The Random Questions thread

@1214mom " … but I had a wild hair moment …"

Funny!

My daughter received mail with “Sr.” after her name, as in “Jane Doe, Sr.”. For what it’s worth, the doesn’t have children and her first name is different than her mother’s.

Which leads to my random question: If a mother and daughter have the same name, do they use Jr./ Sr. or any other differentiation?

Has anyone transported from Costco or anywhere else for that matter, a new carpet that is rolled, in their car? Just measured my SUV and it can hold a 5-7 ft long item, I think, with the from seat down. I have ordered them online before and do not recall the size at our home delivery. Maybe fold it for transport? Any ideas?

Can it be tied to the roof like a Christmas tree?

What size is the rug?

I was named for my mother, so was immediately given a nickname. I don’t recall having any mix-ups with names, probably because my mother used her maiden name as her middle initial.

My husband and oldest son share the same first name (which neither use!), but have different middle names that both start with the same letter (our son is named for my father-in-law, but we didn’t use “the second”). My husband has opened up quite a few things by mistake. One of them always had to call for jury duty - do you want the person born in 1957 or 1993?

Back in the day my husband went by first initial, middle name, last name, but now that everything has to “match” (birth certificate to driver’s license to passport), he lists all three names in full on all documents.

My uncle’s name is Bill and his father’s name is Bill (really William, but it doesn’t matter).
Someone once called their home and asked for Bill. My uncle’s mother said “do you want big Bill or little Bill?”
The little girl calling said “It must be big Bill - he’s in the second grade…”

We just got a large area rug and we were able to fold it. I would think though it depends on how thick the rug is.

My daughter’s pre-school class had two teachers named Betty. Based on height, one was “Big Betty” and the other “Little Betty.”

What interesting thing, though, was that even though “Little Betty” was at least 20 years older than “Big Betty” (a fact that was obvious to all of the adults), each and every preschooler assumed that “Big Betty” was older (presumably because she was taller).

I learned last night that my husband was quite confused when he moved away from the region in which he was born and raised and began to meet people who had middle names but who were not Christian.

I will admit to having been equally confused to learn that in addition to having the familiar first name and Baptismal name (middle name), he also has a Confirmation name.

I thought just about everyone has a middle name. In my experience, it’s very rare not to have one.

I wouldn’t fold the Costco rug- you don’t want creases that might not come out easily.

The rug will probably be wrapped in heavy plastic. If it’s flexibke, you can bend it a bit to fit in your car. We’ve done that with a 9 x 11 foot rug in our minivan. If that doesn’t work, you can have the end of it stick out your front window a bit.

I just found out that a gas credit card I have only had for 6 months is being discontinued. It is a card that doesn’t have stations available where I live now but didn’t want to close it so as not to get a credit ding. I’m wondering if I will get dinged because they closed the entire card company. Has anybody had this happen to them?

I’ve had no impact when a card was closed for inacivity.

I did see a lower score when I reported a card on my acct wasnt mine and they removed it. (I didnt complain on the other credit listing and can see the continuing score difference.)

@lookingforward, my card is not being closed due to inactivity, the entire card company is no longer going to be in business so all card holders will no longer have an account.

This trend of painting one fingernail a different color, usually the ring finger it seems - does it have any symolism or meaning behind it?

The rug would be 7-8 ft. I think I would not be capable of carrying it on the roof. I think either the fold method or just have it delivered when able. Thanks for the ideas including sticking it out the window diagonal.

We’ve fit some very long items in my Honda CRV by putting the rear seats down, pushing the front seats forward, and sometimes using the open space between the front seats for extra length. We fit an unassembled wooden hammock stand (Comes in 1 box. Box is 76" x 16" x 7") in our CRV.

Re: credit card limits- I have this vague memory from somewhere that if you don’t need a huge credit limit, having one could possibly hurt your credit rating because of the amount of debt you could take on. That might have been an issue back in the recession- not sure. But I do recall calling one of my CC companies and actually asking them to lower it because I didn’t need that much of an open line of credit on that card. Also, with many cards you can typically get a temporary increase if you are making a huge one-time purchase that may take you over your limit. You either have to ask or find the place on their website/app where you can put in the amount of the purchase and see if it instantly is approved. I found this out when we were paying for a large family cruise. I never knew you could do that.

As for the rug, if the car is a sedan, will the seat fold down so you can run it through to the front seat? If not, do you have a friend with a bigger SUV you can borrow?

It is Costco. Buy the rug, drive up to the loading curb at the front of the store, and have a Costco employee help you load it. If the rug does not fit, the return counter is just a few steps away. Then come up with Plan B.
