The Olympics

And woohooo for Frank Carroll too!! He deserves it at 71!

Evan looks 10 years younger up there. The boy wanted it bad.

A big shout-out to Frank Carroll for finally getting his gold at the age of 71.

Remember the goofy laurel wreaths in the summer Olympics? No one looks good in a laurel wreath.

^^^^^^^^^Oh yeah - those were really dumb!

I have no idea why my post showed up twice. I only posted it once. But it’s still my opinion!

At least in the Tom Jones video, he was sort of making fun of himself with the fake muscles and swagger. If his tongue was in his cheek during this performance, he was the only one who knew it.

^^^^^^Haha! So true! But I hope he didn’t think this was tongue in cheek with the way he was almost crying in the medal ceremony. He really thinks he’s hotttttttt!

Yes, it looked like Plushenko couldn’t believe that he lost. The scoring has changed a lot since he won his gold medal, D and I were discussing today that most of the competitors had trouble formulating programs to maximize their points with the new scoring for their first several competitions. We were hoping Plushenko hadn’t mastered it yet!

So, in 4 years, will all the guys come in with quads and will one guy do a quint?

momlove, I hope you saw the medals ceremony!

There was Evan looking so young and relieved next to Plushenko looking smug and teary and there, in the stands, was Evan’s mom reminding me of Michael Phelps’s mom.

BTW: I also liked Johhny’s performance. Well done, Johnny. And his costume was terrific!

We did see the ceremony! Evan has such a great, sweet smile! His mom was so emotional; it was touching. I thought Johnny did great too and thought he would score higher. Plushenko looked bored during the awards ceremony. Not disrespectful, really, but definitely bored.

I thought we were going with no spoilers on this thread? :frowning: My DH convinced me to wait and watch US coverage instead of the Canucks live…oh well, I get spoilers from people “live” too!

Someone just interviewed Mr. Silver Medal and he said he was very surprised that Evan won without doing a quad.

Geez - the quad is NOT the be all end all! When is he going to wake up and realize that!

^^Yeah, he thought he had earned the gold. Evan was more graceful and presented a better overall program. Jumps aren’t everything. I’m impressed when they are completed successfully but they seem to upset the smooth flow of the choreography. And I HATE Plushenko’s hair.

How could you all stay awake for the medals ceremony - left coasters? I had to keep waking myself up to see the actual programs and it was midnight when I went to bed right after Evan won the gold. Did he mouth the words to the National Anthem? My family and I think that all Olympic athletes should have to prove that they know the words to it when they try out for any Olympic team.

Yesterday was a great day for watching the Olympics - it seemed there was something on for a good part of the day.

Evan! Evan! Evan!

We were on our feet screaming at our house. My heart was actually pounding during his performance. I was so happy that he skated a clean program - no regrets, no matter what.

I was also proud of Johnny Weir and was shocked at the 6th. Thought he would be 5th or maybe even 4th.

Jeremy Abbott - well, if I was a betting woman I would have bet on a perfect long program (like Evan did in Turino after his disasterous short) but it wasn’t to be.

Yevgeny’s (that’s EUGENE, everybody!) program was simply cheesy. I always remember Russian choreogrphy as being either classically beautiful or edgy. His was just tacky.

I think the world is going to hear a lot more from the Japanese guys. I enjoyed all of them. I’m not fond of the recent crop of Japanese women - too robotic, just lots of jumps - but the guys are terrific.

Great night.

I guess that was the best figure skating night at our house. I’ll watch ice dancing but don’t care a lot about it. And our women don’t have much of a chance.

Again, awesome job, Evan. You’ve made us all proud and happy.

I think that if the second Japanese guy had nailed his quad he would have won the gold and he should have won the silver as it was. He had a very challenging program and except for the one quad he was pretty solid.

You know when your old and remember that doubles were the norm. I wonder if Katarina Witt or Brian Boitano would have been in the Olympics now.

If I recall, the conversation about Katerina Witt was the same as about Evan - she didn’t have triples and others did - can she win? I think eventually quads will be the norm, just like triples became the norm for women, so maybe Evan should retire.

My D is so funny. She is absolutely obsessed with Evan but HATES when the gold medalists try to repeat, because the results are usually disappointing. After Evan’s performance (for which she jumped up and down and screamed) she said, “I never want to see him again.” Me: “But you’re obsessed with him.” Her: “I was obsessed with Sasha, too, and shouldn’t have ever had to see her again.”
