Oh and I got a certificate in the mail today for the “Scholarship Recognition Award” lol. I hope they give one of these for everything

@Cayton
When I went, I went in blind with no map.
Certainly felt lost for a bit but I didn’t mind it too much the campus was lovely and the Fowler Museum was incredible. I am glad that there is a good balance of social life and academics
I’ll remember that.

Did you get a taste of the campus food? I’ve heard its great.
Nice to hear the dorms look good! I think I’d rather live in the deluxe resident halls - they seem nicer.

I might be going to a UCLA event that they have up in northern California sometime soon, hopefully I will get some good information on the school (:

If you saw a tall white guy with styled hair, zipper sweater, blue buttoned shirt, ray bans wayfarers, skinny jeans, and Carl Haans shoes, then you saw me at transfer day

^that probably fits a lot of students at UCLA.

@AnthroFlo

Yeah.

And no, I didn’t get a chance to taste the campus food, but I’m sure it’s great. The housing tour guide told me it’s ranked #2 in the country!

@AnthroFlo No, I was just curious since I got a lot of free stuff on Mecha Day.

Well, I just got back, and I’m leaning towards UCLA now. I like the atmosphere and it seems I can do “more” and academically experiment. I was really surprised to be honest.

@CSB111, what two schools were you debating between?

@AnthroFlo

Berkeley and UCLA. (I am also waiting on Northwestern but probably not going to happen) I’ve always had Berkeley ahead because I am a bit brainwashed by “prestige”, but I’m fearing that Berkeley might be too harsh of an atmosphere, I was surprised how helpful everyone was at UCLA. Berkeley, nobody ever replies to my emails, I can’t get ahold of anyone etc.

Interesting @CSB111, I am also making the decision between Cal and UCLA.
Just out of curiosity, what is your major?

@AnthroFlo I was accepted for BizEcon at LA and Econ at Berkeley. LA I am considering doing the Accounting Minor, along with some other things. Berkeley I have been thinking about a double major with Stats or Math, but I think my GPA would get trashed hard.

I know some might not agree, but I think, at least for my major, at UCLA, you have a chance of getting a lot better GPA. I am not going to lie some of the Berkeley classes I’ve been looking at look absolutely brutal and I’m having a hard time wondering if I can transition.

@CSB111 you got into Haas?! Congratulations! That is no easy feat.
Are you considering graduate school?

I also wonder how difficult the transition between CC to Cal would be.
One of the main things that holds me back from UCLA is that I want to go into environmental anthropology (potentially Stanford for grad) but UCLA (while I love the school) has no environmental anthropology courses, UCLA has lower ratings on rate my professor, and they have only one professor who is specializing in environmental anthropology (who, from what I’ve found online, isn’t that great)… but I love UCLA.

@anthroflo, it seems like bruinwalk is where a lot of UCLA students review teachers. It also shows grade distributions for certain courses/years.

Thanks for the info @Zalrons, it looks like a great resource!

@anthroflo what is environmental anthtopology? I’m interested in environmental psychology, so I’m a bit curious.

@AnthroFlo I got into Econ, not Haas, I didn’t want to take the dumb stats class they require from CC and wanted to finish off Calc 3 instead. I am thinking about graduate school, but I really want to get into Finance out of college, but I am pretty scattered right now so I am trying to keep all my doors open.

I’d say look into taking classes outside of anthro that apply to the environmental aspect you like, I’m sure there has to be some overlap. If you are set on the plan that Berkeley offers for your major, I’d do that. But you have to consider you might change your interests and it is good to have options.

What did everyone put down for housing? I am filling out the app now and I think I’ll put the DeNeve transfer dorm first, then Holly, but I don’t know what to put for a third choice. Living with transfers isn’t a huge deal to me.

@oongaboonga
To my understanding environmental anthropology looks at the human relationship to their environment through the exploration of varying cultural perceptions of natural environment.
Now I’m curious, what is environmental psychology?

@CSB111

I stated a preference for transfer housing myself.

I saw their dorms today on a housing tour. They’re quite nice.

@CSB111, thats good. An open mind allows for more opportunities.

I have looked into minors. UCLA has minors in conservation biology as well as environmental systems and society; however, I did not prepare myself for any upper division science. I took a conservation biology class last fall (when we were filling out our apps) and really liked it. I felt like environmental anthropology was the perfect mix of the two but if I were to venture into upper division science courses I would need to take a lot of lower division math and science.
