I’d like to point out that despite being told by sally “for the umpteenth time,” that no one wants to ban gun ownership, at least 3 people on this thread alone - emilybee, cartera and artloverplus, have said just that. Are these 3 posters the outlier “crazies” for thinking this way? Or are there others?

In Bermuda there is no income tax, capital gains tax, VAT, sales or use tax or wealth tax. Annual government fees are imposed on businesses and there is a payroll tax. Local businesses must be controlled by Bermudians but offshore operations take place through ‘exempt’ or ‘permit’ companies.

Go for it EmilyBee – Looks like a good opportunity to “give back”!

Those are not my reasons. I simply want to live in a place with a better climate and we cannot move to any of the southern states because we don’t want to live in a red state. I would lose my mind.

California is a blue state with a great climate. We’ve got those dreaded “Wild West” roots though, so maybe it won’t work for you either.

Re: In Bermuda …

… the median cost of a home (including condos) is $1,025,000. That may be out of Sewhappy’s budget!

Yes, I do.

I also think that the tide of public opinion is turning on this issue and we will eventually have much stricter regulations, but there will never be an outright ban (though one can always hope.)

"… we cannot move to any of the southern states because we don’t want to live in a red state."

emilybee - Try Austin or New Orleans.

^ Already in a house in that price range in NJ! Home of the mob and Jersey Shore – my first “blue state” and so classy!

“California is a blue state with a great climate. We’ve got those dreaded “Wild West” roots though, so maybe it won’t work for you either.”

My family is all on the east coast and Bermuda is a quick, easy flight to NYC. Plus, it is beautiful.

Bay, the crazies are the people you were talking about above:

You may not think these people are psycho, but a lot of us do. (Did you watch the videos of the guy in TN threatening to “take the first shot” if the government changes the gun laws? Psycho.) And a lot of them are “hicks.” Which, by the way, is the exact audience of the NRA with its recent proclamations about Newtown. When Wayne LaPierre says “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” you know you are dealing with about a fourth-grade comprehension level. And by the way, I do not think “hicks” are geographically limited to any part of the country. We have them in WI, they have them in NY, they have them in CA.

I also think it hurts your cause that some of the most vocal legislators on gun rights are the same people who have no problem deciding what a woman can do with her body. Many of them also tend to be science-deniers. Again, not helping.

“emilybee - Try Austin or New Orleans.”

Texas and Louisiana are both red states.

We should probably start another thread on this but I wish people didn’t feel this way. For one thing, you never know when a blue state can turn red (like mine–WI). For another, there are good people everywhere. I know I could live in any state and find like-minded friends. I don’t need everybody to like or agree with me. The “red” south, in particular, has a lot to commend it. I have a lot of friends who feel the way you do (many from the east coast–but then, so am I) and it makes me sad that they would make such sweeping generalizations.

You people so terrified of the folks in Tennessee do realize, I hope, that the vast majority of shootings that harm and/or kill people take place in urban settings, very often in extremely “blue” voting precincts, right?

it makes me sad that they would make such sweeping generalizations

Kind of jaw-dropping, actually. The word I’m searching for is . . . bigoted.

APORKALYPSE NOW

By the way, AR-15’s can be used to hunt feral pigs in Texas --night or day–no license/limit and even from helicopters.

Here is some data on urban gun murders to add a little “class” to this discussion.

http://www.theatlanticcities.com/neighborhoods/2013/01/growing-divide-urban-gun-violence/4328/

So that is not true? How do you stop a bad guy with a gun, then?

Bay, because of the “Gun Show Loophole” approximately 40% of gun sales take place without any background check or waiting period. Gun sales on the secondary market do not require those to be done.

^Ok, eastcoast, you are right that regulations are not standardized throughout the country. But again, how do you think the insurance requirement would work?

“I also think that the tide of public opinion is turning on this issue …”

I think Aurora and Tucson and Newtown have gotten the attention of America. And I think all Americans would like to prevent further murderous events. But there is no simple or easy or inexpensive preventive method available. (Yes, I believe assault weapons and high-capacity magazines will be prohibited by Executive order … but that doesn’t address the millions already in public hands.)

Sally, seriously, I don’t want to spend my retirement constantly agitated. It’s bad enough I have to hear/read about new legislation they are passing/trying to pass in these states now.

Is there a higher % of guns purchased at gun shows used in crimes?
