The Olympics

No spoilers!!!

Thanks!!!..

I am not liking all the press ragging on Vancouver as if somehow they planned the weather; especially the Seattle paper with some sort of smugness, as if the PNW doesn’t all have the same weather!! They act like a little brother picking at the flaws of a successful older sibling instead of realising we should all be rooting for good things for the region. The tone of the articles and comments is rather snarky.

Yeah, they should have done better with the ice & yeah the snow at Cypress is a real bummer, but the fog being a crisis; weather happens, don’t blame that on the area. Any one who lives here knows this is a crazy warm winter with a really early spring.

As to the hydrolics in the opening ceremony, who cares, I mean if they had not told us, the three columns rising would have looked fine. It seems like the press just looks for any little flaw to turn into a big deal.

I saw the “Japadog” on the today show. I’d go to Vancouver just to try these!

http://www.japadog.com/menu/index.html

Just would have a hard time choosing which one to try first!

somemom, I agree with you - Seattle media ragging on Vancouver is like the proverbial pot and kettle, LOL! Didn’t we have a *New Year at the Space Needle *fireworks fiasco a couple of years ago?

Youdon’tsay, I hope you have not signed on for CNN breaking news alerts, because they are sending out Olympic spoilers.

I’ll google the downhill results. Thanks.

I’m watching the cross country skiers. As I just posted on another thread, I’m blown away by these skiers’ physiques. Incredible. From an endurance/cardio perspective, are there many other sports which can result in such fitness? I wonder how many calories per hour these athletes burn?!

Gobs I would imagine. I feel the burn in my thighs just watching them!

Yeah, they’re impressive.

No news alerts, but after seeing your post I couldn’t help myself and spoiled it for myself. :(

Noooo, I DO subscribe to CNN breaking news - and I HATE spoilers! Guess I’ll watch a taped House show tonight instead…

Youdon’tsay - is your frowny face is a spoiler?

No, it’s not. My frowny face is a commmentary on my lack of willpower.

It was terrible for Ds and I to have to watch figure skating last night without spoilers!

Even when gymnastics is televised “live” it’s usually not really live (since there are often multiple events going on at once.) I sit there with my laptop and get updated scores as I’m watching. I can handle my favorite falling off the beam or falling on the ice if I know about it in advance.

Oh good - you scared me. I am looking forward to seeing it and have been avoiding seeing the results, but I had visions of Von DQing when I saw your frowny face.

^^^^^LOL, missypie, me too. I didn’t have spoilers last night and was a nervous wreck. I want all of them to skate their best, and then let the chips fall where they may. I feel so bad to see years of hard work end up in a heap on the ice.

NRd- me too!!! Is that a mother of athlete thing? I like to see both teams play their best and have a real winner, no gymnast fall, no skater fall, no Xsnowboarder spin out, etc. I used to hate tie breakers, too, being the goalie’s parents when the final of an entire tourney is determined by a shoot out (hockey/soccer) is so sad!

My mother used to laugh when ice skaters fell. Nice, huh?

It must be. I remember once my DD’s club soccer team was playing their most “hated” rival. The score was tied at the very end of the game until the other team got a penalty in the box. I said “Oh, I feel for the Mom of that goalie.” I felt worse a moment later when he called my daughter’s name to kick the potentially winning PK. It was torture of the worst kind. I was happy when she made the kick, but felt really bad to see the goalie crying afterwards, blaming herself for what was actually a team result. It’s the nature of sports, though.

I don’t even remember whose mom it was, but there was an athlete on last night’s broadcast whose Mom always has to leave when he races/performs because she is too nervous to watch. Maybe Evan’s Mom? I can sure relate.

Yes, it was Evan’s mom. Nastia Liukin’s mom doesn’t watch her either. I have always said that I can watch any kid of mine do anything after years of watching D on balance beam.

Back to last night’s figure skating for a second - after reading all the hype about Weir here and elsewhere, I was expecting…more, to be honest. He was fine, he was clean and vaguely personable on the ice, but he wasn’t very interesting. I’ve always loved Evan and I’m SO happy he did so well last night! I’d love him to medal. I also thought that the Swiss guy (Stephane something or other) was entertaining, the Japanese guy who ended up in 3rd was good, and the young Czech guy who concluded the program will be really good in 2014. I’m excited for tomorrow night!
