@Cayton

Lol. It’s not that bad but sometimes we just have nothing to talk about.

@oongaboonga

Yeah. You can drink in your dorm if they are not there.

@ocnative

Do you see yourself becoming friends with them? Or do you think you’ll be roommates and nothing more?

I’m curious because I’ve never had a roommate and I wonder how others interact with their roommates or plan to interact with them.

I’ve had a really good experience in Towle. Our floor is made up of transfer students (with the exception of three sophomores and a study abroad person) and everyone gets along. I’m happy about how everything worked out.

@calbro so jealous.

@Cayton

My roommates are pretty awesome. And I’ll be friends with the other floor mates, just have an open door policy. Don’t be exclusive.

@calbro

Dude lucky. Lol

@ocnative

Great to hear! I just hope I don’t get the roommate(s) from hell, lol

@cayton food in Berkeley is one of the best in the country. It’s where the food revolution started with Chez Panisse (and Peets). I don’t know about the campus, but the city is stellar.

@lindyk8

Chez Panisse is expensive as ■■■■. Heard the food is really good though. Alice Waters and all.

@ocnative there is a cafe above that is more reasonable with pizzas, etc.

Also, Fanny’s is a cafe she started near 4th. You basically stand around a bar. (Although maybe it closed, I can’t tell…)

So, um…how’s school going for you guys?

All moved in, best decision ever!! the place is incredible and the people are just amazing here! :)

@ucastell

I can only imagine. I’m glad you’re enjoying your time at Berkeley. Before you know it, you’ll have graduated.

Savor your time there while it lasts. I know I will where I’m transferring. :)

@cayton, thank you that’s very nice of you. Yeah I can honestly say that this school is great! I love the people here, the conversations we have with my floor mates. We’ve become pretty close, and have even gone to SF, Oakland etc together :).

I’m so glad to hear that @ucastell ! Glad the dorm has worked out so quickly, too.

Do college rankings really matter to UCB students (a survey)… I bet you already know the answer.
<a href=“The results are in: Do college rankings really matter to UC Berkeley students?”>http://www.dailycal.org/2014/09/05/college-rankings-really-matter-uc-berkeley-students-verdict/

@lindyk8

One of the comments provides an interesting insight on the article you linked to:

"“So, while rankings are a large factor in the majority of decisions to attend UC Berkeley, they very rarely have the final say.”’

This is a textbook example of fitting data to a pre-existing narrative. I can easily read the data as “86% of respondents think ranking has a huge impact on choosing a college.”

I didn’t read it all the way through, mainly looked at the graphs, but yeah you’re definitely right. I think UCB’s ranking has entered just about everyone’s head who enrolled there.

–> Some students never gave it a thought… >:)

I thought that this was a very interesting article about college rankings

<a href=“The US News rankings are terrible for students. Why don't colleges stop them? - Vox”>The US News rankings are terrible for students. Why don't colleges stop them? - Vox;

^A historical document detailiong the history of freshman admissions at UC Berkeley, written in 1989. It makes for fascinating reading in my opinion and I encourage you all to look through it.

A fun fact about the UC system discussed in the article:

Up until 1986, students could only apply to one UC campus. Seriously. lol

Quoted from the article:

“The increasingly intense competition for admissions has left Berkeley with no alternative but to turn away many highly qualified applicants, disappointing thousands of worthy students in the process. The procedures used in making these difficult decisions are properly objects of public scrutiny, and in recent years they have aroused growing controversy. This controversy has reached perhaps its highest pitch in the widely-publicized conflict on Asian-American admissions – a controversy that, as Chancellor Ira Michael Heyman has acknowledged, damaged relations between Berkeley and the Asian-American community and undermined the trust and respect that Asian-Americans have traditionally felt towards the University. 2 At the same time, Berkeley’s vigorous policy of affirmative action for historically under-represented minorities has also aroused bitter controversy on and off the campus, with some suggesting that the University has gone too far and others suggesting that it has not gone far enough. 3 In each of these conflicts, the zero-sum character of the struggle – a struggle in which fundamental group interests and values are at stake – has placed unprecedented pressure on the University to explain and to justify its admissions practices.”

Interesting!
