me for Macaulay? [Sorry for the long post in advance]

Let me guess. Are you a student from Cardozo?
LOL

Anyway. The ECs looks fine.
So are you interested in the Architecture? CCNY’s AS is very competitive.
Anyway.

SAT: CR - 670, M - 670 (I just retook the SAT yesterday)

What happen to your writing? Your chance is **fine/b. I hope you did well on Saturday! Let’s cross our fingers.

People that I knew from MHC usually have 1300+. Some are as high as 1500.
Your essays should be really powerful to bolster your chances. Among hundreds of applicants for each specific CUNY senior college that offers MHC program, essays is really what helps you to stand out. Make it sound and really really really sound :)

Haha, I hadn’t even heard of Cardozo (I googled it cuz I know you were implying something with that lol)

I’m into engineering actually, although architecture is a second choice.

Macaulay doesn’t count the writing section, right? At any rate, it was a 740 (and of COURSE, the highest of the lot doesn’t get counted -.-). I really hope to raise my score to past 1400 - 1450… I feel that that is a reasonable goal >.<

1500!??! DAMN.
And yeah, I kinda already figured that the essays will bolster chances. It’s going to be really hard to write a really amazing one because I’m not really into creative writing (I’m best at scholarly writing) so I don’t know how I’m going to manage that… but I will, somehow :D

Are you already in MHC or are you applying?

They probably don’t weight much on the writing. But truth is the admission staff look at the scores anyway… Your writing is good enough. 740. Just work hard on the other two. Hopefully you did well on it last week.

I am not. I am in the regular honors only. The difference is only the $7500 study aboard grant, the laptop, the free tuition, and the cultural passport.

Oh so you are applying to MHC @ City College?

Yes. The essay is probably what get you into MHC after getting amazing SAT and SAT II scores.

I guessed Cardozo because of the Science Olympiad .

Yes. I just assume that people take SAT II regardless. It is a recommendation only. They will evaluate them if you DO submit it. I was also assuming that MHC is not the only college program that you are interested in.

Hey I don’t have much of an idea about Macaulay. Can any of you tell me how competitive Macaulay program is for International Students? Please include any links to statistics if you know any. And how much exactly is the comprehensive annual cost for Macaulay, minus the $7500 given to each student?

Full Undergraduate Tuition Scholarship (excludes fees)
Laptop computer
$7500 Opportunities Fund to pursue global research, service, and internships
Cultural Passport to NY arts and cultural venues
Many students also receive housing support. See the FAQs for more information about the Macaulay scholarship package.

Macaulay Honors College welcomes applicants from New York and around the world. All students receive the same scholarship package, including Full Undergraduate Tuition Scholarship (excludes fees), whether or not they are New York state residents.

Your High School should be directed to send in your transcript. Frequently they may send it after the application deadline has passed. That should not be a problem for you. Just call the Macaulay office and let them know it is coming directly from your High School and don’t worry.

I don’t know if I’m applying to City, Queens or Hunter. ideally, i love hunter but I need to apply to the one that i have the best chance at. I don’t remember what the average sat scores were for the enrolled students at each campus. (Can someone clear this up?)
I’m an undecided major too.

I know my SAT’s are weak, I’m a terrible tester but I’m a really good student… I just hate the system… I’m so afraid my essays will not be that strong either. But I’m really working at it.

CR 550 MATH 630 WRITING 570
CR 590 MATH 630 WRITING 560
WEIGHTED GPA 95.72
May 2010: English Language, 4; U.S. History, 3
May 2009: European History, 4
May 2011: English Literature; Latin: Vergil this year

SAT IIs in Dec, Latin and either MathII or Lit (I haven’t decided because I don’t take Math anymore yet I heart literature is hard.)…

I have so many ECs, I’m very involved in student government and leadership (I take an elective course, S.O. Leadership)
I have two National latin exam awards, Euro Challenge parcipant, A city-wide essay contest 1st place, NHS (I’m on executive council for Arista), AP Scholar, I am on the Student Organization Council/Senior Council as the Senior Representative, Latin Club, Italian Club, Green Club. (Vice pres), Filipino Club, Junior Council (Secretary), I did track team and Teacher’s Aid (Like 1hr/week)

I also have done atleast 35+ hrs Outside comm. service

I am responding based on info I received after sitting in on the info session to prospective candidates held fall 2009. The Lehman College Macaulay Program Director (head of the program or the admissions there) mentioned that they did not even look at applications where the SAT Is were not at minimum 600 (for each of the 3 SAT Is). I imagine it is true for the other schools in the Macaulay schools as well?

My understanding was they received the most applications for Hunter (because at that time it was one of 3 schools to offer housing for Macaulay Honors’ students, besides its prime location in Manhattan). It also appeared that competition to get in to all the Macaulay Honor Colleges has gotten stiffer each year as the program has become better known.

So, you will definitely have to bring up your SAT I scores. I am not sure if high SAT II scores will offset the weakness in the SAT Is, since I believe it is still the core SAT I or ACT (with writing) scores that matter the most when it comes to standardized scores.

I heard that people who got in last year had very well developed essays or portfolio of materials (e.g., videos and such they put together to showcase their strengths).

Perhaps people with more up to date info on Macaulay admissions requirements can chime in.
