The Price of Admission - book

How many URMs are in a position to give donations?
Anyway, a URM giving a large donation will have the same chance as a non-URM giving a large donation to have his/her kid admitted.
The finaid program at Harvard and other schools actually de-emphasizes race in favor of income.
When I was applying to colleges, I looked through some booklets on available scholarships. There were lots available for people born in certain areas, or to descendants of certain folks and/or ethnicities. Guess what? Except for Native Americans, those folks were all of European descent. I don’t know if these scholarships still exist or if the colleges have succeeded in breaking the bylaws that established the scholarships in the first place.

Whoa. I know three or four URM families who have children at Dartmouth and Princeton. While not sure about the number of commas they’d be willing to part with, two of these families are headed by two of the best surgeons in town. While surely not the majority, it’s pretty ridiculous to assume they don’t donate. In fact, and I don’t mean to inflame, it’s rather ignorant.

Oh, I don’t doubt that middle class URMs do donate, as do other middle class alums. What I was asking was how many are “donors” of the kind that can leverage their donations into admissions for their kids. I’m not talking even tens of thousands dollars. More in the range of several millions.

In the same vein, the number of double-hooked whites (large donors who are alums) is far larger. I don’t have any problem having their kids admitted preferentially (see posts above).

I think the first comment is meant to suggest that those who can dish out double comma amounts are not many, and therefore a minority by definition. Whether they are ‘under-represented’ would depend on what your denominator is.

I agree --and tried to say that in my post. :)
