The Thread for College Interviews

Scared to death for my Emory interview on the 20th. Does anyone have experiences with Emory interview? Or just in general, should I bring a resume? I have NO experience with college (or job) interviews and am freaking out right now!!

ABOUT THE U OF CHICAGO INTERVIEW. YOU ASK THEM QUeSTIONS. I REPEAT YOU ASK THEM QUESTION

hey i have a question:

for me, I was wondering what to do in my situation:

I had the most rigorous course schedule possible for my class, yet right before school started, there was a scheduling mishap, and I got switched out to regular classes instead of honors and AP. is there any way to explain this to colleges? and if i am taking the ap exams of the classes that I got switched out of, does it really matter?

Just had a Yale interview and I really expected to be talking MUCH more. I talked about myself for the first 10 minutes or so, and then as a part of my response, I asked a question, which led to the rest of the interview (45 minutes or so) to listening about Yale. Much better than expected

P.S. Brought a resume which interviewer asked for in the end to help write the report. So definitely will be bringing resume in all future interviews, even though I know some advise against it.

Would you recommend bringing a resume and giving it to them if they ask? Or offering it at the very beginning? Or what…

There’ve been a fair number of threads on this issue but no real consensus…

Would it be odd to ask my interviewer before hand whether he’d like me to bring one?

Really? So applicants should come prepared with questions instead of expecting to answer any on their own?

@quomodo I don’t think it would be that odd to ask your interviewer if they would like anything when they call. That way you’re safe both ways.

I brought a resume to almost all of my interview in a manilla folder, and for most of them, it just sat there. One alum actually grabbed the folder and took it home. I feel although you don’t need it, it is always safe to have.

All of my interviewers (all ACs by the way) never asked for one. I believe the purpose of an interview is to get to know you outside of your stats. If they want to know your ECs, they’ll ASK.

COME WITH A LOT OF QUESTIONS FOR U OF CHICAGO. thats how they do their interviews. i asked like 3/4 about the school and 1/2 about the person. its mostly them answering questions

My interviewer for Wellesley has asked me to either bring a resume or email one to her. What do you guys think I should do? Would it be better to email one so that she can get a brief outlook of my EC’s earlier itself so we can focus on other stuff later during the interview or is it better to hand one to her on the day so that we have something to talk about?

The Denver interview was very hard. They asked all sorts of questions about values and integrity and diversity. Be prepared to give lots of examples to support your values. And it’s from a sheet of questions that they ask everyone. Definitely not conversational. Sorry I can;t be more specific because it was my son that was interviewed and I think he was exhausted when he came out! Panel of 3- one from admin, faculty and alumni. I was pretty surprised since the highly selective schools interviews seem so laid back in comparison! Good Luck!

Had an awesome UChicago alumni Interview five hours ago. We ended up spending 50 minutes talking about marxist political theory, and kind of went off topic. She enjoyed discussing about these things though.

For any potential UChicago-ers they may ask you your opinion upon some kind of controversial topic. At least my interviewer asked me about marxism. Simply reply with an overtly weird answer then that should do the trick.

Good Luck!

I am very confused about interviews. I am applying to…
UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Boston College, and Claremont McKenna.

Do any of these schools require interviews? I’m not gonna submit my apps til Christmas, when I will have figured out my SAT score to put on the CommonApp, so I can then submit that.

@Strikeb4ck:

Very few schools actually require interviews, but some really value them (or even just the fact that you request one, even if the interview does not happen). Some schools let you request an interview at any time (go to their website - there should be a form to fill out) while others wait until you have submitted your application (I think Dartmouth does that, for example).

Unless the school has rolling admissions, I see no reason to wait until you have filled out your scores properly. You should just be able to send them an updated score report, which they will add to your file. (Of course, then you would have to pay to send your scores again, so maybe I take that back…)

I know what you mean, but there is a section on the Common App where you list your scores.
Thanks though, I guess I’ll see what I can and can’t get scheduled. Don’t think I’ll bother to do them for Vandy/BC/CMC, though.

Interviewed at Yale – a former Yale and Harvard interviewer made an iPhone app, entoview.com. I used that to get ready, took a practice with my principal, and went up. Interviewed with Mark.

So…say you interviewed at a small, highly selective LAC and it lasted and solid hour and a half. And after you finish, your interviewer tells you that when looking at acceptances to contact him if you are having trouble deciding where to go. How much of a help can a superb on-campus interview help?

Has anyone interviewed with USC yet? If anyone has some potential questions or advice to give me it would be so great! My interview is tomorrow and USC is my top choice.
