The most interesting Chance thread

Oh yea i forgot to talk about hooks… 1st Generation family … My parents don’t have college degree… Income = 0$ living off on financial aid…

Your GPA is evaluated within the context of your school, so if you go to an extremely competitive prep school, colleges will cut you some slack. That’s why your rank within your class is so important - if a 3.4 is within the top 10% of your class, you’ll be fine. Your course-load is heavy, without a doubt, and colleges definitely appreciate students who challenge themselves, but you also have to do really well in your 19 APs (ie, know your limits!)
A strong proclivity for a certain academic subject is good, but doesn’t allow you to be blatantly weak in other areas (and that doesn’t seem to be your case). I’ve often heard that top schools like their students to be “well-lopsided”: excellent at everything, but truly outstanding at something. If physics is that thing for you, then pursue it actively.
Congrats on the awards - really very impressive.
On another note, if you’re adamant about getting basically anecdotal feedback from high-schoolers, drop the attitude and stop justifying yourself through what I can only infer are lies or misapprehensions.

You won’t get in anywhere with that ridiculous amount of arrogance. And don’t bother asking how you’re arrogant because I won’t waste my time on something so obvious.

Tone down the ego a bit and you could be special.

@OP in the link you provided in the first post you say you “got a 130 AMC 10 and is caucasian” and now on this thread you say you’re chinese? I don’t understand. And what grade are you exactly? I’m very confused by the information you provided, but if you want me to chance you given that you’ve already accomplished everything you listed, I’d say you have a great chance at every top 25 school if you explain your gpa

■■■■■ 10char

Asks for chances, then gets mad when people say he’s not top 20 material lol.

Haha also tries to correct peoples chances for him.

Why did you ask for a chance to Michigan if “you are already in”?
Furthermore if you are so great colleges won’t be concerned about your GPA why are you even making a chance thread?

Well, if your essays demonstrate your pretty egotistical attitude (as shown in this thread), I say you have a very slim chance to the top 20 schools…

Write sincere, humble essays. Explain your gpa. Then you have an okay shot.

I agree with all the above posters. Yes, you may have spectacular ECs and accomplishments, but for those top schools, the numbers come first. GPA speaks for itself–it’s hard evidence of how hard you worked throughout the years and how well you handled your classes. The numbers don’t lie. If you can explain in your application why you have a lower GPA than expected, definitely do so.
And please, if you ask for people to tell you your chances, expect honest answers and don’t get frustrated with their advice. This isn’t the place to dig for compliments or get confirmation that you are awesome, which I suspect you are doing since you can’t accept people’s truthful answers and advice.

@RetroHippo, Thank you so much! Most useful advice I had gotten out of this…
@Central , there is no arrogance… It may seem like it but all these things are going to be listed on my application and essays , i won’t even talk about them… I’ll just write about my passion and how i overcome tough situations (depends on the topic too)
@IcedCoffee, read 1st Page, I copied this format from an MIT applicant then edit each information but did not notice the demographics… I am Caucasian in real life to clarify
@Hockedydude, not even a single ■■■■■…
@astult, Well I guess i’m a bit mad because I’ve worked hard all my life and that GPA if I didn’t take this many rigorous classes then … what the heck… What are the benefits?
@Eagle, i’m not correcting anyone… Am I? I"m simply pointing out
@barrk123, Dude what the heck… I never said I"m great… I said that GPA truly is hurting my application… And there are reasons behind that. I needed a safety school between 15-30 , so a chance for those never hurts. I was actually being humble … But I guess not? to you guys
@Sophia7X, Alright thanks, but I am humble irl and I hope I can make it
@GniGirl14, The numbers don’t lie. That I know but those numbers don’t measure my capability and preparation for college. Those simply explain why a person cannot be perfect at everything. For myself, I focused on my passion and rigorous school work outside that I cannot spend enough time to get perfect work on school. I’m not digging for compliments that I’m awesome, but simply looking for the public’s view while staying anonymous.

My school would be on the same level as Exeter or Trinity or Milton-Hershey.

@prototyped
well, by stating your AMC score and where you’re from (California, LA area) you’ve pretty much given away your anonymity…

but fyi, having taken the AMC and specifically practiced on a question asking what are impossible scores on the AMC (130 being one of them), I have reason to believe you are trolling. If not, and you actually scored a 130.5 (I assume you were giving the liberty to round your score, but if so, why not round up?) on the 2012 AMC10, then you seem to be a certain sophomore who goes to a high school in Santa Barbara (is that considered LA area? norcal person here, idk how socal people characterize location. being from san jose i certainly wouldnt say i live in the oakland area)

on another note, you claim your school is on the same level as Exeter. You do realize that in the past several years Exeter students have dominated the AMC/AIME/USAMO competition series, with several near-perfect scorers and many earning spots on the USA IMO team. If your 130(.5) was the highest at your Exeter-level school (which, with all due respect, is not that impressive considering the qualifying score for AIME is around 120) then I am really wondering how you are making this comparison.

if you’re wondering why I’m making a tl;dr post like this one, it’s because I’m a little frustrated that many of your stats don’t match up with reality and it just seems like you’re trolling. I initially read your stats as “Oh hey, here’s a brilliant math and science guy who has similar interests and extracurriculars as I do. Let’s see what advice I can give him” and then you just shoot my goodwill down with misleading facts and a rather obnoxious ego.

No one with your GPA/Class Rank has a safety between 15 and 30

A lot of people don’t know how much work and talent it takes to make USAMO. I don’t really know, but I think you’re an exceptional person and would stand a decent shot (get lucky maybe?) at a lot of the tech colleges you want to go to.

Also guys be nice! I don’t think OP was trying to be arrogant. His awards mark him as a truly outstanding person, and it hurts when people write statements like “low, low chance.”

OP, I think it’s very hard for people on CC to deal with outliers like you that don’t conform to the model of a general applicant. Most people will just tell you what you already know (GPA < 3.8? SAT < 2200? = bad). In the end, nobody can really know, and you might as well read other people’s chance threads.

@Barkk, everyone that has a 4.0… Doesn’t even have all honors&AP classes… I’m one of those few exceptions to always take AP whenever possible. Sadly we don’t publicize ranks but I’m on the honor roll list of my school
@Thanks Jinduckey, I appreciate that. I have a 2250 SAT though…800 on math. Yea USAMO I had to get a tutor to train me
@IcedCoffee, geographic location doesn’t matter for chancing me… Don’t try to find me xD dude I don’t know how to talk on the Internet without sounding like I have an ego unfortunately on a “chance thread”. Sadly I’m not a ■■■■■&these are my stats if not the exact same by the time I graduate…

If I were you, I would try my luck at the good tech/science schools (MIT, Georgia Tech as a safety, Caltech, Stanford, etc). I’m sure they would probably be more forgiving of your GPA than schools like Harvard or Yale because of your math and science-related awards. Of course, EVERYONE has a low chance to schools like MIT and Caltech… but who knows? You could make it! Good luck :)

Thank you Sophia (:

19 APs…? I don’t know but I’m calling BS on this one. How is that even possible?

@gk12z2,
AP Calc AB/BC, Physics C (2), Physics B, AP Chinese, AP English Lit/Language, AP Latin , AP Chemistry, AP Biology, Environmental Science, Computer Science A, AP USH, AP Euro, AP Micro/Macro, AP Psychology and Statistics… I think that’s 19…

2 (Freshmen year & before) , 2 Sophomore year, 8 Junior year, 7 senior year… XD 13 of them I self-studied for (Micro/Macro, Psychology…etc)

I did 8 Junior year because of AP Siemens award
