It ‘feels’ that way to you and others, because the majority of applicants need a high SAT score to be considered for the most selective schools, but plenty of students with very high SAT scores get rejected from every highly selective institution to which they apply.
I am well aware that a super high SAT is a guarantee of nothing having gone through the college application process with two kids. In fact, I think kids with a great score (i.e. 1500) are wasting their time spending hours studying to eke out another 20, 30, 40 points because once you’ve passed a certain academic threshold they aren’t looking at test scores any more.
