Emilybee said “…the people in the court side seats and lux boxes are not tennis fans and are there to be seen, not for the tennis.”
Oh my word, this morning’s TV news was so wall-to-wall luxo box seat warmers it was…so ugh! Oprah, Gayle King, etc…No true tennis fans. Here to be seen! Well, it’s their business, not mine.
I used to get invited to Arthur Anderson’s lux box and except for us none of the people even cared about the tennis. They were all inside schmoozing. Only famous person ever in that box was Tiki Barber. He even would come out to the terrace and watch once in awhile. I must admit to spending time looking through my binoculars into the Donald’s box and counting the blondes. They used to publish a chart of all the lux box holders so you knew whose box might be interesting to look into.
But back to the tennis - Petra absolute rubbish today. WD Flavia for wearing her down. Who had two 30 something Italians in the semi’s!?!?!?
Only person left in draw who can make the final some what interesting is Vika. Kills me to have to root for her but is what it is.
Hopp Rogi!
fyi - They just announced that tonight’s men’s semi is moved to 7pm ET because of forecast for rain. Was supposed to be after dubs exhibition. Good move by tourney.
Rain delay! @emilybee, I think we’re going to keep our subscription for next year (holiday mini-plan). Will we be offered an opportunity to upgrade our Arthur Ashe seats, from lower promenade to loge? I expect it would be around double cost, not sure I would do it but just curious.
It can take years to get to move down from Promenade. There is a very long waiting list. We finally gave up after they got rid of all the ushers you could pay to move you down (they knew who came and when and who they moved to even better seats) and switched to series tkts in LA.
I have friends whose box was court side when Louie was center court and their comparable box in Ashe was first row above second set of lux boxes. All the seats court side went to corporations. It’s been 17 years and they’ve never been able to move any lower and they have all two weeks day & night sessions.
Thanks - I figured as much. I’m okay keeping my seats under the press box and upgrading here and there for specific matches (or sneaking down, new friends who have had their upper level seats for 10+ years demonstrated with ease).
I sat in 1st row loge at Ashe as well as 4th, 5th and 7th. I did not like the first row seats (although we could see Jamie Foxx, Boris Becker and Niall from One Direction…to my daughter’s amusement). I’m about 5’4" and had to sit forward in my seat to look over the top of the ledge in front of us. It was uncomfortable and I tried not to lean forward too much because I didn’t want to obscure the view for the people behind us. (As a hockey fan you know not to lean forward in your seat.)
^ they used to be even worse. The first row had plexiglass on top of the ledge. People complained and they removed them, I am only 5’1 so was really difficult for me.
Gasquet was his normal useless self against top guys but it’s all good when he’s playing Roger. Anderson couldn’t find the court. At least the matches were over before it rained and I could go to bed at a decent hour.
I was also getting tired of the Serena fans who were comparing this year to Steffi Graf’s 1988 Golden Slam. Steffi Graf dominated the majors in 1988 in a way that will likely never be duplicated again. I think she lost just one set (to Martina Navratilova in the finals of Wimbledon, and even then, she won the final two sets 6-1, 6-2). Serena was pushed to a third set in approximately half her grand slam matches. Serena is one of the top 5 female players of all time, on par with Graf, Navratilova and Evert, but even if she won the US open, her 2015 would not have been comparable to Graf’s 1988.
Vinci seemed to be so genuinely surprised and happy when she won. I thought she played a very strategic game - really mixing up her shots. It obviously threw Serena who is used to just muscling in her wins. I disliked Serena’s roars when she would win a point or her opponent made an error. Not classy at all.
I’m not Serena’s biggest fan but she is an incredible athlete and competitor. There was a lot of external pressure placed on her to complete the calendar slam, it was expected. There’s a reason it is rarely done, it’s difficult! I think a lot of the screaming is trying to psych herself up, men do it as well. (Although in the montage of big points that ESPN played after the match, one of her screams was directed across the net and she appeared to be shouting, ‘yes b-!’)
Roberta played her own match, didn’t try to match Serena at the baseline. Smart player, great doubles experience leading to many net points won. She earned this.
Roberta didn’t get nervous because she had no expectation of winning at all. She had her airline ticket booked back to Italy for Saturday!
Serena didn’t play well at all. So many returns were dumped into the net. And Roberta made a good challenge to a call. As I recall, Serena served. It would have been an ace and the game would have been over. Roberta challenged. The serve was out and I think Roberta won that point.
I was doing other things during much of the women’s’ final, but sat down to see the end. Loved how those two women hugged and celebrated. I was so touched by Panetta’s retirement announcement. What a way to end your career! Now I’m hoping for the cherry on top of the whole thing with a Federer victory tomorrow. Please, tennis gods, please…
Went to Boston yesterday so didn’t see match until we got home. Classy match, classy women. So nice to watch a match where players are thinking out there and constructing point. Plus, no over the top grunting or screeching. Very happy for both Flavia and Roberts. I started tearing during her speech. I’ll miss her on tour.
