are there any bio majors with a concentration in genetics? how is the genetics program, if any, and are opportunities in the program limited for undergrads?

i’m interested in double majoring in MCDB and something else liberal arts (music, poli sci, or econ… wish yale had a journalism major).
how popular is the double major? would you recommend against it?

there really isn’t a bio major with a genetics ‘concentration’ to my understanding. There is a neuro-bio track, but I don’t think there is a genetics track for undergrads. That said, there is a lot of opportunities to do molecular biology/genetics research as an undergraduate. I wouldn’t say you are very limited at all!

There are quite a few ppl that do double major, although it does put some what of a cramp on what kind of classes you can take due to you having to fulfill the requirements for both majors. Personally, I wouldn’t really plan for a double major just because it may limit your opportunities. Most people that I know that have come to Yale planning on double majoring have decided not to, and most people that are really double majoring just kind of stumbled on it as they noticed that, in pursuing what interests them, they fulfilled the requirements for two majors.

Keep your options open :)

Also, when I said “quite a few”, I didn’t mean the majority or even a significant fraction of the people double major. Just more than a few people choose to double major. I can’t give you exact numbers although I’m sure they’re out there if you choose to look.

chyln – that’s interesting that peopel don’t plan to double major. I’d imagine that double majors would have to complete two senior theses?

Hey, I was also wondering how active Yale’s science clubs are… if you guys have any, that is. I think being part of a biology club would be cool :P… but what kind of activities would club members engage in?

Hey janerdoo,

not relaly sure about the senior requirements for double majors… so can’t really say about the two theses or not.

funny that you should ask about the science clubs. A couple of my friends and I just started one science club promoting undergraduate research on campus. I was going to make a post about it a little later after we’ve got our website up. If you would be interested in getting more information, be happy to talk to you about that. PM me.

We’ll also be present at the bulldog days bazaar. :)
