My grades aren’t really that good, but they get better each year even though I take considerably more challenging classes each year. My ACT is decent for UC Berkeley, but my Extra-curricular activities are the best in my school. And I can guarantee you this, no other high school student in the state of Illinois has more political experience then I do. Am I in?

@Bsla11 Well you have quite the confidence in your ECs. Nice extracurriculars, but I’d like to remind you that there are a lot of very successful people in Berkeley who were leaders of this, founder of that, winner of FBLA’s nationals, so while it is good that you have confidence in your abilities, being humble is important as well. Your AP scores look a little weak as there are no 5’s and your GPA is on the lower side…ACTs are OK (I submitted SAT even though I got a 34 on the ACT so I don’t know). I’d say this is a bit of a reach for you, even if you have extracurriculars (because believe me once you get here you realize that nearly everyone has good ECs)

@ Firstpackage Excellent ECs that pertain to your major, shows that you’re passionate. Overall pretty good test scores and GPA, I’d say this is a really good match for you (My roommates in CNR got in with lower stats than yours)

please chance me! thank you so much in advance!

Chance me for chemical engineering

UW GPA: 4.0

-2 years of Intermediate Orchestra
-2 Years of Chamber Orchestra
-Private viola lessons
-2 Years in a Small Ensemble Zero-Hour Class
-2 years in the Junior Symphonic Orchestra branch of the Spokane Youth Symphony

-2 Years in Debate (I’ve won 11 trophies from placing at tournaments so far)

Volunteer Work:
-Assistant coach of a little league baseball team my freshman year. I scored most of the games, helped out at practices, and stuff like that. There were twelve games and probably around as many practices so I think that gives me upwards of 50 hours
-I judged at the Rookie Rumble, a debate tournament for newbies this year. I’d give myself 10ish hours
-I ran a booth at an elementary school fair a couple years
-I’ve done a bunch of stuff with Ferris Action Team, such as setting up the course for the invisible miles run, organizing and advertising movie nights, activities with ESL kids, standing outside of ShopKo holding up a sign to get donations for the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, etc.

Awards:
-National Merit Commended Student
-AP Scholar With Honor
-I made it to state in Chamber Orchestra and received a superior composite rating (1), but didn’t place

I haven’t done my essays yet, and I’m not sure how they’ll turn out. I really should have started them earlier…

Chriszeoli, Berkeley doesn’t take letters of rec

I just realized I calculated my weighted GPA wrong (I included freshman year). I think it’s actually somewhere around 4.5. If I took a zero-hour class for half-credit, does that affect the weighted GPA half as much?

Never mind, it’s actually 4.4, assuming honors classes count as .5 extra and AP classes count as 1 extra (sorry for the quadruple post). My main concern is that I’ll have a low chance of getting accepted because I’m out of state and applying to engineering.

Chriszeoli, you have great work experience, awards, and EC’s, plus your GPA is really good. I think the writing part of the SAT is pretty important no matter what major you apply to, but your other scores are great and that might make up for it. You’re definitely at a disadvantage for being out-of-state and it might be a reach for you, but I’d say you still have a decent chance. I tried to look up some stats at [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx), but the stats are a little messed up and don’t always show up for the Business/Marketing/Managing intended field of study, so I couldn’t find anything really specific for you.

I did find out that the acceptance rate for out-of-state applicants with writing scores of 600-699 and total scores of 2100-2400 in 2009 was 17.6%, but I expect it to be higher for you, because you’d be applying to the College of Letters and Science, which isn’t as selective as the other colleges, and your work experience and EC’s should help you. I hope this helps!

Why do so many of you keep writing about your accomplishments when there does not seem to be anyone responding to your “chance me?” Further, why do only 1/3 of you who seem so bent on getting into Berkeley accept an offer of admission? I am starting to think this is just a spot for bragging which is not very becoming. Is this a live and useful thread?

Yes. Somebody chance her.

philosoraptor77: Good chances, ~75%

Chriszeoli: Good chances, but still OOS is tough. ~70%.

UberSandvich: GPA a little weak, ~30%. Better chances at UCSD, ~70%.

Labyrinthus: Where’s your Calculus AB score? Also take another science SAT II if you can. Okay scores, but EECS is tough to get into. ~40%.

westfield95: UW GPA not possible, it’s out of 4.0. Can’t chance you without a GPA.

Okay, that’s it for now :)

lol sorry! i don’t know where that 4.35 came from haha… it’s 4.0. thanks!
