@Knowsstuff yes and no. About 45% of our HS graduates attend in-state colleges, with UIUC being the most popular 4 year in-state college (about 9% of the class goes to a CC and then transfers to an in-state college after taking all the required intro courses in 2 years). As a lower cost alternative to UIUC, many of our graduates go to UIC, rather than to an out-of-state college which is cheaper than UIUC, but more expensive than UIC. On the other hand, students can commute to UIC, which saves some additional money, relative to, say, Alabama, and is good for students who are not yet ready to leave home.
Of course, if a kid wants to leave home, and has the extra money (or is being offered the money), they will prefer a college which is further away.
@homerdog For some reason, Northwestern isnāt that popular a destination for kids at our HS in the Chicago suburbs. Although the kids apply to there in decent numbers, very few of the accepted kids end up attending, compared to, say, UChicago.
