The Official Fall 2014 UCLA Transfer Decisions Thread

@debraP‌

I was going to do it, but I changed my mind. I’d rather have my summer all to myself, and the benefits of TSP don’t seem to be so great as to be worth sacrificing one’s summer for. Just my opinion, though.

Wow, Life is hard. There are so many choices you can make, and so many mistakes you can make. Whenever I come across two divergent paths, I wish I could see where each one will take me.

OK, I have a question about financial aid here.

I put my CC on my FAFSA application this year in case I didn’t get into any of the UCs, or, for whatever reason, decided to stay another year. I was recently awarded financial aid by my CC for the 2014-2015 year, but since I’ll be going to UCLA in the fall, I won’t be taking any classes at my CC anymore. Did anyone else do this? Also, should I remove my CC from my FAFSA application now or let them know that I’m going to UCLA? I stated on my CC’s verification form that I’m going to UCLA in the fall. Is that enough?

What should I do? :(

You don’t need to do anything on your fafsa. People put multiple schools on their fafsa, but if you don’t “accept” the awards, then they’re not actually granted. Also if you don’t enroll in classes, they’ll pull your aid anyways.

Thanks, @2016Candles!

@CollegeDropout1‌ not to whip a dead horse but I’ve been spending the morning researching major options for my youngest daughter and we found this.
https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/CogSci.stm

@Cayton Something like that happened to me. When I go to the csac website, it says I was not awarded any Cal Grants. But it lists my school of attendance as my former CC which I was never awarded a Cal Grant for. I switched my FAFSA about a month ago to just list UCLA as my school of attendance. I’m hoping UCLA can sort it out.

So should we be changing our school to the UC we’re going to using the school change or leave of absence or leaving it and waiting for the future school/housing change to be available? They don’t exactly make it clear why they have 2 options for this. You’re already picking the term your school change is starting in

I never thought I’d say this but I might considering joining a fraternity. Or at least check it out.

@Lindyk8 Yeah, when I was doing research, I actually came across that website. It was actually those figures that made me want to major in cognitive science until I saw San Diego’s website. I found out that if I major in Linguistics and Computer science at UCLA, I can take every CS class that a regular CS takes. I really only wanted to major in cognitive science because I could take CS classes.

HAve any of you guys been keeping an eye on classes you guys want? One class I wanted too take this fall has a limit of 100 and its already half full… i hope we are able to get some of the classes we want…

@sonic23‌

I checked mine yesterday, but so far everything was still open. I wish I i knew when that “first pass” ended. I could probably look it up, but that would require actual effort on my part…

@sonic23 I know they add more classes for the most part if it is a really big class, or crucial for transfers from what I’ve read.

Does anyone know how many units you get to enroll in at orientation? Also, I know a lot of classes are “first pass” but what if you’re not officially in the major (the case for a lot of majors at UCLA). What happens then?

@CSB111‌

I can’t answer your other questions because I don’t know the answers to them, but for the question regarding units, I think enrollment isn’t restricted by units, but by the number of classes. I’ve been told that everyone can enroll in up to 3 classes. No more than that. Some people have gotten around that restriction, though.

Hmm, I’ve looked up available philosophy classes…none seem to be filled up or close to filling up, but I get the feeling that they will be soon. :frowning: I’ve heard that a lot of people can’t enroll in the classes they want because they have later orientation dates, despite the claim by UCLA officials that spots are reserved for every orientation date.

My orientation date is August 15th, btw. :(

EDIT: On the plus side, I only have to worry about enrolling in two philosophy classes, not three. The UCLA philosophy department states that three philosophy classes may be too much for new students.

At least no one can say that philosophy is a joke major!

@Cayton You can’t take anymore than three classes?

@CollegeDropout1‌

I don’t think the counselors at orientation will let you enroll in more than three classes. Probably because the workload might be too much for new students or because others may need those spots.

I was going to take 4 classes my first quarter but my cousin who just graduated said take 3 classes a semester as long as possible. I think I’ll take 3 then from there reassess. I want to get the Accounting Minor (I only need 3 extra classes) and the Computing Minor which could be a pain. I heard the PIC classes fill up super fast.

@CollegeDropout1 Did you decide on what you’re going to major in? I saw CogSci and the Linguistics/CS up there. I still think Math of Comp is your best bet by far though.

@CSB111 I’m going to do Linguistics and Computer Science, this will actually allow me to take my CS classes than Math of Comp. Plus, I don’t think I can handle upper division math. My friend goes to UCLA, and he told me he got a B- in Linear Algebra and he is way smarter than me, so I know I won’t be able to handle UCLA’s upper division math classes. I also want my degree to say computer science.

I don’t know that incoming transfers are limited to only 3 courses. They may discourage taking a 4th, but I don’t think it prohibited.

I know for The College of Letters and Science, the max number of units is 19, which is about 4 classes.

@2016candles yea your right I think we are highly discouraged to do it. But I don’t think we’re not allowed to.

I have heard they also suggest taking 2 classes from your major and one non major related elective your first quarter.
