The times they are changing

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

When a kid posts in WAMC or College Search and Selection and one offers the above advice, that’s fine, assuming you don’t belabor the point if the kid does not want to listen. In that case, move on to a different thread.

I personally am thrilled that Bob Dylan was recognized for literature although I can understand and respect those who thought that perhaps Philip Roth or Don DeLillo were equally deserving as living American writers of note.

Sooo… where is Bob??

Soooo… where is Bob?

I’ve been around CC a long time but lately have difficulty recognizing what constitutes debate versus discussion. I hope I’ll be permitted to observe that I was fairly floored to read “Oryx and Crake” described as “disgusting, poorly written, cretinous pornography.” Since I identified Margaret Atwood as my favorite author, I want to defend her work and myself for admiring it - not that she needs my defense, and not that anyone else cares what I think. (And not that I intend to change any minds, either.)

I don’t know if I object more to the “cretinous” or the “pornography.”

So a song writer won the Nobel prize in literature. What do you think? I personally would like to see the American Philip Roth win it. He actually writes literature. Does a songwriter write literature?

Maybe the Nobel prize for literature should be renamed. Nobel prize for Arts and Literature?

I grew up with Bob Dylan. I have seen him live several times. He is an icon and a great song writer. But… IDK

Looks like the Nobel committee can’t find Bob either - from CNN, “Nobel Prize has stopped knock, knock, knocking on Bob Dylan’s door”:
