Are avocados grown in Hawaii? I wonder if yours stays fresher without browning because they are local and “fresh” ??/
The biggest avocado I’ve ever seen was the one we bought from a farm stand in Kauai! Mr. and I couldn’t finish it in one sitting. And we love avocados! Never a leftover! That was eons ago. But I don’t think avocados are a major crop there. I always buy local fruit and vegetables when we travel to the islands, but avocados are always mainland grown. I skip them.
Yes, avocados grow in our state and on our island. I mostly eat ones grown by friends and very fresh. That’s likely why they don’t brown quickly.
Really, the only foolproof solution I’ve found is to just go ahead and eat the other half. You know you want to! But second best solution for me is putting the remaining half face down on a plate in a puddle of lemon juice.
Looking for opinions on either the Bissel Green Machine (not the “mini”) or the Eureka similar model.
You know, for a lot cleaning cushions, rugs, carpeted stairs
I had a ginormous mango on Kauai. It was fabulous but they charged by the pound and it cost $12!!
Had the Bissell and liked it. No carpeted stairs in the house here, so the machine was passed down to friends.
My d has the green machine and it did a fabulous job cleaning the (very old) carpet on her stairs.
I think Costco carries it in store - I’m going to check this weekend
I have a random question for y’all. How long have these independent contractor people who look like employees been in big box stores like CostCo and Lowe’s? I had to go to Lowe’s recently a couple of times and it took me a hot minute to realize that the folks in the blue vests (not the red vests) wanted to sell me gutter guards or a new HVAC. Had the same thing happen in CostCo with them wanting to sell me new windows. I do not like this development!!
I think for Costco they’ve been there many years.
Costco contracts with local businesses to provide installation services. So these guys are employees of the company, not Costco. Just like the people who replenish the flowers in the flower cooler (independent florists contracted by the store) or folks who demo roadshow products. That has been around for a long time. I’ve used them to install minisplits and to replace kitchen countertops. Both times the folks doing the work were great, and the products were top notch.
I am new to Costco, so not familiar.
They definitely haven’t been there at Lowe’s that long though. I did not like it. It’s like walking through the mall past all the kiosks where the vendors are trying to get you to stop and try this lotion or whatever.
At our Costcos, these guys just hang out by their booths as you head for the exit. No sales pitches of any kind unless you stop and ask a question. I find the mobile phone booth people annoying though because they always try to strike a conversation.
There was a period where the solar people walking around Hime Depot were very aggressive. It made shopping unpleasant. I haven’t noticed them lately so maybe they got complaints.
At our Costco, they all have to stay by their station and be very minimal in reaching out to customers. Mostly they are the cell phone folks and solar/PV. I just smile & say “I’m good” and they leave me alone. Sometimes there are toadshos folks but they also stay at their table.
At costco they are usually as you walk in like the phone people, a few demo-ing their stuff along that first aisle like pots and pans, blenders that can basically do anything including curing cancer, a BBQ grill that never ever ever burns anything. I don’t need them. Then as you leave there are what I call the more permanent booths, more of the construction people like putting in cabinets, siding, water heaters. I don’t need those either.
I had a friend who after retirement did the flower vending gig at Costco but employed by an outside person. She went like three times a week in the wee hours of the morning (like 5:30am!) to arrange and load the flower area. That grew old especially in the winter - she tried to get hired part time by Costco then but never was offered a position.
They’ve been there forever I think. Sometimes they’re there to demonstrate products which they are trying to get the company to carry in the store. I personally think it’s fun to see what might be new or useful to me.
In Home Depot we got a salesman for a deck stain (already carried in the store) but it was great because he really was able to give the guidelines for use–temperatures, colors etc. He even advised us NOT to buy it at the time but wait for better conditions to apply the product for our use.
Costco in our state is the preferred retailer to work for because they pay good wages and give good benefits and treat employees well. The contractors aren’t their responsibility. Folks giving samples and all the others without a Costco name badges aren’t Costco employees. They don’t get the same wages, hours & benefits.
