“Why would the tournament put such a popular match into the smallest stadium?”
Because it was a 2nd Rd doubles match?
I’m surprised Isner’s parents couldn’t get in. Even on the smallest courts - like the outer courts at Wimby where there are only a row of benches - there are a few seats reserved for the players coaches and camps.
It seems like a lot of the girls and Murray could benefit from a full-time sports psychologist. Doubles is really popular at Indian Wells. They should have let people sit up high in the empty stadium next door, but they wouldn’t. Today’s lineup is fantastic!
In a doubles match each team gets 6 seats. So Isner’s three were taken by coaches and girlfriend. His girlfriend offered to give up her seat to his mom, but mom refused. Seems like a very nice family.
The Bryans played at the same time and had a bigger stadium. The tournament could have put a singles match of less popular players on Stadium 6 and moved the Isner/Roanic v. Lopez/Lopez match to a larger stadium.
His father is about 6 feet. I am 5’8 and he was not as tall as hubby who is 6’2. John gets his height from his mother. She is a large (not fat) but big boned woman. Also taller than I am and a bit taller than her husband. I noticed her hands which were much larger than mine.
Seems silly that they needed their coaches there. Should have given their seats to his parents.
Singles>Doubles
EvilChestBumpers>FreakishlyTallTeam,
One year on a Saturday night during Labor Day weekend they put a women’s doubles match on after the singles match (iirc it was Martina N and I forget who) on Ashe. People were apoplectic. They never tried that stunt again.
I like doubles, too. In fact it’s all I’ve played for the last 25 years. I go to lots of dubs matches at tourneys. But, way more people pay to see singles matches. If doubles were a bigger draw, tourney organizers would put doubles matches on the bigger courts. But they aren’t a bigger draw. Most people wouldn’t know a doubles specialist if they tripped over them.
What a thrilling day yesterday! Love to see Rafa never give in. Yes he got lucky on match point down, but on the other hand, he had an unforced error in the first set tiebreak and “should” have won the first and never would have faced match point down. As is known and we saw, Zverev does not yet have the mental toughness to put failure in the past. But he will…future no. 1 for sure.
Berdych not my favorite but that missed overhead…sheesh, painful to watch. Stan too. Bottom of the draw is anyone’s?
I also really like Zverev emely. However, I fear his gravity defying height will eventually relegate him to the long list chronically injured tennis players who tower over 6’5". He is already 6’6" tall, and being only 18 years old, he could easily hit the 6’7" or even 6’8" mark.
A serve-volley game can be entertaining to watch, but Raonic’s personality doesn’t endear himself to many fans. He approaches everything so robotically and inwardly. He plays like there isn’t an audience, and that’s exactly what he gets in return.
Milos, Milos, Milos… you can’t replace charisma with six tins of Dapper Dan.
