No vetoes from me. I’d read any (and would like to read all) of them. I hope others veto. If it narrows to either contemporary or classic, then I’ll pick my top three in that grouping.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is relatively happy.
Just back from vacation. I read The Nix, but didn’t add anything to the conversation. Maybe I will do better next time. I don’t think I’ve “belonged” long enough to veto 
@HImom, A Room with a View is delightful. A Town Like Alice covers some tough topics (WW II), but definitely emphasizes the indomitable human spirit.
@1214mom, anybody can veto! Also, we’d all still be happy to hear what you thought about The Nix, if you feel like sharing.

@1214mom: You should veto if you see a book you’d like knocked off the list. It’s actually helpful when posters do that.
I’d rather not reread Cry, the Beloved Country. just now. All the others sound appealing!

I reread A Town Like Alice pretty regularly, but I don’t really need to read it again. But I love it so much I won’t veto it. The 1981 mini-series with Bryan Brown is great. The WW2 parts are grim, but it’s over pretty quickly. It’s very uplifting - I guarantee you will not be depressed by the end. I tried reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn when I was young can’t remember whether it was junior high or high school and it was so boring I never finished it. I am always surprised when people tell me it was their favorite book. I may not have tried hard enough.
I have no problem with having this Book Club doing “Where the Crawdads Sing.” Even though I’ve read it, the “discussions” here are much more in depth than the ones in my RL Club.

I’ve been sitting here thinking about the three classics that @ignatius posted, mostly wavering between A Town Like Alice and A Room with a View.
Since @mathmom doesn’t really need to read A Town Like Alice again (at least not this month) and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn isn’t a top choice, I’d like to go with A Room with a View. The book was a contender in our last round and made it as a finalist on several lists.
Forster’s novel fills the requirement of being not depressing and, unlike The Nix, weighs much less than a pound (only 216 pages). I think those who have never read the book will enjoy it, and those who are already familiar with it won’t mind a re-read.

I’m in three IRL book clubs. One picked *Next Year in Havana/i followed the next month by *Hondo/i. This particular book club picks a different genre each month. My other two book clubs haven’t chosen their next selection yet.
I’m reading and thoroughly enjoying Stiletto which follows The Rook. Fun!

I just borrowed “Fly Girls” by Keith O’Brien. It looks inspiring—5 women who defied all odds and made aviation history.
